RESUMO
ABSTRACT
The objective of this study is to carry out a review of the literature on the importance of
dental records and ethical and legal aspects regarding their elaboration, maintenance and
custody. The dental records can be described as a set of standardized, orderly and concise
documents for the registration of dental care provided to the client. The documentation is of
the client's right and the dental surgeon must keep a copy of all documentation in a safe
way. The consumer protection code states that the dentist should keep a copy of all
documentation for a period of 5 years, and it is advisable to perform scanning or
photocopying the models or even filming to eliminate the problem of the physical space in
the packaging and storage of the same . On the other hand, the obligation to repair damages
is supported by the Brazilian Civil Code that works with the perspective of limitation of the
obligation to repair within a maximum period of 10 years. It is concluded that dental
records are important documents for the recording of client information and allow the
monitoring of such information not only by the dental surgeon but also in human
identification and their custody time, if possible, should be "ad eternum ".
