As listas de espécies de fauna ameaçadas de extinção, as
chamadas listas vermelhas, realizadas com rigor científico e ofi-
cialmente reconhecidas, não devem ser subestimadas. São um
importante mecanismo de conservação da biota, pois orientam
para a priorização de políticas de proteção do meio ambiente
e servem de alerta contra as atividades de desmatamentos, as
ações predatórias, a poluição e as invasões biológicas que estão
por trás do desaparecimento das espécies. Seguindo a experi-
ência nacional, o Estado de São Paulo oficializou a primeira lista
vermelha do Estado com a publicação do Decreto nº 42.838 de
