Let us consider the open interval ]0, T [, T > 0, of the real line R and a real Banach
space X. Represent by Lp(0, T ; X), 1 p +, the vector space of the applications
u : ]0, T [ X such that, for each s [0, T [, the vector u(s) X is strongly measurable on
]0, T [ and the norm ||u(s)||X belongs to Lp(0, T ). In Lp(0, T ; X) we define the norm:
ZT
||u||pLp (0,T;X) = ||u(x)||pX ds

with the integral calculated in X. The mapping u , above defined, is linear and continuous
on D(0, T ). Therefore, u is a distribution on ]0, T [, called vector distribution on ]0, T [,
defined by u of Lp(0, T ; X), with value in X. Then u is a continuous linear mapping from
D(0, T ), on X, that is u L(D(0, T ), X), space of continuous linear transformations from
D(0, T ) into X. In general the space L(D(0, T ), X) is called the space of vector distributions
on ]0, T [ with value in X. In particular u is one of those distributions, precisely, that one

defined by u Lp(0, T ; X). The space of all distributions defined on ]0, T [ with value in
X is represented by D (0, T ; X). Therefore, the distribution u is an object of D (0, T ; X).
Proof: In fact, let u the function defined on R such that u = u on [0, T ] and u = 0
on the complement. For > 0 letZus consider ()> 0 the regularizing family of even
functions 0, with D(R), (s) ds = 1. Then defined by

for all D(0, T ). For this integral to be zero, it is necessary that u be zero in
[, T ], > 0, containing the support of . When 0 we know that u u in
L1(, +; X). Then, u = 0 in [, T ], > 0 arbitrary. Then u = 0 on [0, T ].
In general, we have

Note that the Lemma 2 says that if u L1(0, T ; X) has distributional derivative zero,
then u is constant.
Before proving Lemma 2, observe that a necessary and sufficient condition for
0 D(0, T ) be derivative of 1 D(0, T ) is that

we obtain 1 D(0, T ).

If we write c = hu, i, we obtain
that is,
u = c in the sense of distributions on [0, t].
Remark 1. If (i) or (ii) is true, the function u is, in particular, a continuous function
from [0, T ] on X, that is, u C0([0, T ]; X).

The first integral on the right hand side is zero, because is constant and (0) =

hv (t), i = 0 for all D(0, T ).

Note that (1.12), (1.13) imply (ii) of the Lemma 3, with g =

Thus Corollary 1 implies that u satisfying (1.12), (1.13) is equal, a.e. to a continuous
function from [0, T ] into Y. We write u C0([0, T ]; Y).
12 Topics in Partial Differential Equations
There is a direct proof of Corolary 1, in J.-L. Lions [2] or W.A. Strauss [8].
In the following it will be proved a result to be applied in the study of mixed problems
for partial differential equation, usually called weak regularity.
By Cs([0, T ]; Y), we represent the space of weakly continuous functions form [0, T ] into
Y. This means that the mapping t hu(t), yi is continuous on [0, T ] for all y Y dual
of Y. Note that this functions are also called scalar continuous functions.
Theorem 1. Let X, Y be two Banach spaces, X reflexive. Suppose X Y dense and the
injection of X in Y continuous. Then:
Proof: The second hand side of (1.13) is contained in the first, because Y X continuous
and dense.
Let us prove that the first hand side of (1.13) is included in the second. For this, it is
sufficient to prove that:
M is constant on [0, T ].
In fact, suppose (1.15) true for all t [0, T ]. Since X is reflexive, for each net tm t0
in [0, T ], there exists a subnet tn of tm such that
u(tn) X weakly in X
or
The right hand side of (1.18) goes to zero when 0, by (1.17) and by approximation
of x by y . Then
hu(tn), xi hu(t0), x i for all x X ,
= u(t0),
To achieve the proof of the Theorem 1, we need to prove (1.15), what shall be done
by the method of regularization.
In fact, let us define u as the function that is equal to u on [0, T ] and zero on the com-
plement. Represent by (n)nN a regularizing sequence,
Z that is, n 0, even, infinitely
differentiable on R, with compact support and n(s) ds = 1. We have u L (R; X).

Let us consider
Z

We have:

Since Y X is dense, we obtain form (1.23) and (1.20), (1.21) that u(t) = u(t), and
Let us consider two Hilbert spaces V, H. We suppose V H with dense and continuous
injection. Then we have for the duals H V dense and continuous injection. We identify
H to H , so we have
(1.24) V H = H V .
The inner products and norms in H and V, are, respectively, denoted by ( , ); | |; (( , ));

We prove that the function u 7 Au, from V V , is linear, continuous and for each
f V there exists u V such that Au = f. Then A is an isomorphism from V into V .

Find um(t) Vm , such that,
(um (t), v) + ((um(t), v)) = (f, v), v Vm ,
(1.31)
um(0) = u0m u0 strongly in V
um (0) = u1m u1 strongly in H.
The linear system of ordinary differential equations (1.31) has solution on [0, tm] ,
tm < T . To extend the aproximate solution to [0, T ] we need estimates as we shall obtain.

Let v = 2um(t) in (1.31). We get:

Then,
It follows from (1.34), (1.35) and weak star compactness of bounded sets in a Banach
space, that there exists a subsequence u of um , such that

sense. By Theorem 1, we have u Cs([0, T ; V), u Cs([0, T ]; H).

To prove the identity (1.67) it is sufficient to prove that the right hand side of (1.67) is

In this section we shall analyse the semilinear partial differential equations of type
u u + F(u) = 0. The method is based on some results of convergence of measurable
functions, proved by W.A. Strauss [8], which generalize the Lemma 1.3 of J.L. Lions [2],
employed when F(s) = |s|p s, > 0 a real number.
Theorem 4 (W.A. Strauss). Let be a bounded open set of Rn, (u)N be a sequence
of real measurable functions defined on . Let us consider the sequences (F)N ,
(G)N of functions from R to R such that F u , G u are measurable on for
N. We suppose:
(a) FZ u converges to v almost everywhere on .
(b) |F(u(x))G(u(x))| dx < C, where the constant C is independent of N.
(c) G as F .
Then, we have:

(e) F u converges to v strongly in L1().
therefore:

for all N, that is, the sequence of integrals of F u is bounded. Then, (1.76) and
the condition (a), imply that (F u)N satisfies the conditions of Fatous lemma, which
implies that |v| = lim |F u| is integrable on , which proves part (d) of the theorem.
To complete the proof, observe that from Egorovs theorem, given > 0 there exists a
measurable set 0 such that (0) < and (F u)N converges to v, uniformly
on 0 . Then, we have:

because, by hypothesis, the sequence is bounded in Lq(). It follows from Fatous lemma

let us apply the Theorem 4, when F(s) = s and G(s) = s p , for all N. These
functions are measurable. If we define v = |u u|p, we have:

(c) G(s) + when F(s) +.
It follows from the Theorem 4, that (|u u|p)N converges to zero in L1(), that
is, (u)N converges to u in Lp().
To prove that (u)N converges to u weakly in Lq(), we have to prove:

We know that this is true for all v Lp() by the strong convergence in Lp(), in
particular for v D(). By density (1.79) is true for v Lq ().
The method which shall be used to study the semilinear partial differential equations
u u + F(u) = 0, begins with the case F : R R a Lipschitz functions such that
sF(s) > 0 for all s R. In the following step we study the continuous case, i.e., F : R R
is continuous and sF(s) 0 for all s R. Observe that the Lemma 5, shows that each
continuous functions F : R R, such that sF(s) 0, can be approximated, uniformly in
bounded sets of R, by Lipschitz functions of the same type and derivable except in a finite
number of points. In the proof shall be used the W.A. Strauss convergence theorem.

u1 u1 F(u0) = 0 in Q
(1.85) u = 0 on

u1(0) = u0 , u1 (0) = u1 .
It is sufficient to observe that (1.85) is in the conditions of the Theorem 2, cf. Section 2.
In fact, take V = H10(), H = L2(). We have:
Note that H1() is the dual of the Sobolev space H10(). We take A = and we have:

is Lipschitz and F(0) = 0. It follows that the Problem (1.85) is in the conditions of the

Suppose we have proved the existence of a unique solution of (1.84), for n1, satisfying

By virtue of the peculiarity of the initial data u0 , u1 and the force f, we need to modify
the concept of solution for (). This new concept was introduced in Lions-Magenes [3].
There are, at least, two methods to prove existence and uniqueness for solution of ().
One called Direct Method consisting in approximate () by weak problems as studied in
the Section 2. A second method, called Transposition Method which is an application of
Rieszs representation theorem. We consider in this notes the Direct Method.
Let us consider for h L2(0, T ; L2()) the mixed problem:
v v = h

This backward problem is well posed in Sobolev spaces. It is sufficient consider the
change of variables ^v(t) = v(T t). By Section 2, Theorem 2, we deduce the existence
and uniqueness of a solution v with the following regularity:
Let us represent by

A massa

C0 0, T ; L2 () .
W com a estrutura Hilbertiana dada por
ZT ZT
2 2
kkW = k (t)k dt + | (t)|2 dt

satisfazendo
(5.4) b (u, ) = L () , W.
Tem-se
ZT ZT ZT
2 1
b (, ) = k (t)k dt
( (t) , (t)) dt = k (t)k2 dt + | (0)|2 ,
0 0 0 2
porque (T ) = 0.
Substituindo-se em b (, ) , obtem-se
b (, ) C () kkW , > 0.

Introduction
u = 0 in Q,
u = 0 on 0 = 0 ]0, T [ ,
(6.1)
u
+ u + |u| u = f on 1 = 1 ]0, T [ ,
u (0) = u0 on ,
where the prime stands the derivative with respect to t, u/ represents the normal
derivative of u and is a positive real number satisfying appropriate conditions.
As the solution of system depends on x and t and the equation (6.1)1 does not have
temporal derivative of the function u, this system is not of Cauchy-Kovalevsky type.
This problem associated to evolution equation on lateral boundary was studied in [1]
and [2], both motivated by the idea applied in Lions ([3], pp. 134) , which consists to
reduce the problem (6.1) in a model of mathematical physics on the manifolds 1. In this
work we use the technical due to Lions ([3], pp. 471) , which transforms the system (6.1)
in a Cauchy-Kovalevsky type one by means of a suitable perturbations in the equation
(6.1)1 . The solution of (6.1) is obtained as limit of this perturbed problem.
The contents of this work are as follows: in the Section 6.1 we give some notations
and state assumptions. In Section 6.2 we obtain the solution of (6.1) as singular limit of
solution of the perturbed system.

The existence and uniqueness of weak solution of (6.3) is guaranteed by the following
result:

Theorem 6.2.1. Let as in (6.2) , u0 H 2 (1) and f Lq (1), q = ( + 2) / ( + 1) .
Then, for each > 0, there exists a unique function u : Q R satisfying

and the initial condition

Remark 6.2.1. Note that, given u0 H 2 (1) , there exists w0 V, because the trace
1
application 0 : V H 2 (1) is surjective.
Once guaranteed the existence and uniqueness of weak solution of the problem (6.3) ,
we can consider the following relative result to the problem (6.1) :
Theorem 6.2.2. Under the conditions of Theorem 6.2.1, then, as 0, the solution u
of system (6.3) verifies
u u weakly in L2 (0, T ; V) ,
Proof of Theorem 6.2.1. We employ the Faedo-Galerkins method. Indeed, let {w}N
be a Hilbertian basis of V and, for each m N, we consider Vm = [w1, w2, ..., wm] the
subspace of V generated by the first m vectors of {w}N . Let us find an approximate
P
solution um Vm of the type um (x, t) = mj=1 gjm (t) wj (x) , where gjm (t) are found
as solutions of the initial value problem for the system of ordinary differential equations
(um (t) , v) + ((um (t) , v)) + (um, v) + (|um| um, v) = (f (t) , v) ,
1 1 1
(6.8)
um (0) = w0m w0 strongly in V.
178 On an Evolution Problem on Manifolds
The system (6.8) has solution on an interval [0, tm[ , with tm < T. This solution can
be extended to the whole interval [0, T ] as a consequence of the a priori estimates that
shall be proved in the next step.
Estimates. Making v = um (t) in (6.8) , integrating from 0 to t tm and using the
Youngs inequality we obtain

|um (t)| ds + kum (s)k ds + |um (t)|2 + |um (s)|+2
+2 ds
2 0 2 q 0
Z
2 1 2 1 T
|w0m| + |0 (w0m)|2 + |f (s)|qq ds.
2 2 q 0
By the hypotheses about the data, we can assert

h 1
i h 1 i
where h, i represents the duality between V H 2 (1) and H 2 (1) V . In this
way,
(6.12) k{um (t) , 0um (t)}k 1 C1 |f (t) |um| um|q + kum (t)k .
V H 2 (1 )
Section 2 Singular Limit 179
Therefore, according to hypothesis about f and (6.11) ,it follows by (6.12) that
1
(6.13) ({um (t) , 0um (t)}) is bounded in Lq 0, T ; V H 2 (1) .
Limit of approximate solutions. Thanks to (6.10) , (6.11) and (6.13) , there exists a
subsequence, still denoted by (um) , such that
um u weak in L 0, T ; L2 () ,
um u weakly in L2 (0, T ; V) ,
um u weak in L 0, T ; L2 (1) ,
um u weakly in Lq (0, T ; V ) ,
(6.14)
1
um u weakly in Lq 0, T ; H2 (1) ,
|um| um weakly in Lq (1) ,
um (T ) weakly in L2 () ,
um (T ) weakly in L2 (1) .
d d
(6.15) (u (t) , v) + ((u (t) , v)) + (u (t) , v)1 + (, v)1 = (f, v)1 , v V.
dt dt
It remains to prove that = |u| u. Since the function h (s) = |s| s is increasing
monotonic, we have
ZT ZT ZT
(6.16) (|um| um, um)1 dt (|um| um, v)1 dt (|v| v, um v)1 dt 0.
0 0 0
Taking w in place of w, we get the inequality in inverse sense. In this way, we can
conclude that ZT
( |u| u, w)1 dt = 0, w L+2 (1)
0
(6.21) w L 0, T ; L2 (1) L+2 (1) ,

(6.22) (w, v) + ((w, v)) + (w, v)1 + (|u| u |b
u| u
b , v)1 = 0, v V
dt dt
and the initial condition
(6.23) w (, 0) = 0 on .
Similarly to proof of the Theorem 6.2.1, we can use monotony method to conclude
that = |u| u.
Using the convergences (6.25) in (6.6) we obtain the variational formulated of the
system (6.1)
d
((u, v)) + (u, v)1 + (|u| u, v)1 = (f, v)1 , v V.
dt
By (6.24)3 and (6.24)5, we can use the Aubin-Lions compactness lemma to extract a
1
subsequence of (0u) such that 0u 0u in C0 [0, T ] ; H2 (1) which combining
with (6.7) it follows the initial condition
u (, 0) = u0 on 1.
In this way, we have the solution of (6.1) as limit of the perturbed problem (6.3) .
