It is understood that the bone tissue has a property that allows its
alteration due to a stress provoked by muscles or other forces; is when it occurs a
transformation. The orthodontic benefits a lot from this bone tissue transformation,
because every person in development presents a phase in which is possible to
reach the best orthodontic results with little effort and tissue and a better favorable
pragmatic. Such phase is easily detected by analysis of the skeletal maturation
through a hand and fist x-rays that help a lot in the prediction of the puberal
growth. It is known that very frequently the person's dental age does not match
with the chronological and skeletal age.Through the hand and fist x-rays, we can
recognize the person's skeletal age and take advantage of the best phase for the
orthodontic intervention. Besides this, it is important to mention that only one x-ray
in a child could show scars interruption in the growth, that could indicate the
presence of past diseases or other interruption and also reveal disturbances in the
skeletal development and, if it is the case, it would facilitate Investigation on when
and why such alterations occurred.
The objective of the present study is to show the stages of the human being
development through the hand and fist x-rays, using the literature as a base for
discussion. From the literary revision some anatomical accidents and relevant
structures are described, showing which changes are significant to determine the
phase of the puberal growth.

Para Bjórk e Helm (1967), o ser humano tem várias idades que se
referem a aspectos distintos de seu desenvolvimento e sua determinação esta
baseada em diferentes aspectos do desenvolvimento individual.
