microssegundos, subida e descida 2 segundos, tempo ON e OFF de 20 segundos,
protocolo.

Abstract
Introduction: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a technique by which
applies to electrical current to produce neuromuscular contractions, it has been
used as one of the pillars of the therapeutic modalities for gaining muscle strength.
Objective: to evaluate the muscle strength of elbow extensors in women after the
use of NMES low frequency. Materials and methods: 7 women were selected,
with normal body mass index (BMI), healthy, not physical activity practitioners,
aged 18 to 27 years. The survey was conducted in the therapeutic clinic of the
University of Guarulhos, for a period of 5 weeks. It was used the functional electrical
stimulation (FES) with the parameters of frequency at 50 Hz, pulse duration 200
micro-seconds, (cycle) of 50%, ascent and descent 2 seconds ON and OFF time of
20 seconds, for a total time of 20 minutes in the muscle belly of triceps brachii, with
enough intensity to provide visible and tolerable muscle contraction. The
measurement of force was made by using a portable Dynamometer before the
beginning of the NMES Protocol and in the end to evaluate possible strength gains.
Results: statistical analysis of the results was used paired Student's T test and
considered the significance level of p = 0.05. The results showed that there was an
increase in muscle strength in both arms 22%, being the average gain of in the not
stimulated elbow extensors and stimulated arm 5,5%, there was an statistically
significant. Conclusion: The FES was efficient in the strength gain of the triceps
brachii of volunteers who received the protocol.
Key words: Electric stimulation therapy, muscle strength, physical therapy
modalities.
Introdução
Segundo Faller (2009) a Estimulação Elétrica Neuromuscular
