Observações
• Exceto em alguns poucos casos ([1], [2]), esses pronomes só aparecem como
sujeitos da oração.
Exemplos:
Pooh is a very cute bear and he loves honey. - O Puff é um urso muito fofinho e
ele adora mel
My cat Mimi has gray fur and she loves to play. - Minha gata tem pêlo cinza e
ela adora brincar.
• Em inglês, "it" ou "there" são usados para evitar orações sem sujeito.
Exemplos:
It is raining. - Está chovendo.
There is something wrong. - Tem/Há algo errado.

• I am the best. - (Eu) sou o/a melhor.
• You are beautiful. - Você é linda./Vocês são lindas.
• He lives in São Paulo. - Ele mora em São Paulo.
• She reminds me of my mother. - Ela me lembra minha mãe.
• "What's your car's colour?" "It is metallic blue." - "Qual a cor do seu carro?"
"(Ele) é azul metálico."
• We have been married for three years. - (Nós) estamos casados há três anos.
• They got divorced two months ago. - Eles se divorciaram há dois meses -
• The books have arrived. They are on the table. - Os livros chegaram. (Eles)
estão em cima da mesa.
1 - PRONOMES PESSOAIS
a) Pronomes Retos
It, ele ou ela, pronome neutro, refere-se geralmente a coisa. Pode também referir-se a
um bebê, quando não é indicado o sexo.
We, nós.
Ye, vós, o plural de thou, é forma absoleta em prosa. A forma usada é you, que
corresponde a vós, vocês, os senhores, as senhoras.
They, eles, elas, plural de he, she e it, refere-se a pessoas, animais e coisas.
OBSERVAÇÕES:
1ª) Os pronomes retos são também usados como complementos do verbo to be:
It is I, it is they.
b) Pronomes Oblíquos
As formas me, you (thee), him, her, it, us, you (ye), them são usadas:
2 - PRONOMES POSSESSIVOS
a) Os pronomes adjetivos my, thy, his, her, its, our, your, their e os pronomes
substantivos mine, thine, his, hers, its, ours, yours, theirs correspondem aos
pronomes pessoais:

II - Como pronomes enfáticos: He read the letter himself, ele próprio fez a caixa.
OBSERVAÇÕES:
1ª) Se a pessoa que fala dá a si mesma o tratamento de primeira pessoa do plural, usa
ourself e não ourselves.
4 - PRONOMES DEMONSTRATIVOS
a) Os demonstrativos:

I) Como pronomes adjetivos:

The former , aquele(s), aquela(s)
The latter , este(s), esta(s)
Yon, yond, yonder , aquele(s) lá, aquela(s) lá (ou acolá).
Ex.:
He told me so, ele me contou isso.
He himself says so, ele próprio o diz.
He never says such things, ele nunca diz tais coisas.
She is a child will be treated as such, ele é uma criança e será tratda como tal.
He wrote the same words three times, ele escreveu as mesmas palavras três vezes.
He would do the same , ele faria o mesmo.
Those are the ones he brought yesterday, queles são os que ele trouxe ontem.
Prof. Smith and Prof. Brown arrived yesterday, the former came from London, the
latter from New York, o Prof. Smith e o Prof. Brown chegaram ontem; aquele veio de
Londres e este, de Nova Iorque.
I see a few trees on yonder hill, vejo algumas árvores naquele monte lá.
OBSERVAÇÕES:
1ª) Com os verbos believe, crer, expect, hope, esperar, desejar, suppose, supor, think,
pensar, supor, be afraid, supor, lamentar, sentir muito, recear, é permissível o emprego
de so se desejamos evitar a repetição de uma observação ou pergunta:
Ex.: Will John come? I think so, João virá? Penso que sim.
5 - PRONOMES INTERROGATIVOS
• Who, quem
• What, que
• Which, qual.
- Who é declinável: nominativo who, possessio whose, de quem, e objetivo whom, que
(objeto direto ou indireto). Who refere-se à identidade: Who is he? Quem é ele?
- What refere-se a pessoas e coisas. Quando usado com referência a pessoas, indaga
sobre a posição social, a profissão, o caráter, etc.
- Who e Whom são pronomes substantivos: Who is that man? Quem é aquele
homem? Whom do you see at the window? Quem você vê à janela?
Whoever took the dictionary from the bookcase? Quem tirou o dicionário da
estante?
Whatever excuses did he offer? Que desculpas apresentou ele?
Whichever way did he go? Em que direção foi ele?
6 - PRONOMES RECÍPROCOS
Each other e one another, um ao outro, uns aos outros, usam-se para duas ou mais
pessoas ou coisas:
The two men looked at each other (ou one another), os dois homens olharam um para
o outro.
The people in the village all knew each other (ou one another), todas as pessoas na
vila conheciam-se umas às outras.
OBSERVAÇÕES:
1ª) Os pronomes each other e one another podem ser usados na forma possessiva: each
other's, one another's, um do outro, uns dos outros.
2ª) É freqüente o emprego de each other e one another com certos verbos em que há a
idéia de reciprocidade, como - kiss, fight, meet, etc.
7 - PRONOMES INDEFINIDOS
OBSERVAÇÕES:
Os indefinidos no e every são usados apenas como pronomes adjetivos e none, anybody,
anything, something, nobody, nothing, everybody e everything, apenas como
pronomes substantivos.
b) PRONOMES ADJETIVOS
8 - PRONOMES RELATIVOS
Who (que, o qual), which (que, o que, o qual), that (que), what (o que) são usados
como pronomes relativos.
a) WHO. Who, pronome sujeito, tem como antecedente pessoa:
Exemplos:
e) WHAT. O relativo what não tem antecedente expresso, não é um pronome conectivo
e significa - a(s) coisa(s) que, aquilo que: I didn't read what he wrote, não li o que ele
escreveu.
