Replacing T pieces & Ball valves with Diverters

Dead space area The clean alternative

o Diverter valves seal at the take‐off point, eliminating
dead space

o Continuous back flushing is not required.

o Design more compact

T‐piece o Very advantageous, especially when 3 or more parallel

outlets are required.
Standby Valve Ball Valve 2
Closed Open

The old solution

o Normally T pieces and ball or plug valves are used to isolate the
standby valve, resulting in dead space from the takeoff point
o If the liquid is a solid containing slurry, the solids can settle in
the ball valve and in the pipe.
o One solution is the use back flushing, i.e. to continuously flush
the dead lag back into the main line. However this adds cost
and can considerably reduce plant throughput.

Pump Switching Diverter Valves

2‐6 Way Feed Pump Diverter Valve

o In many plants several pumps are used in parallel. Of these one is always in standby allowing for repair or
maintenance without affecting plant performance.

o Normally T pieces and ball or plug valves are used to isolate the standby valve, resulting in dead space from the
takeoff point to the isolation valve. Diverter valves eliminate this dead space

o Flushing / Cleaning / Draining valves can be included in the body of the diverter to optimise cleaning
