ABSTRACT: In the practice of translating and staging Greek tragedies, we started the
prologue Orestes, by Euripides, in a commercial theater. Our text was not well received.
We were obliged to (re) translate it 'into oral'. The experience came opportunely; It
showed us that there is an imperative instance that cannot be solved in performance; rather
there is an oral syntax that does not depend on the vocabulary or order of words not even
of the parataxis, hypotaxis or any other “taxes” chosen in the text. It is embodied in the
rhythm, fluidity, emotional state proposed by the voice, she establishes the “essence of
affectivity”, the “spatial presence” that communicates. At this point in our research we
assimilated - in practice - Zumthor's postulate: "Oral does not mean popular, just as
written does not mean scholarly." (ZUMTHOR, 1993, p. 119). There is a oral syntax
beyond the syntax, there is an oralization beyond the performance. This proposal
discusses the place of new philology of textual criticism of ancient texts committed to
theatrical oralization.

ABSTRACT: This work is about the presentation of two translation experiences made by
students of the Italian course at the UFMG’S College of Letters, under my supervision,
having as a goal the reflection on the execution methodology, the objectives achieved and
the evaluation of the whole process, from the point of view of Theater translation studies,
discussed and deepened by our GTT (CNPq/UFMG’s Theater Translation Research
Group), teaching and research in the graduate and post-graduate course. The comedies
that were analyzed and translated, Beatrice e Astaroth, from Italian author Stefano Benni,
are, respectively, a Beatrice monologue, Dante’s muse, who, from her time-space, speaks
to a contemporary young audience, and a play that is featured by the devil Astaroth, who,
in the world beyond, has the role of deciding what is the destiny of each soul, after having
talked to them and verified the information on the computer. Beatriz, the translation
conducted in the classroom, was published in this years’ GTT book, Teatro e Tradução
de Teatro vol. II (2019), whereas Astaroth, analyzed and translated by Paula Albernaz in
her Masters completed in February, will be successively presented by a group of students
that are also actors during the “Italian Language week in the World”, in October, and its
production will be held by GTT.

a countryside vocabulary), and the conflict between Agamemnon killer and the character
that does not accept her daughter’s death, questioning the comprehension of victory at the
war.

RESUMO: Este trabalho propõe analisar a tradução para legenda do reality show
RuPaul's Drag Race, programa norte-americano em exibição oficial no Brasil pela
plataforma virtual sob demanda, Netflix.
Graças à exposição de uma cultura periférica na mídia mainstream do contexto
heteronormativo estadunidense, investiga-se de que forma a linguagem queer dos
discursos das participantes drag queens é traduzida nas legendas brasileiras,
especialmente ao se considerar o aspecto dialetal desses falantes inseridos na cena drag
da cultura de partida. A proposta também salienta a provável origem de suas gírias e
expressões nas categorias de variedades dialetais do inglês norte-americano, como o
Southern American English e o chamado AAVE - African-American Vernacular English,

ABSTRACT This paper intends to analyze the subtitling in Brazilian Portuguese of the
reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race, the North-American TV show officially shown in
Brazil through the streaming service Netflix.
Thanks to the exposition of a minority culture in mainstream media in the
heteronormative context of the United States, it investigates in what way the queer
language in the discourses of the drag queen contestants is translated into Brazilian
subtitles, especially considering the dialectical aspect of these speakers placed in the drag
scene of the original culture. This proposal also highlights the probable origin of their
slang and expressions in the categories of dialectical variations in North-American
34
English, as the Southern American English and what is called AAVE - African-American
Vernacular English, drawn together by the position of marginality that they take in the
source language.
Through the content of one episode and one interdisciplinary perspective based on
translation studies (Ovidi Carbonell i Cortés, 1997, and Gillian Lane-Mercier, 1997), in
cultural studies, in sociolinguistics (James Milroy, 2011) and in queer theory (Judith
Butler, 2003), this paper intends to point out how identity and performances act in and
through language, both in the source text as in the target texte, underlining the subversion
of limits and heteronormative dichotomies.
Ultimately, we intend to think about how the use of language and the configuration of
identities are related, inciting categories of power, norms, cultural representations and
orientations socially to the margin. The queer language can thus be appreciated in its
unifying scenario of performative activities and areas of dispute, which creates a place of
ideological circulation, a discourse of these performances and a manner of identity
construction.
ABSTRACT: The study is part of a master’s research and aims to reflect on the
possibility of objectivity in the elaboration of an audio description (AD), considered here
as a modality of audiovisual translation (AVT). AD is defined by Franco and Araújo
(2011, p. 17) as “the translation into words of an object's visual impressions, which can
be a movie, a work of art, a play, a dance performance or an event” (our translation),
therefore, it is understood as an intersemiotic translation (Jakobson, 1959). For the
discussion, we will present some guidelines proposed by AD elaboration manuals, such
as the North American Standards for Audio Description and Code of Professional
Conduct for Describers (2008) and the Brazilian Guia para produções audiovisuais
acessíveis (2016), as well as examples from two ADs to the short film Eu não quero
voltar sozinho, by Daniel Ribeiro. One of them is the one available at the DVD of the
film and written by the company Mil Palavras, and the other is the one we wrote during
the research with the help of a blind consultant. The aim is to highlight moments of greater
distinction between the two ADs, in order to discuss if it is possible to achieve the
objectivity proposed by the manuals. So far, it has been possible to identify some
differences between the two ADs, especially regarding the choice of referents, adjectives
36
and adverbs, which corroborates the assumption of the study that subjectivity is inherent
in translation (ARROJO, 1993, 2007 and FROTA, 1996).

ABSTRACT: This study is based on the current Master's dissertation, which has as its
object of research the Automatic Translation (MT) and uses the methodology and
theoretical assumptions of Translation Historiography to discuss the evolution of
Machine Translation technologies. The aim of the investigation is to analyze the historical
evolution of Machine Translation, in relation to the social and temporal inscription of
technological evolution. The research focuses on the history of AT in the last 40 years,
when the development of Machine Translation systems using Artificial Intelligence
began. From this temporal delimitation, one of the specific objectives is to trace the
historical and social aspects of the moment of technological changes, in order to
understand the motivation of the evolution of technology in AT tools. The concepts of

ABSTRACT: Recent academic studies, developed especially in the United States and the
United Kingdom, have demonstrated that film adaptations are more financially
successful, better received by reviewers and more awarded than films with original plots
(NĚMEC, D. & DVOŘÁKOVÁ, 2017). Such data shows adaptations penetration power,
which makes of them important instruments to influence opinion formation. The use of
intertextuality (STAM, 2006), intersemiotics translation techniques (PLAZA, 2003),
multimodal discourse strategies (KRESS and VAN LEEUWEN, 2006 [1996]) and
nonverbal communication resources (FUNKHOUSER & SHAW, 1990) have a relevant
role there. The force inherited from canonized literary narratives is reinforced by the
persuasive power of audiovisual elements. Brazilian cinema also followed that trend and
creating blockbusters and internationally awarded adaptation of successful books. This
communication brings some examples of how such cinematic adaptations of Brazilian
40
understood by "Spanish culture", especially from the theoretical support of Rafael Jover
(2007), Francisco Aix Gracia (2002) and Gerhard Steingresse (2002).

ABSTRACT: This study deals with the issue of intertextuality between the literary text
Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, written by Mary Shelley (1818), the movie
adapted from the text directed by James Whale (1931) and the Victor Frankenstein movie
directed by Paul McGuigan (2015). We aimed to investigate the techniques used in film
production to compensate the narrative description, examine the congruence and
incongruence in elements between the literary text and the corresponding source movies
adapted, and highlight possible areas of convergence and divergence of meaning between
the original and literary movies adapted from it. We adopted Diniz´s (1998) intersemiotic
translation concepts, Jeha´s (2004) comparison of the major views between books and
movies and Araújo and Guimarães´s (2014) research on the imaginary. In addition, it is
based on Hutcheon´s (2006) literature and movies adaptation theories, in Cahis´s (2006)
adaptation categories and in Wesonga´s (2017) critical transformation discussions. We
used the exploratory and qualitative method data collection of selected literary texts and
44
texts of film by reading the verbal/visual and audiovisual material. One of the final results
of this study highlights how the literary reader can better understand and interact with
alternate meanings that movies recreate of literary texts.
ABSTRACT: This paper intends to present the partial results of an M.A. research project,
currently in progress at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), which aims at
analyzing Spanish director Jess Franco’s film adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's tale “The
Fall of Usher's House”, titled Neurosis - The Fall of the House of Usher (1987), in relation
to Gothic spatiality. Franco adapted the tale three times, and this film presents a very
different version from the original tale, resorting to vampire stories as well. In fact, each
of those versions has additions and withdrawals, as well as beginnings and endings altered
in the plot (according to GUERRA, 2014). Thus, the research aims at analyzing the latest
version adapted by Franco in 1987, and, at the same time, showing how Franco seeks to
transpose the ambiance and the haunted space issue from Poe’s tale, respecting the limits
of cinematographic language. As theoretical framework we refer to the studies from Linda
Hutcheon (2013) and Robert Stam (2006, 2009) regarding adaptation theory, those from
Aparecido Donizete Rossi (2008), Fred Botting (2005) and David Punter (2012) in
relation to the Gothic and those from Gérard Genette (1982) and Julia Kristeva (2005)
vis-à-vis intertextuality. We also resort to critical essays on Poe's works in general and on
the tale and the film here addressed, in particular.
KEYWORDS: Usher; Edgar Allan Poe; Jess Franco; film adaptation; Gothic.

ABSTRACT: The translation of news and reports frequently makes use of peculiar
interventions. One of the main reasons for this is the need to shift and suit the text to a
different cultural community. In this study we aim to describe, categorize, and understand
the motivations behind translation operations within these journalistic genres, using a
parallel corpus of texts compiled from the digital edition of the newspaper EL PAÍS, in
the language pair Spanish-Portuguese in both directions. To achieve our objective, we
make use of the notions of translation strategies and translation techniques. Hurtado
49
Albir (2001) pointed out how different authors have adopted different meanings of the
terms translation strategy and translation technique. Chesterman’s definition of
translation strategy on Memes of Translation (1997) is adopted here as the initial
reference, as well as his distinction between global and local strategies. We then explore
whether his usage of the term translation strategy encompasses the translation operations
called techniques by Hurtado Albir (2001) and technical procedures by Barbosa (1990),
both related to how translators manipulate the linguistic material to reach the skopos
(meaning of the translation). Thus, our approach hopes to shed a light on the recurrent
terminological confusion in the field. In the main part of our study, we analyse the corpus
by using Chesterman's classification of translation strategies, especially the pragmatic
strategies, and we explore the classifications of techniques and technical procedures
proposed, respectively, by Hurtado Albir (2001) and Barbosa (1990). Subsequently, we
test the functionality of such classifications to characterize journalistic translation.
ABSTRACT: Henri Meschonnic has attached concepts that are specific to his theoretical
thinking to terms that have other usual meanings. Behind this nomenclature, which
includes subjectivity, continuous, rhythm, historicity, recitative and enunciation, there is
a project to overcome what he calls the “chain of dualisms” (1988), or the tendency
toward dichotomy in theoretical and scientific thinking, at least in the field of literature
and language, represented by the separation between signifier and signified. Following
Philip Wilson’s (2012) initiative of applying the methodology put forward by Ludwig
Wittgenstein (namely, language gamesand forms of life) in his so-called “second
philosophy” of the Philosophical Investigations to translation studies, we seek to draw an
analogy between the Wittgensteinian leap from analytics to pragmatics and the
Meschonnician leap from sign to discourse, with the aim of investigating the viability of
a synthesis of the two authors’ ideas as a theoretical and methodological proposition for
translation studies. Meschonnic proposes that the sign (enunciate) be overcome in favor
of discourse (enunciation), which he views as a relationship between language and body.
This, we argue that the linguistic experience is akin to a performance and that
Wittgenstein, when focusing on the use of language, also favors this idea, which may be
a possible key for a systematics of translation.

em três casos do corpus - “De leve” (para “Get Back”, Lennon/McCartney); “Sargento
Pimenta e a Solidão (para “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, Lennon/McCartney)
e “Tempo só” (para “Time Will Tell”, Bob Marley)-, tendo em conta as distinções entre
Franzon (2005, 2008, 2015).
ABSTRACT: Which are the boundaries of translation is one of the main ongoing debates
in Translation Studies, as John Milton (2015) pointed out. It is also an almost unavoidable
question when dealing with singable song versions. The book Gilberto Gil: todas as letras
(Rennó 2003) registers eight cases of lyrics in Portuguese devised by the musician and
composer Gilberto Gil (Cintrão 2007, 2009) for songs originally composed in English.
The diversity of procedures used in each of them, when compared to their correspondent
English lyrics, characterizes this corpus as a rich microcosm for descriptions, hypotheses
and insights into singable translations of popular songs. We will describe interlingual and
intercultural operations used in three of these eight song versions — “De leve” (for “Get
Back”, Lennon / McCartney); “Sargento Pimenta e a Solidão” (for “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely
53
Hearts Club Band”, Lennon/McCartney) and “Tempo só” (for “Time Will Tell”, Bob
Marley) —, considering the distinction between translation, adaptation, and “replacement
text” proposed by Peter Low (2005, 2017), as well as the concept of appropriation by
Julie Sanders (2006). Describing “manipulations of sense” (Low 2005: 194) in the
product level —, that is, the different kinds of “inaccuracies” regarding the source lyrics,
ranging from surface meanings of words to the main themes —, will provide a basis for
analysis and explanatory hypotheses in musical and intercultural dimensions, taking into
account proposals by Low(2005), Kaindl (2005), Cintrão (2009) and Franzon (2005,
2008, 2015).

A música
contemporânea explora sonoridades experimentais que geralmente não se ligam a
conteúdos e estilos musicais reconhecíveis, por isso, descrever a obra a partir do seu arco
tensivo - saliências (passagens sensíveis fortes) e passâncias (passagens sensíveis fracas)
- nos ajuda a compreender sua força de tradução intersemiótica.

ABSTRACT How to translate into music the slow, sneaky and intense metamorphosis
of a former jaguar hunter into a jaguar? In Guimarães Rosa's tale “Meu Tio Iauaretê”, the
former hunter receives at his house the unexpected visit of a man whose horse was injured
and, while telling him his adventures, he gradually becomes himself a jaguar. Based on
French semiotics, especially Claude Zilberberg's (2011) tensive approach, we will work
with Mancini's (2019) proposal, according to which what is translated from a work is its
enunciative project. The author proposes parameters for the analysis of the enunciative
project and reveals a tensive arc of the works involved in the translation process
(departure and arrival) based on the sensitive engagement modes of the enunciations. We
will apply the proposal in the musical piece “My Uncle Iauaretê” (2016) for 3 flutes and
vibraphone, by Gustavo Bonin, revealing the sensory links between the tale and the
musical work. Contemporary music explores experimental sonorities that are generally
unrelated to recognizable musical content and styles, so describing the work from its
abstract tensive arc – saliences (strong sensitive passages) and passances (weak sensitive
passages) – helps us to understand its intersemiotic translation force.

ABSTRACT: This study analyses the translation process of the original song Seasons of
Love from the musical theatre play Rent, verifying which strategies the adaptor got rid of
so that the translation could preserve the logocentric and melodic structures when
compared to the original song, noting that the original musical notation cannot be altered.
For this, the text and the original notation of the song, composed by Jonathan Larson in
1994, and its versions to Brazilian Portuguese Tempos de Amor (1994) and Dias de Amor
(2016). On the fundament of the definitions of metric accentuation and rhythm on the
musical theory perspective (BENNETT, 1987; LACERDA, 1967), on the Brazilian
57
Portuguese phonology aspects, especially the rhythm, accentuation and the process of
segmental junction (COLLISCHONN, 2001) and the translation process of music to
song(act of singing (FRANZON, 2008), our study shows that the translation of music to
song tend to be loyal to the melodic aspect, since it is not possible a literal translation
between the idioms that conserves the original music notation without changes at the same
time, making the adaptor create an adaption so that the translated lyric can be followed
with the musical notation of its original lyric and, at the same time, not causing a strange
felling to the listening public.

trying to transfer the meaning of what the character expressed through the use of more

In our communication we will present some translation solutions given to excerpts of the

ABSTRACT: Aristophanes represented his comic plays between the V and IV centuries
B.C. It is known that, during this period, the Greek theater had a very important political
relevance, because there were debates about the issues with which the polis lived: they
questioned about wars, social, political and even literary problems. Today, as a reader,
the receiver of Aristophanic poetry is temporally and culturally away from the discourse
created by the author and needs to have an update access to these texts, as highlights by
Duarte (2015, p.26), “in stating that translations are, nowadays, the main vehicle of
making knowing the classical world and need to fulfill the role of updating such texts for
the new generations.” Thus, this article aims to discuss and illustrate, with theoretical
base in Translation Studies and translated excerpts, ways to update the comedy “Knights”,
making it possible to “reconstruct” the language of the comic text nowadays, because,
according to Chapman (1983, p. 42), “the relationship between fidelity and the need to
transmit a text clearly and immediately is indispensable to represent the characteristics of
the genre in question.”
ABSTRACT: The play Tutta casa, letto e chiesa, by Franca Rame and Dario Fo, is
composed of six monologues for an actress and was written in 1977, when there was a
great polarization between right and left in Italy and when they were still. the
emancipatory struggles that began in 1968 are strong. The thread of monologues is
precisely the condition of women, as well as the struggle for greater equality. All of them,
to a greater or lesser extent, have a comic tone, epic elements, and relationship to the
Italian political context of the 1970s. Translating them into Portuguese was challenging
for several reasons, many of which can be grouped into the dilemma of reconciling
elements. antagonistic: the need for the viewer to have at least a certain familiarity with
the themes treated so that laughter - a fundamental element for the poetics of the play -
can happen, as Bergson (2018) theorizes; and the importance of maintaining, in
translation, references to the political context in which the show was written, since it is
also fundamental to the poetics of the play, even if distant from the spectator. This paper
aims to analyze some of the situations in which this dilemma manifested itself and to
present the translation choices made in each case, justifying them.

ABSTRACT: Any discursive event, that is, any example of discourse is considered
simultaneously text, discursive and social practice (FAIRCLOUGH, 2016 [2001], p. 22).
These events may resignify from one language (semiosis) to another in a multimodal
phenomenon named intermiotic translation. From these premises, this paper aims to
analyze discursive practices in the process of adaptation of the work The fantastic flying
books of Mr. Morris Lessmore (2011) in two multisemiotic genres: the short film and the
illustrated book. The analysis anchored in the Multimodal Transcription Theory
64
(BALDRY; THIBAULT, 2006) in dialogue with the Fairclough’s ADC (2016 [2001]),
theoretical and methodological perspectives, provides a critical-reflexive verification on
these important practices in the semiotic game of translation and adaptation. The short
film, originally a digital application and initially adapted to the cinema, narrate the story
of Morris Lessmore, a young writer who while writing his book, is surprised by a
hurricane that takes him to another setting, a large library, local where much of the plot
develops. Subsequently, the script was adapted to the children’s book and translated to
Portuguese by Vigna (2012). A relevant aspect in this process of translation e adaption,
as conditions of production is the absence of the verbal mode in the short, all semiotic
construction of the narrative was performed visually, gesturally and musically. In
contrast, the illustrated book presents the verbal text along with the visual. Moreover,
either in the production of the short film in the multimodal transcriptive analysis or in the
adaption and reading of the book, the (re)telling of the story in different supports to
different audiences was verified intediscursively, increasing its power in contemporary
times.
a leitura e compreensão deste discurso.

the need for more researches that consider the discursive power manifested in plentiful
multisemiotic modes.

context, considering the tourism-related advertising, it can be inferred that they developed

RESUMO Busca-se nesta pesquisa realizar uma análise intersemiótica entre três
linguagens que versam sobre o Porto de Manaus utilizando como corpus para o estudo o
conto “Manaus Moderna em três tempos” de Neuton Correa (2013), a pintura “Cais do
porto de Manaus” de Moacir Andrade (1990) e uma fotografia sem título do álbum “Por
amor a cidade” do fotógrafo Otoni Mesquita (2013).
Outro elemento
que converge aproximação de análise é a categoria analítica do valor da informação em
Dado (os barcos, as mercadorias) e o Novo (o porto, a escadaria).
Percebe-se que as informações obtidas por meio das análises das imagens possuem
ligação com o texto escrito ao estabeleceram uma coesa e coerente ligação.
In this analytical category we seek to understand what is the value of information (Given-
New / Real-Ideal / Center-Margin), texture issues (Size / Perspective / Contrast / Color),
and frame (Connection-Disconnect). As a support we are also based on Soares and Santos
(2017), Batista Jr et aliae (2018), Oliveira and Carvalho (2013) and Heller (2013).
We could see that in the images we have as Ideal the sky opposing the real structure to
the Manaus’s port, in the center we have the boats - thus demonstrating their importance
in the visual narrative and in the margins the physical and architectural structure of the
place. Another element that converges analysis approach is the analytical category of the
information value in Dado (the boats, the goods) and the New (the port, the staircase).
Conclusion: It can be seen that the information obtained through the image analysis is
linked to the written text by establishing a cohesive and coherent link.
“Community” (in green) and also the fruits (in red). It is possible to infer from the image
the visual metaphor of the tree (SOARES, 2013) understanding that, through the leaves,
the figure illustrates a unity and at the same time a plurality. Thus, it can be read that, just
as the leaves are different, but together they form one single tree, this respective church
is made of different people who think differently (sizes and shades) and do different
things (fruits), they are united in the same faith (the truck and the root). Through the color
combinations, it is understood that the Community is full of people and this collectivity
is anchored on values suggested for the slogan.

ABSTRACT: The installation “A Beleza Sombria dos Monstros”, which took place
between May and August 2019 at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (Brasilia) - curated
by Jenny He and Holly Keller - proposed the adaptation of Tim Burton's films in
recreations of imaging machines - inspired on the pre-cinema era - and automated with
small engines driven by Arduino microcontrollers. In the installation, the protagonist of
“Edward Scissorshands” (1990) became a shadow theater automaton; Jack Skelington,
from "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993) and Sparky, from "Frankweenie" (2012)
became flipbook triptych characters; Penguin, Batman and Catwoman, from "Batman"

images from “Vincent” (1982), Burton's first audiovisual work, was transformed into
anamorphosis of a magic mirror and a praxinoscope has incorporated illustrations from
the strange barber of “Sweeney Todd” (2008). This paper aims to discuss the dialogue
between fine arts and cinema, having as its object of analysis the exhibition with
adaptations of the works of Tim Burton, scrutinized by theories of Adaptation Studies -

ABSTRACT: The Brazilian play “Perfume de Mulher” by Silvio Guindane, Pedro Brício
and Walter Lima Jr - based on Giovanni Arpino's novel “Il Buio e il Miele” (1969), on
the films “Profumo di Donna” by Dino Risi (1974) and Martin Brest's "Scent of Woman"
(1992) - is the first theatrical adaptation in the world. The plot, which brings together
elements of the Italian and American novel and movies with additions from Brazilian
adapters, tells the story of a retired military man Fausto (Silvio Guindane) who, after
became blind, is determined to kill himself. However, he decides to travel accompanied
by a caretaker called Ciccio (Eduardo Melo). During the trip, his great love of the past,
Sara (Gabriela Duarte), along with the young caretaker, make him rethink his decision.
This paper aims to discuss the dialogue between literature, cinema and theater, having as
its object of analysis the novel “Il Buio e il Miele” and the homonymous films and play
“Perfume de Mulher”, in the light of some theories of Adaptation Studies - such as those
of Linda Hutcheon (2013), Julie Sanders (2006) and other scholars, thus seeking to
highlight the specific features of each media and the point of view of their respective
authors through the resources used by the literary, cinematographic and theatrical
discourses.

ABSTRACT: Visual and imagetic arts are often inspired by reality and memory for their
artistic results, a feature that can bring an audience closer, better reveal and recreate it
through the arts, and also represent it with their daily lives and idiosyncrasies from this
same perspective. Given this peculiarity, this brief work intends to look at ROMA, the
latest work of Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, and how a work of art takes place, in
translation terms, from the memories of the creative artist, people and reality with who
lived and journalistic news linked to the theme presented and discussed in the film. As
well as pointing examples of processes of translation and recreation of this work, made
by other means, in the vision, interpretation and reading of other artists and unfolded in
other arts (musical, visual, gestural and body). In addition to contextualizing the
intermediate developments and influences that a work of art such as this based on
memory, the real and the image can achieve.
ABSTRACT: This work intends to discuss the questions in the comics and its
implications to the translation. Therefore, we will analyse the french graphic novel “Le
photographe”, published between 2003 and 2006 and translated in Brazil as “O
fotógrafo”, between 2006 and 2010. The work. The work uses the comic languages, as
drawings and photografies to narrate the events occurred during the war between USSR
and Afghanistan in the 1980’s, setting what was convinced to call as journalism in the
comics (RAMOS, P; CHINEN; N (orgs.). Framing the real: essays about comics
(auto)biographics and journalistics, 2016). It is interesting to us, then, to verify how the
journalistic narrative sets up (or translates) in comic language to, then, analyze the
conjugation between the image and text, this is, how the Reading manner of this language
and its manner of enunciate and transmit the message embosses the comics translation
specificity. What is referred to the notion of enunciation in the comics, Beatens, 2001

ABSTRACT: The growing interest in graphic narratives in recent years has generated,
in both the publishing and film markets, an intense creation of adaptations of these stories.
The purpose of this project was to analyze the extent to which these adaptations add
values to the original text, while analyzing the down points resulting from this process,
in a continuum of mutual transformation. For this, we used the graphic novel Civil War
(2006) written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Steve McNiven, published by Marvel
Comics, and its film adaptation Captain America: Civil War, released in 2016 and
directed by the brothers Anthony and Joe Russo. Thus, it was intended to investigate
what, in fact, adaptations adapt or should adapt, considering not only the various
differences between literary and filmic means, but also the differences between

innumerable adaptations of the same literary text (LEITCH, 2003) and, in the process, try
to demystify the idea of fidelity that, although desired by the most orthodox readers of
the original narrative, must be understood as unreachable due to the multiple
interpretations to which the original narrative is subjected when worked for an adaptation
and the most various types of media through which it can be served. Thus, the objectives
of this research were to analyze the adapted work as an individual and autonomous work,
at the same time as it was analyzed as a whole, to understand what were the mechanisms
used to maintain the original plot in all the media that conveyed it.

translation and poetry are areas of literature that are difficult to delimit, as they encompass
various categories of linguistics and sociolinguistics” (ANGORAN, 1996) and that in
passing from one language to another we are always condemned “to say almost the same
thing” (OUSTINOFF, 2003), in this work, we adopt a procedure that focuses more on
questions of syntax, poetic figures to reproduce the message of poems than on their
structural aspects (rhythms, assonances).

transcriação (CAMPOS, 1972) dessa obra transgredindo a tradução apenas do conteúdo
deixando que a recriação proposta abale a língua francesa como a obra original abalou
(BENJAMIN, 2008) língua brasileira. Este trabalho coopera no âmbito da reafirmação da
tradução literária como arte e da visibilidade do tradutor enquanto autor-recriador.

ABSTRACT: In this article, I discuss a reflection on the poetic translation of the fairy
tale The Secret of Friendship (COSTA, 2000) into a French language. Three translation
models were adopted, among which it can be found the acrostic translation that requests
a translation of a work applied to a acrostic, a poetic translation that treats the poetic text
as a semiotic compound and a construct of fragments that organize themselves and each
other, and the luciferin translation that aims transgressing the translation of essential
content. Through the production of 9 versions of translation versions, and by making with
problematic words and expressions in the translation act, was possible to identify that the
works poetic organization lies in the symbology of the number seven that reflect itself in
the acrostic that organize the tale. Therefore, it was found that the possibility of the
transcreation (CAMPOS, 1972) of this work transgressing the translation of the content
only, letting the proposed recreation shake the french language like the original work
shaked (BENJAMIN, 2008) the brazilian portuguese language. This article concur in the
literary translation reafirmation scope as art and the visibility of the translator as author-
recreator.

trabalho basear-se-á em Text Analysis in Translation: Theory, Metholodogy, and Didactic
Application of a Model for Translation-Oriented Text Analysis.

ABSTRACT: Aspects of the narrative and language used by Guimarães Rosa are still a
challenge for the translation of his work. The short story “Meu tio o Iauaretê”, published
posthumously in 1969, presents some specific particularities of the author's style, such as
the hybridism between Portuguese and Tupi, and a level of experimentation with the
language sometimes compared to that of Grande Sertão: Veredas (BYLAARDT, 2008).
Based on the character-narrator approach as a translator-of-themselves who builds his
worldview in first person in the narrative, we rely on Klinger's (2015) discussion of
linguistic hybridity and translation and on the strategies of translation as mimesis defined
by Sternberg (1981) to analyze how this use of language in the source text and its
relationship with the narrative manifest (or not) in the translations of the story. The focus
will be on the English translations “My Uncle, the Jaguar” (1997), by Giovanni Pontiero,
and “The Jaguar” (2001), by David Treece.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to develop a reflection on erotic translation from
the results obtained in the Completion Work of the University of Brasilia which was
performed a comparative analysis between the erotic vocabulary used in the Portuguese
edition of the book House of the Fortunate Buddhas (1999), by João Ubaldo Ribeiro, and
its translation into peninsular Spanish by Beatriz de Moura as La Casa de los Budas
Dichosos (2000).). The main objective of this work was to identify deformations of
qualitative and quantitative impoverishment, according to the system of deforming
tendencies presented by Antoine Berman (2012). Published by the publisher Objective,
the book House of the Fortunate Buddhas was commissioned by João Ubaldo Ribeiro to
compose, in the Full Sin Collection, the sin of lust. The narrative is composed of terms of
vocabulary considered vulgar which, throughout the work, identified as one of the
primordial elements for the construction of a critique against the repression of female
sexuality, considered as the essence of the work, according to the concept of Walter
Benjamin.Through the above comparative analysis, it was found that the essence of the
work in Portuguese was not translated into Spanish due to translation choices that
softened the erotic terms and expressions present in the original edition of the book,
resulting in the decharacterization of the work.

ABSTRACT: Blank Verse (NikNok Media, 2013) is a webseries that re-signifies William
Shakespeare and other historical figures of the Elizabethan period reimagined as students
and university teachers today. A multimedia narrative, through YouTube videos and
social media posts, follows the characters on their journey as beginning writers, in a
highly technology-mediated context. Mostly novelists, these young authors dream of
seeing their works adapted in Hollywood, but they find themselves immersed in doubts
and questions about the artistic quality of these adaptations. In a highly metalinguistic
way Blank Verse derides or talks traditionally about how adaptations, critique, through
his characters, precisely the kind of transformations and displacements constructed by the
web itself. Drawing on multimedia resources, a web also explores the nature of literary
creation processes by bringing to a canvas such as erasures, recordings and collaborations
between writers. Thus, Blank Verse shows a production that is extremely conscious of its
own status of adaptation (or serious translation?) And creatively works this awareness.
To discuss these issues, this communication will be theoretically supported by the thought
of Marie-Laurie Ryan, Luís M. S. Martinho and Henry Jenkins, who do not have
multimedia narratives, besides the already classic Julio Plaza, based on the angle of
intersemiotic translation.

1993. Desde sua criação, o grupo potiguar objetiva desmitificar e popularizar as obras do
bardo inglês, com suas técnicas circenses e inserção de elementos da cultura popular
nordestina na composição do espetáculo. Em uma de suas produções, Sua Incelença,
Ricardo III, de 2010, com direção de Gabriel Villela e adaptação dramatúrgica de
Fernando Yamamoto, é possível compreender a riqueza das reinterpretações ou
reescrituras shakespearianas. Visto a relevância dessas reescrituras no contexto brasileiro
de produção e recepção, o presente trabalho possui o objetivo de trabalhar com conceitos
que envolvem o processo de adaptação de um texto teatral para o palco, utilizando
principalmente as considerações de Hutcheon (2013) e, mais especificamente, de Plaza
(2013) quando trata da Tradução Intersemiótica, conceito esse que guiará as
possibilidades de análise aqui propostas.

ABSTRACT: The use of artworks with great social burden into new productions many
times turns difficult the work of translators, adapters, directors, producers and of all those
involved in the process of working with a classical text as source. Such difficulty,
however, does not annul the quality of different productions that involve William
Shakespeare, on his more than 400 years of post-existence. On the contrary, the
permanent work with Shakespearean plays composes the survival panorama
(BENJAMIN, 2011) of his plays. Such attribute may be observed, for instance, in many
works of popular theatre groups made in Brazilian territory, just as happens with the
productions of the northeastern group Clowns de Shakespeare, founded in 1993. Since its
creation, the potiguar group aims to demystify and popularize the plays of the English
bard. This objective is achieved with circus techniques and the inclusion of elements
99
referring to the northeastern popular culture in the spectacle formulation. In one of the
group productions, Sua Incelença, Ricardo III, of 2010, with Gabriel Villela as director
and Fernando Yamamoto as dramaturgical adapter, is possible to observe and
comprehend the diversity of Shakespearean reinterpretations. Noticing the relevance of
these remakes in Brazilian context of production and reception, this work focus on
working the concepts about the adaptation process when dealing with a play staged. For
this, we will use, mainly, considerations about the subject brought by Hutcheon (2013)
and, more specifically, of Plaza (2013) when he discusses about Intersemiotic
Translation, definition that will guide the possibilities of analysis here proposed.

ABSTRACT: This paper tackles the adaptation of the classic Robinson Crusoe (1719)
by Daniel Defoe to the graphic novel format on the three volumes composing the French
series Robinson Crusoé, published between March 2007 and April 2008 by publisher
Delcourt (“Ex-Libris” collection), with script, designs and color by Christophe Gaultier,
along with its Brazilian edition, Robinson Crusoé, released in one volume through
publishing company Salamandra (19th print, 2009) with translation by Luciano Vieira
Machado. Although there is no intent to neglect the verbal aspects (to be examined in
relation to the artist’s main options to condense the text to the comics), the participation
of image in the significance construction will be prioritized, i.e., the way how the artist
makes use of visual composition (be it the characters’) to the transpositions from one
101
medium to another, making image its main narrative instrument — as, indeed, happens
in this work. The paper proposes, thusly, an exploration of the potential of image as
narrative in the French adaptation, with the Portuguese version being the facilitator of the
story unit, and, thus, of what is intended to demonstrate. The theories this work is
grounded in combine propositions of image (Words About Pictures [1988], by Perry
Nodelman, is an example) and specifically of the graphic narratives, like The Graphic
Novel (2015), by Jan Baetens and Hugo Frey.
ABSTRACT : There is much more between writing and reading than our eyes can see.
The path taken by the Text-of-the-Author to its manifestation in Book-Read-By-The-
Reader holds, at least, an entire editorial process that may be more or less authorial,
visible and meaningful. The elements we can retrieve from this process are called
paratext, according to Genette, “that by which a text becomes a book and offers itself as
such to its readers and, more generally, to the public” (2009, p. 9). Assuming that the
translator is, at first, part of the audience of a source text (the translator as a reader), and
this source text influences and is influenced by all the paratextual elements surrounding
it, we will investigate their role in translation. Genette divides the paratext into peritext,
material and spatial elements that appear around the text; and epitext, everything external
to the book, from reception to public and private circulation. In this presentation, through
case analysis, our attention will focus especially on the peritextual factors and the way
they make up a certain editorial enunciation (Souchier concept, 1998), and how much,
when and how it can be explored in translation, especially literary (conceived under the
principle of recreating a global enunciative project).

RESUMO: A tradução coletiva é apontada por Haroldo de Campos (2010) como um dos
caminhos possíveis para textos possuidores de alta complexidade e que, em princípio,
seriam intraduzíveis. O trabalho de cooperação, através de uma equipe orientada para um
alvo comum seria, segundo este autor, uma possibilidade de abordagem que poderia
fomentar traduções criativas, voltadas para a manutenção do signo estético em detrimento
de uma fidelidade ao significado textual. A partir destes postulados, a presente
comunicação se propõe a socializar a experiência de tradução coletiva do "Entremés de
la ropavejera" (1670), de Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas (1580-1645), realizada pelo
Núcleo Quevedo de Estudos Literários e Traduções do Século de Ouro da UFSC,
enfatizando reflexões e escolhas envolvidas nesse processo. A história do entremez gira
nacional.

translate this play by Marlowe into regular Alexandrians? Would a theatrical form that
takes up literary resources used in narrative poems, without yet maturely developing
theatrical potentialities, justify a more conservative translation project?
ABSTRACT: The present study intends from the interpretation problems presented by
Umberto Eco (in The Limits of Interpretation (2004), talk about the concepts of
Translation, Interpreting, Decipher, Subjectivity, Creativity, Freedom and Adaptation,
from different versions of William Shakespeare's play Titus Andrônicus (1584). Beyond
the literary, dramaturgical and cinematographic processes that check multiplicity of
meanings to the piece. Importantly, this work raises as its central focus the choice of
linguistic meanings in the semantic and cultural constructions and variations of texts and
words in Shakespeare’s work: the proposed clipping involves the words Stuprum and
Rape, in Shakespeare's original, in some versions translated as abuse (in portuguese:
estupro), another like kidnapping (in portuguese: rapto), and another even as 'loss of
virginity' (in portuguese: perda da virgindade), creating varied discretions in the acting of
the characters-actors as well as in the psycho-socio-political context of the piece).

ABSTRACT: Oftentimes, the space given to translation in the Language and Literature
undergraduate courses is not yet significant. This is also due to the little information that
professors of this area have about translation and its close (albeit limiting) relationship
with the widely criticized Grammar and Translation Method. In the opposite direction to
113
the automation of the translation process, and with the purpose of promoting a broader
learning environment in which both linguistic and cultural aspects are discussed, this
paper presents an experience of pedagogical translation applied to undergraduate students
of the Spanish Language and Literature degree at the Federal University of Santa
Catarina. The experiment was carried out in the course of Translation Studies I, offered
in the third semester. This experience is anchored in a functionalist perspective (NORD,
2016), i.e., translation practice is understood as a dynamic process, in which the
student/translator must take into account several elements such as: the target-text
addressee, genre specificities, source and target text linguistic and cultural knowledge,
the sender’s intention, etc. The source text chosen for the translation activity was an
advertising of a worldwide well-known restaurant chain. The activity took place through
several stages, namely: reading and discussion of theoretical texts, construction of a
translation project, the translation process, and translation sharing/socialization. At the
end of the practice, the students/translators were able to do functionalist translations,
consistent with the idealized translation project as well as the linguistic and cultural
aspects of the intended addressee, which justifies the adjustments made in the translation
process.
ABSTRACT: The research project named Translation training: the translation process in
focus (Formação de tradutores: o processo tradutório em foco) is an initiative which
takes place at Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul, Chapecó campus, taking into
consideration the low visibility on Translation Studies in Letters curriculum of course
academics - Portuguese and Spanish languages in that institution. The basis of a
functionalist and cognitivist perspective this project stands within Approaches to
Translation Process that doesn’t understand the translation as a mechanical exercise, but
as a process that requires cognitive effort by those who translate, taking greater
importance to this aspect than to the final product. The functionalist perspective of
115
translation (NORD, 1998, 2010a, 2010b, 2016) shall mean that cultural aspects are part
of translation process since, many times, the “initiator” and the “addressed” find
themselves at opposite poles and their cultural distance turns into translation challenges
which requires whoever translates the creation of strategies to supply the lexical and
synthetic level of the language. The experience report up to the present state of the
research relies on reflections on the translation process of different kinds of text, besides
the difficulties of this practice on these language pairs (Portuguese<>Spanish), being
given through simulations of different goals and target audiences which is designed these
translations, as in advertising, literary tales, news, recipes and manuals. It’s possible to
increase the student's concepts about translation, through theory and practice, as well as
the importance of retranslate and the challenges and features involved on this work.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this work is to present the process of compiling a study
corpus for the analysis of the discourse of photovoltaic solar energy (hereinafter PVE),
as well as the considerations made during this process. PVE, harnessing the solar rays for
electricity generation, is currently one of the fastest-growing energy sources in the world.
This growth is reflected in the translation market by the demand for translation of
technical and scientific texts, which carry the speech of the specialists in the field of PVE.
It is within this context that our doctoral research is inserted. Its purpose is to investigate
and understand the cultural influences present in the organization of specialized discourse
by Brazilian and French authors based on Contrastive Rhetoric (KAPLAN, 1966,
CONNOR, 1999) and Contrastive Analysis (LADO, 1974). To do so, we will analyze,
through the tools provided by Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004, VIANA,

works. The literary novel contextualizes and develops social interactions, exploring all
scapegoating persecutory stereotypes. While translation renounces some stereotypes to
the detriment of another perspective of narrative focus, working them from the
specificities of cinematic language and avoiding the conception of Sacred, present in Élis’
work. Since intersemiotic translation consists of the creative transit of languages,
establishing its own truth, Berardo’s optics has divergences from the literary novel, but
her adaptation sustained by itself, exploring, thus, new constructions from the visual
elements of this media.

funções distribucionais (cardeais e catalisadoras) e integracionais (índice e informação)
dos textos analisados, bem como, observar as semelhanças entre os trechos escolhidos
pelos autores para serem adaptados do romance para os roteiros. O referencial teórico tem

ABSTRACT: This paper presents some of the results of the doctoral thesis defended by
the author in 2018 at the Federal University of Santa Maria (RS). It brings a comparative
analysis between the 1985 novel O Quatrilho, written by José Clemente Pozenato, and
the two movie scripts adapted from this novel, one by Antonio Calmon and the other by
Leopoldo Serran. The research presents an analysis protocol developed by the author to
enable the comparative analysis of the mentioned novel and the cinematographic scripts.
Through this protocol, we seek to identify distributional (cardinal and catalyst) and
integrational (index and informational) functions of the analyzed texts, as well as to
observe the similarities between the excerpts chosen by the authors to be adapted from
the novel to the scripts. The theoretical framework is based on intersemiotic translation
and authors such as Barthes (2008), Calmon (2016), Lima (2007), Pozenato (1996, 2014),

ABSTRACT: The different subjects are positioned in the same plane of the discourse in
a relation of reciprocity under different points of view, thus providing the representation
of the discourse of others through the dialogic forms. In this sense, the word of others is
not a relation of equivalence, because it is conceived for a third party: the recipient, which
we here classify as the subject translator. Thus, for this work, our main objective is to
anticipate, by juxtaposing the concept of the word of others with the discourse of specialty
within a tenuous logic, the linguistic differences presented in a health specialty document,
produced regularly in English amongst translators of different nationalities, cultures and
languages, and who are allocated in different units of the company where the document
is originally produced. The specific objective of this paper is to investigate a possible
interference of translation process of specialized document production, affecting the
author and the translator relations. For this, the present corpus study focuses on fifteen
written document from the pharmaceutical sector. The set of documents studied comprise
two copies of England and USA, thirteen copies of European cities, of America and Asia,
for example: Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Turkey, among others. It is therefore
established that there is a clash of voices and ideas, causing the latent word to be
pronounced in such a way that the distant subjects approach, analogous to what Bakhtin
says, in the same way as the figures on the playing cards, “contraries meet, they look at
each other, they reflect on each other, they know and understand one another”.

ABSTRACT: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory first published in 1964 is a popular
children’s novel by Roald Dahl. The story features the adventures of Charlie, an
unfortunate young boy who finds himself in Willy Wonka’s unique chocolate factory.
Despite its target audience, the narrative shows some disturbing characteristics. In the
Brazilian published version (1989), translated by Dulce. H. Vainer, the traits of violence
found in the songs were softened. This study aims to propose a new translation of
Augustus Gloop’s song, which can be considered one of the most violent and somber
songs in the book. We based our translation in Laranjeira’s (1993) ideas, that the
translation of a poem should not be limited to the preservation of its general idea and
form, but also textual markers of poetic significance. The translation process and its
challenges allowed a new version of the song, whose process also allowed a reflection on
the art of translation and the numerous choices that the translator needs to make during
the profession. It was necessary to make a few changes in the rhyme scheme of the
original song, but we were able to maintain the rhymes, as well as the semanticity, shape
and, most importantly, the violent characteristics of the original text, something we
believe to be fundamental for achieving the translation of its poetic identity.
the american version presents the Amazon with vibrant colors in the foreground,
highlighting a utopian vegetation and it alludes to the fantastic. On the other hand, it is
noticed in the interpersonal dimension that the cover of the source text, a photograph of
a room with a view of a river, possibly would not have the same impact on the foreign
reader, since it distances itself from regionalism, the creative frame and, it approaches to
the central problematic, the solitude and the familiar drama. Therefore, the analysis shows
that the relations between the writer and the reader are different according to the regional
and mythological aspects shown in the translations, and the marketing issues resulting
from both of the contexts of situation. It is necessary to think critically-reflexively about
how these texts indicate the position and the intention of the (re)writer and project the
book's first impression, which does not always convey the original idea of the source text.
tações distintas do material adaptado.
siderar as especificidades da linguagem fílmica (EDGAR-HUNT, MARLAND E
RAWLE. 2010; BARNWELL, 2008).
ABSTRACT: The film Ready Player One (2018), adapted from the namesake book
written by Ernest Cline (2011), presents a dystopian society centered in a virtual reality
called OASIS. In this reality, people identify themselves with avatars in numerous games
(similar to MMORPG) being the central game Halliday’s Easter Egg Hunt, in which the
winner, having completed a series of quests, will hold the rights and fortune produced by
OASIS. The presentation seeks to expose the initial analysis of a Scientific Initiation
Project that has its direction the study of the adaptation process concerning the game-
narrative from book to movie (AARSETH, 2005, 1997; ROUSE, 2005; SKOLNICK,
2014). In accordance with Stam (2000), adapting can be seen as a creative process that
involves the story’s reinterpretation, making it possible to create limitless significant
combinations based on diverse interpretations of the source material. In accordance with
Stam, Hutcheon (2006) points out that viewing adaptation as such is to acknowledge it as
another production, reimagined by another author/adapter. In the movie adaptation, it is
129
possible to infer that the co-authors, Zak Penn and Ernest Cline, tried to conform the story
into its sociohistorical context, especially when putting accordantly to the specifics of
cinema as a medium, making the necessary alterations in the quests carried out by the
characters. Thus, in addition to analyze the translation process as a rewriting act, it will
also be discussed the fallacy of the demand for fidelity (HATTNHER, 2013; LEITCH,
2007), as well as the importance in considering the particularities of film’s language
(EDGAR-HUNT, MARLAND E RAWLE. 2010; BARNWELL, 2008).

as retraduções permitem a sobrevida (fortleben) do texto.
PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Tradução Indireta; Literatura Indiana; Retradução; Cultura.

translated. This research also resulted on the understanding of how the translator of the
text which will intermediate Indirect Translation interferes on the translation process, and
how retranslations allow the text afterlife (fortleben).
Susana Lages,
language, based on the theoric concepts presented by Francis Henrik Aubert in his work
(In)Fidelidades da Tradução: Servidão e autonomia do tradutor, Linda Hutcheon in
Teoria da Adptação, Marilia Mello Pisani in A Linguagem Cinematográfica de Planos e
Movimentos, among others. Questions such as “Was the adaptation loyal and/or was it
able to communicate the essence of the original work?”, “Which elements were omitted,
added or transformed?”, “Were there any improvements and/or limitations in the
intersemiotic translation?”, guided our study and research. We presented, analyzed and
made some considerations about the comparative and reflexive analysis of the
intersemiotic translation of excerpts from the novel and of scenes from the first two
episodes of the first season of the television series American Gods.
destes trabalhos, 2) a área a qual estavam vinculados e 3) o referencial teórico tradutório
ABSTRACT: The project’s objective was to investigate the state of the art in studies on
João Guimarães Rosa’s translated work. This research is described as documentary and
historical-bibliographical. The study material consists of master's dissertations and
doctoral theses produced based off the work: Metodologias de pesquisa em Estudos da
Tradução: uma análise bibliométrica de teses e dissertações produzidas no Brasil entre
2006-2010 (2016) in Brazil . The focus of the study were theses and dissertations since
the production of articles, congress proceedings, and book chapters derived from thesis
productions. This research consists basically of two phases: 1) Survey and gathering of
study material; 2) Analysis of the collected material, which was divided into three
categories: 1) the university and years of production of these productions; 2) the area to
which they were linked; and 3) the theoretical translation framework that was used in the
production. 449 papers were analyzed by us, focusing our attention on studies that
136
discussed the translation problem, and thus 11 master’s dissertations and five doctoral
theses were selected. The defenses occurred predominantly at the University of São
Paulo, Universidade Estadual Paulista, and the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais,
mostly from the year 2000, showing that this area is characterized as emerging in the field
of Linguistics and not yet institutionalized in funding agencies.
ABSTRACT: This research aims to translate five key excerpts of the work Midsummer
Night and Other Tales in Verse (1928) written by English author John Masefield,
approaching Arthurian legends. Among twenty-two episodes, in the eighth one is intituled
the whole part of the work and a contemporary narrator entries the enchanted medieval
world during midsummer night. As well as divulgating among Brazilian readership this
innovative book, its translation may help future studies. Despite some authors’
importance such as Masefield’s, when using a different method from Tennyson’s Idylls
of the King, there is not much bibliography on him, especially in Brazil. According to
Gossedge, “the author intends to establish bonds with Feudalism, avoiding bourgeois
issues of his time. Thereby, in Translation Studies’ field, the present research has become
the first translation of Masefield’s book”(GOSSEDGE, 2007, p. 202). The translation has
chosen to adapt the narrative poetry into prose, in order to preserve its main meaning. As
long as there are syllabic differences between English and Portuguese, Masefield can
easily insert more information using less words from his mother tongue than any Brazilian

ABSTRACT: The women who were part of the Nordic society, during the tenth century,
used to be at times, pictured as warriors that fought mainly in the defensive part in battles,
besides some other liberties such choose their husbands and even take their places when
they were not available, as we are able to see in the Nordic literature. These, and other,
characteristics are part of the aim to analyze if there is and how is constructed the influ-
ence of the Nordic woman in Éowyn, the character from Lord of the Rings, published in
England, between 1954-1955, written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Posteriorly, the objective was to
observe the way Peter Jackson represented Éowyn’s characteristics to the cinemato-
graphic adaptation, Lord of the Rings (2002-2003), based on Linda Hutcheon’s (2006)
theory. Concerning the literary analysis, Kate Millet’s (1970) theory was used to support
this study. After the analysis, the conclusion was that Éowyn challenges the stereotype of
feminine characters from that time, since she desires to be something that society does
not expect her to be, and she faces everything to achieve it. Éowyn is so noteworthy in
the narrative that it resulted in her being adapted to Peter Jackson’s movie without mean-
ingful changes. Finally, this article provides visibility to a feminine character that differs
because of the attitudes of resistance and contributes to the creations of feminine charac-
ters that breaks the stereotype of woman’s representation.
