Like a wine’s terroir, the quality of olive oil is largely determined by the
characteristics of the region where it is produced. ¶ The climate and the
quality of the soils are vital to the development of the genetic heritage of
the olive tree. ¶ Then there is the mysterious science behind its fabrica-
tion: from choosing the exact degree of maturation of the harvest until the
extraction process, as well as the way the olives are carried to the press,
everything counts towards the final result. It’s nothing short of alchemy.

Close to the age of 46 Camané is one of fado’s main male voices. ¶ His tours
have taken him as far as Japan and Canada. When in these distant lands his
homesickness is quenched with traditional Portuguese food and olive oil as-
sures him of the authenticity he seeks in all things. ¶ Over a calm chat, with
the afternoon sun coming through the window, Camané goes over the last
few decades. ¶ An interview to be enjoyed with bread soaked in olive oil, at
the sound of Lucília do Carmo and Maria Teresa de Noronha.

PROFILE
A forced period of isolation, due to
hepatitis at the age of seven, led to
him listening to all his parent’s fado
records. In 1979, aged 12, he won a
Fado festival. The best prize was to
record an album produced by António
Chaínho, a master.
He stopped singing when his voice
broke, but aged 17 he was back in the
Lisbon fado houses. His first album,
Uma Noite de Fados, was released in
1995. After that came Na Linha da
Vida, in 1998 and Esta Coisa da Alma,
in 2000, released simultaneously in
Portugal, Belgium and Holland. One
year later he recorded Pelo Dia Dentro.
His next project was in pop music,
with Os Humanos, a tribute band
which recorded unedited songs by
António Variações. Over the last few
years Camané recorded Sempre em
Mim (2008) and Do Amor e dos Dias
(2010) and also took part in António
Chaínho’s most recent album.
He has also stepped on to different
stages and participated in musicals
directed by Filipe la Féria such as
Maldita Cocaína, Grande Noite and
Cabaré, as well as a show built around
the work of Fernando Pessoa, in 2002,

Memórias
de infância
São cheiros.
Sentimentos que vão e vêm.
Ruídos pela casa fora com o sol
ainda escondido.
É o meu avô a molhar o pão
numa tigela com azeite.
As talhas guardadas em casa,
mesmo por debaixo das escadas.
Um quarto escuro, fresco,
em que não entrávamos
mas apetecia-nos.
É a minha avó à nossa espera,
pela noite fora,
a fritar batatas em azeite.
Os mergulhos nas arcas dos cereais.
A chuva a começar e a azeitona
a rolar para fora dos panos
com o avô a chamar-nos.
É o almoço apressado
porque ainda há tanto para fazer.
Bater a rama, podar, escolher a azeitona
e andar para o lagar.
São vidas dependentes da terra.
De vontades e desejos alheios.
É o azeite que se entranha nas madeiras
do soalho e nos oferece
um cheiro reconfortante.
CHILDHOOD MEMORIES. Smells. Fleeting emotions. Noises around the house when the sun still sleeps.
My grandfather dipping bread into a bowl of olive oil. The containers kept in the house, just under the stairs. A dark cool room, which we wanted
to enter but from which we were barred. My grandmother waiting for us, throughout the night, frying potatoes in olive oil. Diving into the grain.
The rain beginning to fall and the olives rolling off the tarpaulins, granny calling us. A hurried lunch, so much still to do. Beating the branches,
choosing the olives and heading to the press. Lives that depend on the land. On the whims and wishes of others. Olive oil which soaks into the
woodwork, leaving us with that comforting smell.
