do herói e seu fim, este se vê como um vencedor e ri de sua própria fortura;

The major novels of the tradition are, it seems to me, not simply allegories of the
inner life. Practical reality continues to impinge on the cherished inwardness of the
hero, and precisely this process is the source of the irony, the obliqueness, the
uncertainty which so many commentators have noticed. (SWALES, 1978, p. 29)

Onde há muito espaço, há muito tempo. Diz-se que eles são o povo

tempo que temos é tão exíguo quanto o espaço do nosso continente

A orgia. (...) no

As neo-slave narratives surgiram pelas circunstâncias sociais,
expressado no trabalho ficcional, apresentando a voz afro-americana.
A escrita
Enquanto a narrativa

(1993, p. 77).
voltada a interesses próprios.

totalmente a mercê do “comprador”. A narrativa continua com “It was as
if the day’s sky, its suffusing light, all the powers of the universe were
bailiffs to those two examiners, seizing a twelve-year-old village girl and
holding her up to the stern scrutiny of those two pairs of eyes. I had no
place to hide.”
família: “Every day you all rebuked me: precocious, impertinent girl! A
bitter remark is the consolation of the inept; I forgive all your remarks.”
Adichie nos diz que “we say to girls: You can have ambition, but
not too much. You should aim to be successful but not too successful;
7

se levanta – no original The Sun Also Rises.
Eliot, F. Scott Fitzgerald,
Ezra Pound e Sinclair Lewis.

No original: I always worked until I had something done and I always stopped when
I knew what was going to happen next. That way I could be sure of going on the next
day. But sometimes when I was starting a new story and I could not get it going, I
would sit in front of the fire and squeeze the peel of the little oranges into the edge of
the flame and watch the sputter of blue that they made. I would stand and look out
over the roofs of Paris and think, “Do not worry. You have always written before and
you will write now. All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest
sentence that you know.” So finally I would write one true sentence, and then go on
from there. It was easy then because there was always one true sentence that I knew
or had seen or had heard someone say. If I started to write elaborately, or like someone
introducing or presenting something, I found that I could cut that scrollwork or
ornament out and throw it away and start with the first true simple declarative
sentence I had written.

apresentou o livro The backwash of the war escrito por Ellen N. La Motte, que era
Ela dizia “Cut out words. Cut everything out, except what you saw, what
happened.” (Corte as palavras. Corte tudo, exceto o que você viu, o que aconteceu. –

pertence a você; o bem e o mal, o êxtase, o remorso e a tristeza, as

alcançou a idade adulta.
(HEMINGWAY, 2012).
temos a seguinte passagem:
saírem do restaurante, Al e Max conseguem, efetivamente, matar o Sueco.
seguintes trechos:
16
chamado A clean well lighted place (HEMINGWAY, 1991, p. 288)

a personagem.” (GIESELER, 2011, p. 13, tradução nossa18). O uso desses
recursos pode ser percebido no trecho abaixo:
18
No original: “[...] approximates the facts in the story to the way facts unfold in “real

Determinants of Inversion
very dear to him or her; however, only few associates, if at all, know about
this loss; thus, while the public celebrates their hero or heroine, he or she
participates mainly to protect the public’s happiness but not pretentiously
although deep within is a heart overwhelmed by regrets, hence, at once
happy and sad (this is not ‘neither happy nor sad’, ‘either sad or happy’ or
‘half sad and happy’), at once self-fulfilled and frustrated, at once comedy
and tragedy (this is not tragicomedy).
An inverse framework can also be like: a community or group is
faced with a momentous situation that also creates a vacuum for potential
heroes or heroines to emerge; however, there is already someone with a
hero or heroine attitude also equipped with a philosophic mind that
critiques goings-on in society; this character is generally unknown or
known only to a few; he or she is courageous and magnanimous but has a
fault in behaviour; an interplay of knowledge, ignorance, foreseen and
unforeseen circumstances take advantage of the needs and/or faults of the
community and this character’s to create a major problem that affects the
community; another factor different from this momentous situation pushes
this potential hero or heroine into an experience that becomes a turning
point in his or her life; this turning point experience unfolds in a way that
later connects with the (worsening) situation facing the community;
thereafter, the potential hero or heroine cannot but step up to fill the hero
or heroine vacuum, a decision that deprives him or her the comforts of a
self-regulated life; determined to overcome that momentous situation for
the community, the hero or heroine examines and adopts an option; with
some doggedness, he or she finally achieves that feat; however, while the
community begins festivities in honour of their hero or heroine, he or she
is privately emotionally torn asunder because unknown to (most of) the
community, the process that led to victory also led to the loss of something
very dear (a person, property or virtue); although the hero or heroine had
foreseen this might happen, he or she could never avoid it despite all
efforts; and finally, while the hero or heroine joins the community to
celebrate the victory, he or she is also ripped apart by regrets and flooded
by existential questions; and lacking catharsis, the state of affairs (also
triggered in the audience) is: at once happy and sad, at once self-fulfilled
and frustrated.

on her fate seems to centre on the priority of the needs of the collective
over those of the individual’. Similarly, the characteristic state of affairs
surrounding an inverse transition from private to public circumstances and
concession to requirements from the public dovetails with the vision of
the Nietzschean declaration that ‘in the heroic effort of the individual to
attain universality, in the attempt to transcend the curse of individuation
and to become the one world-being, he suffers in his own person the
primordial contradiction that is concealed in things, which means that he
commits sacrilege and suffers’ (cited in Akwanya, 2008:32).

A critical look at tragedy and comedy will bring to the fore areas
of convergence and divergence with inversion, which will facilitate a
better understanding of inversion as a new contribution to literature and
literary criticism.
Since Aristotle’s Poetics, tragedy has always attracted a great deal
of critical attention probably much more than comedy and tragicomedy.
In Schopenhauer’s (1969:252) view, tragedy deserves to be called ‘the
summit of poetic art’, a view that claims a very important position for
tragedy in literature. Yerima (2003:46) makes the relevant contribution
that as a word, tragedy comes from two Greek words, ‘tragos’ (goat) and
‘ode’ (song) and locates the origin of tragic drama in the ‘celebration and
worship of the Greek god, Dionysus, who was a god of nature and fertility
[the three fecundity or Dionysian festivals were Lenaea, Rural, and the
City of Great Dionysia] quite as much as the god of wine’ and in
ceremonial rites at the gravesides of culture-heroes and demi-gods.
Nwabueze (2011:11-12) in turn makes the interesting contribution
of providing a description of the first ever drama which was performed on
stage by Thespis (550-500 BCE) in the sixth century BCE during a feast
of Dionysus and at which about fifteen thousand Greek citizens were
present. He narrates how, in the course of the ceremony, Thespis breaks
away from a chorus of fifty men performing dithyramb and impersonates
Dionysus and that by this singular act, Thespis accrues acclaim as the first
ever actor (hypocrite, which literally means answerer) and first ever writer
of tragedy.
On a general note, however, Aristotle’s Poetics plays a significant
role in the popularity and critical appreciation of tragedy. His definition
and analysis of tragedy – largely anchored on his admiration and analysis
of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex (first performed circa 429 BCE), which he

The basic element in determining the action of a play is the dramatic conflict
which grows out of the interplay of opposing forces in a plot. The opposing
forces may be ideas, interests or wills. While presenting the conflict there
must also be a cause of opposition, or a goal within the dramatic action of
the play. The real plot of tragedy begins with the opening of a conflict and
ends with its resolution. The middle of the tragedy consists of the
development and fluctuations of the conflict. The greatness of a tragedy
depends on the manner the dramatist initiates, develops and concludes the
conflict, the way how [sic] he handles it.

Pagden, 2008:67). Treating people like slaves means treating them with
contempt and to subject them to ideological and practical social
frameworks that preclude, deter or stamp out dissent, resistance and
rebellion. By implication, Aristotle prefered Greek empire’s conquered
peoples pacified and resigned to their fates. In this wise, bias rather than
logic was probably behind Aristotle’s recommendation of catharsis for
tragedy.
It is also significant that despite his reverence for Aristotle,
Alexander the Great rather implemented a policy of respect, integration
and reconciliation with conquered people. This had the intended effect of
putting him in a good light with them and placating or ameliorating the
circumstances of those conquered people and their deposed rulers and
which, thus, undermined potential rebellion. However, this policy too had
a catarthic effect as intended.
Had Aristotle been a citizen of a conquered nation, a deposed ruler
or a slave, it is less likely he would recommend catharsis since a state of
mind like that would deny him and fellow citizens the visions and
opportunities of recovering their independence whether by peaceful or
violent methods. A thinker writing from the flipside mindset of a captive
or slave would rather more likely recommend not catharsis but memento,
which here refers to designated indices or factors that remind one and
relive memories of a significant event such as a tragic experience and also
motivate one towards a reawakening, a resurgence or rebellion.
This critical questioning of Aristotle’s catharsis so far has shown
how personal interests or socio-political bias can affect how one
approaches literature. Literature can indeed be politicized, which is also
in line with Aristotle’s popular dictum that the human person is a political
animal (πολιτιχὸν ξῷον), a view that has been meaningfully explored by
Mulgan and some other critics. Many people today are inclined to believe
that political aggression and domination are integral to social development
and transformations as people compete for the world’s resources. No
wonder too that in his Grundrisse, Karl Marx (cited in Eagleton, 1976:5)
offers a broad view where the history of art is considered an evidence of
complexity in the relationship between the base (the economic structure
of a society) and the superstructure (totality of ideologies: politics,
literature and art, philosophy, law, and so forth).

THE KITE RUNNER: A COSMOPOLITAN IMPRESSION
Eventually, because of the changing political climate, Amir and his father
are forced to flee Afghanistan. Amir views coming to America as an
opportunity to leave his past behind. Although Amir and Baba toil to
create a new life for themselves in the United States, the past is unable to
stay buried. The living a life of refugee becomes difficult. When it rears
its ugly head, Amir is forced to return to his homeland to face the demons
and decisions of his youth, with only a slim hope to make changes.
This study attempts to uncover the problems in The Kite Runner
faced by different characters like Amir, Agha, Sohrab etc who represent
the refugee made by the changes of geo-political scenario of Afghanistan.
It also, at a time, questions the role of nation-state like Pakistan and USA
for providing refugee rights. Similarly, embraces the notion of domination
by Assef, a representative of state to refugee or minority groups.
To deal with the issues pointed above, this paper is divided into
three major parts. The first part highlights the notion of refugees and
historical background for refugees in Afghanistan. This part presents how
refugee problem emerged in Afghanistan. Second part is the important
part of this paper where it pinpoints the major refugee problems, their
hardships, their helpless situation in the shelters and the role of nations-
states to respond this problem. The major and serious questions of ideal
asylum and concept of cosmopolitanism are brought into discussion in this
section. With references and facts highlighted as the main issue of the
paper, it brings thereupon the relevant cosmopolitan theoretical concepts
of Derrida, Foucault, Levinas, Hannah Arendt, Balibar and Hemel and try
to connect the refugee crisis of The Kite Runner in a global spectrum. It
brings different published and online literature including the reports of
different humanitarian organizations for the necessary facts, figures,
reviews, remarks, data and ideas of Afghan refugee crisis. It hereby tries
to correlate these literatures on Afghan refugee problem with the
theoretical notions to prove that the role of Europe and other host countries
are not sufficient to address these refugees. They have yet more to do for
humanity, human rights and refugees. The paper, then, concludes based
on the three earlier issues and understanding upon them, the paper
concludes.
2. Notion of Refugee, redefinition and historical background of
refugees in Afghanistan:

It is also clear from his opinion that refugees do not get the rights
only because they are taken as non- citizen in a host country. Because,
citizenship is only a key with which one can open the door of rights. As
long as the countries of asylums do not get confused between citizenship
rights and human rights or as long as they do not reduce human rights to
citizen rights, there is the high risk of security of refugees in the world.
These risks of refugees should be overcome as Emmanuel Levinas
suggests, “Life can thus mean only life worthy of the name; life in the full
sense of the term: exile, of course, but not prison, no hard labour, and no
concentration camp. Life which is life. The humanism or humanitarianism
of the cities of refuge!” (42). As per Levinas’ argument, human life should
never be devoid of humanism or humanitarianism no matter it is in prison
or exile. City of refuge is what functions as the solution to all the human
rights concerns of refugees.
The shelter owners or asylum providing nations’ tendency is full of
loopholes. They knowingly create demarcation line between human-
citizen rights and pretend to be welcoming for the bare lives. There should
be hidden motive behind such tendency. They try to silence the voice of
refugee and dominate them with an utter discrimination between a citizen
and human right as Etienne Balibar urges in Citizen Subject, an attempt to
comment on Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (1798),
argues Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, the legal
landmark of human rights problematizes the rights itself when it marks a
rupture between right of the man and of the citizen. He believes that the
issues as such should not rely on duality. This duality has created a whole
lot of confusion and hence the refugees are destined to live a trapped life.
The does not clarify if the life of man or citizen is important thereby. This
has encouraged people in power to prefer one over other and be a
totalitarian in the name of humanity (44). This is the case with Afghan
refugees too. Though they are given shelters in neighbouring countries,
they are deprived of natural, that is, unalienable right of human being.
They are starving, dying and tortured. The innocent people are charged of
being terrorist or criminal for no reason. As many refugees from conflict
zones continue to seek asylum in Europe and other neighboring countries
they are scared of insecurities. They worry that the flow of refugees can
dilute their country’s relatively homogenous cultural identity, increase the

danger of terrorism and exploit the entire system. Like Balibar’s argument
on unjust demarcation of citizen and man, the Afghan refugees should also
be guaranteed with equality, liberty and choice of their life by the host
countries.
The Kite Runner, a novel by Khalid Hosseine, is a snapshot on
historical background of Afghanistan. It draws a picture of regime change
from kingdom to presidential system. It even portrays the rise of Taliban
and its consequences in the geo-political scenario. Afghanistan once was
a kingdom, but the kingship was put to end by the attack of Soviet
Totalitarian regime which helped the cousin of king. As the novel Kite
Runner indicates the downfall of kingdom, “…inside sat farmed family
pictures; an old greeny photo of my grandfather and king Nadir Shash
taken in 1931, two year before the king’s assassination (3).” The history
of Afghanistan tells it was a kingdom. King used to rule it till 1973. After
the king was killed, the political scenario had been changed. Somehow, it
brought the changes in the scenario of the politics after four decades of the
king’s assassination monarchy was no more in Afghanistan. As the novel
further outlines:
As it turned out, they hadn’t shot much of anything that night of July
17, 1973. Kabul awoke the next morning to find that the monarchy was
a thing of past. The king Zabir Shah, was away in Italy. In his absence,
his cousin, Daud Khan had ended the king’s forty years reign without
a bloodless coup (29)
You! The Hazara! Look at me, when I am talking to you, “The soldier
barked” …I know your mother, did you know that? I knew her real good.
I took her from behind by that creek. What a tight little sugary cunt she
had! The soldier was saying shaking hands with others, grinning. Later

in the dark, after the movie had started, I heard Hassan next to me
croaking (5-6)
The Hazaras were exploited severely. There was even the terror of
sexual exploitation by ruling class. It compelled them to flee. The
exploitation of Hassan by his own friend and half-brother, Amir is quite
notable in the novel. Kamal and Assef are the characters of the novel have
fallen in majority group, exploit Hassan very badly. The father of Hassan,
Ali is treated very badly. He has to live with someone as obedient
houseman who had seduced his own wife.
Later Amir and his father have to suffer from the ruling class people.
They have to leave the place of origin and flee towards the USA. Their
condition was not same as the citizens of America. They are somehow
treated as the second-class citizen. They have to work miserably to make
their living. Likewise, the panic situation of refugee is seen in the life of
Sohrab. He is treated as animal. He even commits an attempt to suicide
when he comes to know that he has to stay in orphanage. He even remains
silent after he has been taken to America. It shows the loss of socio-
cultural life of Afghani people in the world of other.
In the novel, three different generations are found to have been
exploited, that is, Ali, Hassan and his son Sohrav. The historical
background of these generation and history of Afghanistan depicts the
clear picture of the formation of refugee and their suffering with the
struggle to gain the livelihood in different corners of the world sipping
their bitterness of the life silently.
Generally, it is believed that refugees are those people who are
refused to get provided with real identity in a different world. It is an
output of some socio-political changes of the nation which compels
certain group to live their place of origin as they find the place more
difficult or vulnerable for their livelihood. According to According to the
1995 Refugee Convention, a refugee is a person who is compelled to leave
country of own nationality due to fear of being persecuted (Article 1, 1951
Refugee Convention).
Hannah Arendt in her writing We Refugee defines refugees are those
who have not done anything in the political scenario of the changes, but
they are compelled to seek asylum (110). Like Hassan and his father really
do not do anything in the life of Amir. But they have to leave house of

Amir. They are compelled to seek asylum in order to be safe from the
bitterness of Amir.
Ali says,
The young woman pulled the shawl down over her face. Burst into tear.
The toddler sitting in her husband’s lap started crying too. The husband’s
face had become as pale as the moon hovering above. He told Karim to
ask “Mr. Soldier sahib” to show a little mercy, may be, he had a sister or
a mother, may be, he had a wife too (95).
husband though the situation is very harsh. The situation of refugee is very
harsh; really seems to be very miserable. They even have to live the life
of animal. There is no any humanistic approach. They hardly get things as
humans are supposed to get. They have to flee to seek the safe land even
it is hard for them. However, they compromise it they really have panic
situation. The novel reveals:
You open your mouth. Open it too wide your jaws creak. You order your
lungs to draw air. Now you need air, need it now but your airways ignore
you. They collapse, tighten, squeeze and suddenly you’re breathing
through a drinking straw. Your mouth closes and your lips purse. And
all you can manage is a strangle croak. Your hands wriggle and shake.
Somewhere dam has cracked open and a flood of sweat spills, drenches
your body. You want to scream. You would if you could. But you have
to breathe to scream (102).

right to human right. “One is protected, one is above death and murder,
during the lesson, or when asking questions and listening to replies (44).”
For him, if we are conscious enough, there must be these cities of refuge
for such half-innocent and half guilty parties. The city of refuge is such
that has a space of sanctuary for the exiled (a manslayer – blood avenger).
Similarly, blending Levinas and Kantian notion of cosmopolitan
city, Jaques Derrida proposes his own version. Derrida believes that the
origin of law is violence. He uncovers the idea of universality and equates
universal hospitality with universal rights of man. He highlights that the
foundation of ethics is hospitality, the readiness and the inclination to
welcome the other into one’s home. Ethics, he claims, is hospitality. Pure
and unconditional hospitality is a desire that underscores the conditional
hospitality necessary in our relationships with others. He recommends
open city or authentic sanctuary for those asylum seekers, exiles and
refugees and analyses the history of minority like stateless, homeless and
deported people, and believes that cosmopolitanism should be a traditional
hospitality: more awake and more aware.
Derrida here tries to envision a different city which would support
minorities. He seems to accept any blame for establishing new city of
refuge. Such city would establish universal rights of man and world
brotherhood (8).
Despite the unlimited theories and concepts, the idea of
cosmopolitanism and cosmopolitan city has become mere a dream in
today’s world. Though the affluent western countries are claiming their
shelters for refugee to be ideal cosmopolitan cities, these are so only in
appearance. The total inclusion is still pending. We struggle to ensure
things up, some groups are always left out in any case. Similar is the case
with Afghan refugee, their rights and the treatment of the countries of
refuge.
Despite the helping hands coming along the different parts of the
world, refugees can never feel things like home. It is really bad to have no
home even if someone gives you the palace. Loosing originality, culture,
ownness and above all the soil of birth is painful. When it comes to the
issue of bare lives, even the popular democratic countries fail to guarantee
human rights. Be it United States of America or any other affluent western
country, the minimum standard of child right is not adopted. The children

solved. This is what the need of Afghan refugees today is. This is the need
of all the bare lives today.
Not to be confined just in case of Afghanistan but the cities of refuge
have problems throughout the world. The above findings entail that when
it comes to respond the refugees, some countries are more liberal, and
others are not. The analysis also finds that be it Europe or America, the
real refugees who have already left their place of origin and who are
looking for kind hands of refuge are denied of basic human rights- the
natural rights. They are torn between man-citizen demarcation—an
exclusive policy of nation-state. Refugees are destined to live life as
‘other’ who are the victim of different socio-political problems like
exploitation, racism, xenophobia, less wage, discrimination, violation of
human rights etc. The finding of the paper therefore pinpoints that the
world at large has failed to address the refugee problems and their rights
due to lack of common policy of a genuine city of refuge among the
nation-states. The world has to go above all these barriers to see the world
brotherhood, world citizens and above all the humanity in its real form. I,
therefore, as an urge to humanity, find it apt to propose my own concept
of city of refuge in the following paragraphs, which, I assume will solve
the problems of refugees, stateless, exiles and deported people.
Hassan is the Hazara boy who was treated very badly by Assef and
Kamal. They think Hazara are only the servants. They do not have any
equal to them. They are mere puppet in their hands. They are the sources
of fun for them and a matter made for exploitation. Assef, Kamal and to
some extend Amir himself do not consider as human. He is treated as if
he is no more human and he does not have any right to be. It shows how
Hazaras are made refugee in their own place. It depicts how they are
deprived from rights.
Kamal, the Afghan boy is dead. His father expresses his miserable
situation. He is totally helpless. He requests his God Allah to help him.
The condition of the refugee is vulnerable when they are heading to get
refuge. On the way to asylum, the life of refugee may come to an end.
Whereas, Kamal’s father says:
breathe. Baba knelt beside him and curled and arm around his soldier. But
Kamal’s father shoved away and lunged for Karim who was standing nearby
with his cousin (104).

to meet death because he does not get the service of privilege as Balibar
says. So, the notion of Balibar is a critical approach towards the deed of
nation state, its failure to enhance rights to those who are rightless.
The treatment of citizens towards the refugee is not so good. They
do not show their interest in rights of migrants. Even in the workplace,
they are not considered as equal as native people. They do not deserve
some basic rights though human rights ensured them. The native seems to
be ignorant when the name of refugee right come into concern. Generally,
the people who are working in the place where the risk of life is very high,
certainly should get the health insurance. It is done for the native to some
extend but in case the migrants or the refugees are at work, the owner may
not show this concern. Agha, who has worked at gas station has not got
his insurance. He even does not ask his master for it. He cannot insist his
master to do so because he is a refugee. The notion is clear in the novel:
Even though Baba was a manager, at the gas station, the owner hadn’t
offered him health insurance, and Baba, in his recklessness had not
insisted. So, I took him to the country hospital in San Jose. The swallow
puffy-eyed doctor who saw us, introduced himself as a second-year
resident (129-130).
- 178 -
THE KITE RUNNER: A COSMOPOLITAN IMPRESSION
group of people which compelled them to leave their place and flee to
Pakistan. The novel conceptualizes the idea as:
That was the year that the Shorawi completed their withdrawal from
Afghanistan. It should have been a time of glory for Afghans instead the
war raised on, this time between Afghans and Mujahedin, against Soviet
puppet government of Najibullah and Afghan refugee kept fucking to
Pakistan (158). As Derrida conceptualizes:
Whenever the state is neither the foremost author of, nor the foremost
guarantee against the violence which forces refugee or exile to flee, it is
often powerless to ensure the protection and the liberty of its citizen before
a terrorist menace. Whether or not, it has a religious or nationalist alibi (6).
Derrida mentions the reasons for refugee to flee to the safe place.
Refugees are made due to the failure of nation-state. It cannot secure its
citizen from emerging threat. The threat of life vibrant cause to flee the
citizens and compels them to be refugees. The reasons are, may be of
terrorists, fear or dispute in religious orthodoxies or other internal or
external factors. Similarly, the arrival of Amir to Afghanistan after long
time of exile in USA makes him feel again, he is in his homeland. The soil
of the native land shows the feeling of acquaintance. The refugees have
desire to return back to their real land. The chance of returning back to
their home can give a real essence of pleasure. They even remember their
glorious history of past. Amir really feels refreshed and relaxed when he
puts his steps in the land of Afghanistan. He says:
The ground was cool under my bare feet and suddenly, for the first time
since we had crossed the border, I felt like I was back. After all these years,
I was home again, standing on the soil of my ancestor. This was the soil
on which my great-grandfather had married his third wife a year before
dying in the cholera epidemic that hit Kabul in 1915 (205).
Amir cannot stop remembering his roots with the soil. It has brought
reminiscence in his psyche and feels like he is in the path of his root of
ancestors.
Similarly, Hosseini even presents xenophobic mentality of
totalitarianism and how the xenophobic people treat the refugees. The
- 179 -

I see this may turn out to be enjoyable after all. But there are things
traitors like you don’t understand…Like pride in your people, your
customs, your language. Afghanistan is like a beautiful mansion littered
with garbage, and someone has to take out the garbage. Ethnic cleansing
I like it. I like the sound of it (243-244).
But your father was a man torn between two halves. Amirjan! You and
Hassan. He loved you both but he could not love Hassan. The way he
longed to, openly and as a father. So he took it out on you instead- Amir,
the socially legitimate half represented the riches he had inherited and the
sin- with- impunity privileges that come with them. When he says you, he
saw himself. And his guilt. You are still angry and I realized it is far too
early to except you to accept this (259).
Levinas stresses that the people who commit crime are really
disliked by others. They are charged with bitter attitude. However, people
may show their pity after they come to know some innocent in the heart
of the guilty person. Agha, who seduced Ali’s wife is really a matter to
criticize. It shows the domination of so-called rich or powerful people to
powerless people. Amir shows his anger when he came to know about
from Rahim Khan. He even presents himself very harsh to Rahim Khan.
But his heart has been changed when he recalls the love of his father
towards Hassan. Agha somehow proves himself to be a source of
fatherhood to Hassan. Though he cannot be very frank or open to his
activities. He seems to be half guilty and half innocent. As a bio-physical
needs of his body and Ali’s wife compelled them to commit the crime. It
is Rahim Khan who advocates for Agha’s half guilty and half innocent
nature. May be, his deed of his guilt compels him to leave Afghanistan
and flee to America as it can function as a city for half innocent and half
guilty, city of refuge for Agha.
