ADJETIVOS COMPARATIVOS

1) COMPARATIVO DE IGUALDADE:
AS + ADJETIVO/ADVRBIO + AS Podemos traduzir o primeiro AS por TO e o segundo AS por
QUANTO.

Ex.: Jane is as tall as Paula.
My sister is as smart as Mary.
He sings as bad as John.

1.1) FORMA NEGATIVA DO COMPARATIVO DE IGUALDADE:
NOT AS/SO + ADJETIVO/ADVRBIO + AS Podemos substituir o primeiro AS por SO.

Ex.: Jane isn't so tall as Paula.
Jane isn't as tall as Paula.
He doesn't sing so (as) bad as John.

2) COMPARATIVO DE INFERIORIDADE:
LESS + ADJETIVO/ADVRBIO + THAN
Podemos traduzir o LESS por MENOS e o THAN por DO QUE.

Ex.: Jane is less tall than Paula.
Rita is less intelligent than her sister.

3) COMPARATIVO DE SUPERIORIDADE DE ADJETIVOS SINTTICOS:
ADJETIVO + ER/IER-Y + THAN Adjetivos sintticos so aqueles que tm apenas uma slaba na
pronncia ou que tm duas slabas, mas terminam em Y.

Ex.: tall, short, small, strong, funny.

Ex.: John is smaller than Paul.
Daniel is funnier than Ann.

4) COMPARATIVO DE SUPERIORIDADE DE ADJETIVOS ANALTICOS:
MORE + ADJETIVO + THAN

Adjetivos analticos so aqueles que tm mais de uma slaba e no terminam em Y. Ex.:beautiful,
intelligent.

Ex.: Sara is more beautiful than Lara.
Daniel is more intelligent than Ann

5) SUPERLATIVO DE ADJETIVOS SINTTICOS:
THE + ADJETIVO + EST/IEST-Y

Ex.: Carol is the youngest of her house.

6) SUPERLATIVO DE ADJETIVOS ANALTICOS:
THE + MOST + ADJETIVO

Ex.: Carol is the most beautiful of the class.

Obs: Caso haja advrbio em vez de adjetivo, utilizaremos o mesmo esquema utilizado para os
adjetivos analticos (grandes), tanto no comparativo de superioridade como no superlativo, com
exceo dos advrbios monossilbicos. Os advrbios que possuem uma nica slaba apresentam
a mesma forma que os adjetivos sintticos (pequenos):

Ex.: Jose speaks more quickly than his friend.
Ex.: She arrived sooner than expected.

7) CASOS IRREGULARES
Alguns casos fogem regra, pois modificam por completo o seu radical.

Ex.: Good no comparativo de superioridade, ele no ir ficar gooder, como se imaginava, mas o
correto better (than). E o superlativo the best.

Da mesma forma teremos:

Bad Worse (than) The worst
Little Less (than) The least
Far Farther/further (than) The farthest/furthest
Much/many More (than) The most
