East High School football players take a knee

MEMPHIS, Tenn.
Weeks before the controversy exploded in the
stadiums of the National Football League, East
High football players were making their own
statement by taking a knee during the anthem
in a game. If they want to take a knee they
should,a parent said. Even on the sidelines,
cheerleaders were kneeling in silence. No one
is getting violent, its just kneeling or standing,
said another parent. Since East High athletes
had already taken a knee in one previous
game, it seemed once the national anthem
started, they might continue in the matchup
Thursday night against Craigmont. They didnt
players from both teams took the field
without observing the anthem. It`s not clear
why the anthem wasnt played, but the ACLU
issued a statement supporting student-
athletes decision to protest injustice and not
be punished for their choice. Parents on both
sides of the Craigmont/East game agree. We
are not talking about disrespecting the flag; we
are talking about all the injustices taking place
and someone finally taking a stand. Know the
reason youre kneeling. Not just doing it
because everyone else is doing it. The Shelby
County School district also released
a statement Friday afternoon saying they
respect students right to free expression.
Students who kneel or join arms during the
national anthem are expressing their rights
protected by the First Amendment, officials
said. They said the district policy says no
student shall be compelled to participate in the
Pledge of Allegiance or National Anthem if the
student or the students parent/legal guardian
objects on religious, philosophical or other
grounds. The District does expect students
expressions to be respectful of others and
peaceful in nature, and that any
demonstration that impedes others or disrupts
safety will not be tolerated. But as the
stadium lights dim, parents say taking a knee
has a much bigger meaning than the outcome
of the game.

Semanas antes da polmica explodir nos estdios
da Liga Nacional de Futebol, os jogadores de
futebol da East High fizeram sua prpria
manifestao ao ajoelhar-se durante o hino em um
jogo."Se eles quiserem se ajoelhar devem", disse
um pai. Mesmo margem, as torcedoras estavam
de joelhos em silncio. "Ningum est sendo
violento, est apenas ajoelhado ou parado", disse
outro pai. Como os atletas do Mdio Leste j
haviam se ajoelhado em um jogo anterior, parece
que quando o hino nacional comeou, eles
poderiam continuar no confronto na noite de
quinta-feira contra o Craigmont. Eles no fizeram -
os jogadores das duas equipes tomaram o campo
sem perceber o hino. No est claro por que o hino
no foi executado, mas a ACLU emitiu uma
declarao apoiando a deciso dos estudantes-
atletas para protestar contra a injustia e no ser
punida por sua escolha. Os pais de ambos os
lados do jogo Craigmont / East concordam. "Ns
no estamos falando de desrespeitar a bandeira,
estamos falando de todas as injustias ocorrendo
e, finalmente, assumindo uma posio. "Saiba o
motivo pelo qual voc est ajoelhado. No apenas
fazendo isso porque todos os outros esto fazendo
isso. O distrito da escola do condado de Shelby
tambm divulgou uma declarao na sexta-feira
tarde dizendo que respeitam o direito do estudante
liberdade de expresso. "Estudantes que se
ajoelham ou prestam continncias durante o hino
nacional esto expressando seus direitos
protegidos pela Primeira Emenda", disseram
autoridades. Eles disseram que a poltica do
distrito diz que "nenhum estudante deve ser
obrigado a participar do juramento da lealdade ou
do hino nacional se o aluno ou o pai / tutor legal do
aluno se opuser por motivos religiosos, filosficos
ou outros. O distrito espera que os alunos sejam
"respeitosos aos outros e de natureza pacfica" e
que qualquer demonstrao que impea outros ou
perturbe a segurana "no ser tolerada..Mas,
quando o estdio se acendeu, os pais dizem que
ajoelhar-se tem um significado muito maior do que
o resultado do jogo.
