its president, two rival blocs became extant within the Chinese Communist
Party: the Maoist radical bloc which remained alone, and the moderate and
“revisionist” bloc which was actually in command. Open war between the two
blocs occurred in 1966 when Mao triggered the Cultural Revolution.
