Introduction
2005
WinGauge SPC-3 is a measurement software for the industrial environment, with a
large number of applications:
• 100% checking automatic systems interfaced with the logic of the production line
• stations for SPC control of the production process
• semi-automatic or manual control and selection stations
2005
WinGauge SPC-3 (named WinGauge for shortness in the followings) works with an
MG A90 hardware, that is, with PC interfaces duly customised and equipped with the
Windows (98/2000/XP) system. The operator’s interface has been conceived for the factory
operator and can be used directly through the keyboard and without the mouse.
Performances can be summarized as follows :
• Possibility of using the signals coming from the following units:
o MG LVDT/HBT transducers
o Measurement units and pre-amplified sensors with analog output
o MG TPE pneumatic electronic transducers.
o Universal instruments with RS-232 or Digimatic serial output
o Analog and digital encoders
o Microcontrol measure devices
• Data insertion from the keyboard
• Data acquisition from file ASCII.
• Management of conformity characteristics
• Help system on line.
• Multilanguage software.

• Armature Checking Introduction (page 123).
Installing
WinGauge is distributed by means of support disks or the web. Two procedures are
available for the setup:
• Complete setup: it installs components, on line help and the program
• Upgrade setup: it installs only the program and necessary new components; this
is the procedure you can download from the Mg web site.
You must not run backward upgrade to an older version (older than the existing one). If you
are installing WinGauge on a normal PC be sure all applications are closed before starting
setup; the setup procedure updates several system components; it is necessary to check
Windows registry integrity previously; MG is not responsable for problems due to an
installation of its software on systems with an incorrect configuration.
check box : these are boxes used to enable the options; change the value by means of the
space bar; when the little v-mark appears, the option has been enabled and when the box is
white the option is disabled.
F5 change tab: in the programming windows use F5 to change the active tab; with the mouse simply
click the desired tab.
To use the menu by means of the keyboard, follow one of the methods below:
• open and quit the menu by pressing ALT and select the pull-down menus by
means of the cursor horizontal keys and select the commands by means of the
cursor vertical keys
• each pull-down menu contains an underlined letter: press the key corresponding to
this letter to open a pull-down menu and do the same to select one of the
commands contained in the pull-down menu.
The final choice of the command is always carried out by pressing ENTER. With the
mouse, the menu can be opened moving onto it; quit by clicking outside the menu.
Control Bar
The control bar offers a number of functions for each WinGauge window; usually, these
functions correspond to the function keys F1 to F10. The control bar is always present in
the lower part of the screen. A control is disabled if its background is dark grey.
If a mouse is connected, the control can be selected by clicking on it.
Product configurations
At present, WinGauge is available in the following configurations:
SPC-3 this is a configuration oriented to the statistical process control. The use of I/O
Engine automation system allows MG to customize the measure work place logic and the
interface to the production line. A further possibility for this kind of configuration is using
correlation graph; for this kind of work places a connection to a local area network and to
the software Supervisor is recommended, to optimize control planning and organize data
collection.
SPC-3/Net : this is an enriched SPC-3 configuration, that is also able oriented to manage
the data definition and the result analysis of another measure work place connected to the
same local area network; it represents a valid alternative to using the Supervisor in case of
networks formed by two work places only.
SPC-3/Rotor: this is a special configuration for dimensional inspection of rotors,
particularly for shape errors on cupper commutator, stack lamination, shaft and polar wheel.
These are tipically semi-automatic application with motorized piece turning, fully controlled
by the software, but to carry out system with a 100% checking in production line is also
possible. A dinamic graph presentation of the measure allows the user a quick comprension
of tooling problems.
SPC-3/Glass : this is a special configuration for dimensional inspection of glasses,
tipically with many dimension and short cycle time; using I/O Engine automation system
allows MG to customize the measure work place logic and the interface to the production
line. Also for this kind of configuration the connection to the local area network and to the
Supervisor, is possible.
WinGauge objects
WinGauge is based on a number of objects which describe the real objects and entities used
by industrial metrology. These objects are contained in lists and stored on the data base.
The gauge is the object which describes the physical system used to collect measurements
and can be made up of more than one channel. There are different types of gauges: LVDT
amplifier, ORBIT sensor, analog, Mitutoyo Digimatic, etc…; the physical reading system
being equal, several gauges can be defined that take into consideration the different uses of
the gauge.
The Channel is the object which describes the physical input from which the measurement
is taken. The channel has different structures depending on the type of gauge to which it
belongs.
The part number describes the piece to be measured and all its characteristics, the
production process for manufacturing the piece and the statistical inspection plan related to
it. It can also be considered as the measurement programme for a special type of piece to be
checked.
A part number has at least one characteristic to be measured; tolerance limits and data
concerning its calculation modes are assigned to each characteristic.
Group: the characteristics assigned to a part number can be collected in different groups
according to the measurement sequence you want to obtain. The characteristics belonging
to the same group share the main statistical parameters.
Master: if the measurement technique is based on the comparison with a sample piece
whose characteristics are well-known, a master piece is used, that is, a number of certified
characteristics assigned to the characteristics of the part number to be measured.
The Lot contains the measurements collected. It is univocally connected to one single part
number. A statistical aim is defined in the lot (i.e. process analysis or R&R test) as well as
the control chart limits, if this is foreseen by the characteristics of the assigned part
number.
A user defines a WinGauge user’s profile by defining the system access level. According
to the access level assigned, each user can access to certain functions. There exist the
following user levels:
• MEASURE level: users belonging to this level can access to the basic
measurement functions only
• PROGRAMMING level : users belonging to this level can access to all
measurement functions; they can also modify the system programming.
• CONFIGURATION level : users belonging to this level can access to all
functions of the preceding level and can modify the preferences and the general
system set-ups and make backups.
• MG-OEM level: this level is reserved to the OEM of MG for special applications.
An Anomaly is a code which can be assigned to a measurement to detect causes of
rejection or any anomalous event related to the process under inspection..
An Intervention is a code which can be assigned to a measurement to detect special
actions or events that occurred during the process in progress.
An archive is a full data base of WinGauge which can be entered locally or through the
network; the management of data in different archives allows creating different operating
environments according to their particular use.
Report printing
When you launch a print, normaly you get an interactive print previw window. In this
window you can watch in advance the print result and work with the report using the

is automatically opened when the part code list is entered..
F8 Groups : to access the list of groups linked to the current part number.
F9 Characteristics : to access the list of characteristics linked to the current part number.
ENTER Edit : to access the part number general parameter window.
shift-F2 Lock : by means of these keys the CONFIG level user can lock or unlock the current code;
the symbol indicates the lock state and a locked code is also called master code.
shift-F10 Line up : the CONFIG level user can line up the parameters relative to the part numbers of
the same family with respect to the locked part number (see the Lock function). The family
to which the underlined master code belongs is considered and then a master code is
searched for this family: if this code exists, the following parameters of the characteristics
are copied into the remaining codes of the family:
• values of limit table
• reworkable limits
• measure unit
• precision
• measure and initial delay times
The line-up is allowed only for part numbers for which the Family field is not empty and
concerns all the characteristics with the same name.
DEL Delete: to delete the selected part numbers (to select or deselect a row, move the cursor to
the desired row and press the space bar); deletion is not possible for the prototype part
numbers and for those part numbers linked to lots; an interactive window will ask you to
confirm deletion for each selected code.
ESC Exit : exit to main menu.
Part number Name: the name univocally identifies the part number in the archive; it can
be made up of 15 characters max.
Revision type : it allows to choose the policy to be adopted for the assignment of the names
to the part number revisions. If the Automatic type is chosen (default), the name of
revisions is automatically assigned by the software, by using the current date and time upon
creating the revision. This policy assures the unambiguousness and consistency of the
names assigned to revisions, however it does not permit to give them meaningful names.
Whereas, if the Manual revision is chosen, every time a new revision of the part number is
required, the user is asked to insert the name he wants to assign to it. In this latter case, the
software assures the unambiguousness of the revision names by checking that a revision
having the same name does not exit for the current part number before saving the revision.
Part number Revision: name of the last revision of the part number
Description: description of the part number
Family: the similar part numbers can be grouped in families so that the line-up function
contained in the part number list can be used.
Procedure: to make a choice among existing procedures in the current archive. This
procedure can be shown by the user during the measure work, to get more infiormation
Display refresh: activate this option to display continuously the characteristic value during
the measuring cycle. In the case of dynamic measures, we suggest keeping this option
disabled to obtain the best performances.
Show previous group: if the code includes more than one group of characteristics, use this
option to keep the data of the preceding group displayed instead of displaying only those of
the current one; the value of this option cannot be modified for the preset codes.
Obligatory piece: this option defines the kind of check by piece (option enabled) or by
characteristic (option disabled); in the controls according to the characteristic, the passage
from a group to another depends on the information inserted in the measure sequence box
of the group definition window. This parameter can be defined only through the creation of
the part number and only if the configuration SPC-3 is active.
Piece Report Printing: this combo box, available only for obligatory piece part number,
allows to define the way of obtaining the printing of the piece report; it can assume the
following values:
• Manual: the report is printed at the end of each piece measuere only if the user
gives the print command using the key F6 from the Characteristics List page.
• Printer: the report is automatically printed at the end of the measure of each
piece.
• Excel: the report is automatically exported in Excel format at the end of each
piece measuere.
• Html: the report is automatically exported in Html format at the end of each piece
measuere.
Correction parameters
The feedback tab is visible only if the feedback option is enabled in configuration,
contains the correction parameters to be applied to the working machine with a retroactive
effect. Thanks to these parameters, we can define the logics the system uses to assign the
state of “dimension to be corrected” to a characteristic; all the dimensions having well
defined trend limits are then considered; the state of correction of a characteristic is
displayed during the measurement phase and then used to release an output towards the
working machine.
Correction reference: the value of the correction transferred through an output differs from
the measurement value and is calculated as a deviation from 3 possible references:
• Nominal value
• Tolerance centre
• Opposite trend limit
Correction method : a method to be adopted to decide if the “correction” state of a
characteristic must be activated
• Counters: The correction condition is reached when the counters combined with
the result of measurements achieve the values defined for them.
• Group average: The correction condition is reached when the average value of
the last measurement group exceeds the preset limits; This condition is assessed
every N measurements performed (with N equal to the indicated group
dimension).
• Moving average: this method is similar to the previous one but the average is
calculated on a moving sub-group of the last N acquired measures.
Forward Correction counter: this parameter is significant only if the counter correction
mode has been given. It shows the number of pieces with positive trend result, positive
derogation or positive reject after which it is necessary to enable correction. For each
characteristic defined in the programme, a counter is kept updated and increased at each
measurement with trend+, derog.+ or reject+ results; this counter is zeroed at each
measurement with a different result and every time the correction condition is activated.
Backward Correction counter: this parameter is significant only if the counter correction
mode has been given. It shows the number of pieces with negative trend result, negative
derogation or negative reject after which it is necessary to enable correction. For each
variable defined in the programme, a counter is kept updated and increased at each
measurement with trend-, derog.- or reject- results; this counter is zeroed at each
measurement with a different result and every time the correction condition is activated.
Group dimension : this parameter is significant only for the Average and moving
Average correction mode; it shows the number of pieces considered in the calculation of
the correction average value. Every time a correction condition is activated, the number of
current pieces inside the group is zeroed.
Number of buffer pieces : it shows the number of pieces between the working station and
the measurement station; after enabling a correction condition, countings of corrections
(regardless of the chosen mode) restart only after measuring as many pieces as indicated by
this parameter.
Group list
By pressing F8 in the part number list you can access the list of groups belonging to a part
number; for every group, the description and the type are highlighted. The following
operations can be carried out:
F2 New: create a new group. This function is not active in the rotor configuration nor if some
lots have already been assigned to the current codes. The systems asks whether the new
group is to be inserted before or after its current position in the list.
DEL Delete: to delete the selected groups (that is the rows with the active selection field); this
command is disabled if some lots have already been assigned to the current part number;
confirmation of deletion is asked. It is not possible to delete the only group of a part
number, or a group having at least one characteristic combined with it.
F6 Print: To print the group list.
F9 Characteristics: to access the list of characteristics related to the current part number.
ENTER Edit: to access the parameter definition phase of the selected group.
ESC Exit: to exit to the part number list without saving possible modifications made to the part
number. If some modifications have been made, the program asks for a confirmation.
F10 Save: to exit to the part number list saving possible modifications made to the part number,
without being asked for a confirmation. It is available only if some modifications have been
made to the current part number.
To add or delete any groups with already connected lots, use the function Revision from the
list of the Part numbers.

Graphic draft: in this field of the combo-box type you can select a graphic draft among
the ones of the MGDesign software; if no graphic draft is registered no access is possible to
the field; after the graphic draft has been selected, access to a new customized page is
possible: this page has the same name of the selected graphic draft
Measure message: it is possible to specify a brief message which will be displayed during
the measurement phase of the current group.
Measurement sequence
In the SPC-3 product configuration, if the option obligatory piece is not active in the
current part number, the box for defining the measure sequence is displayed to define the
rules for the reading order of the characteristics belonging to the group.
Group change: the value of this field can be automatic or manual and is followed by
another field containing the number of measures (sample) to be considered for the group
change; let’s consider different possibilities :
• Automatic : the operator passes to the following group after the foreseen sample is
completed.
• Manual with sample value 0 : the operator can decide with a soft-key when to
pass to another measuring group.
• Manual with sample value higher than 0 : it is possible to pass to another group
after completing the sample; the operator can select the next measuring group from
a list
Piece proximity: the channel of a gauge to be used as a sensor detecting the piece presence
can be selected in this box to start measuring the current group automatically. The threshold
Characteristic list
By pressing F9 in the code list, you can access the characteristic list belonging to a part
number; for each characteristic it will be displayed the name, the description, the belonging
groups, the master and the gauge used, the tolerance and the phase. Rows in italic mean that
the characteristic is of the auxiliary type
From the characteristic list the following operations can be carried out:
F2 New: to insert a new characteristic; the procedure asks if the new characteristic must be
inserted after or before the current one and if must be a variable characteristic or a
conformity characteristic.
DEL Delete: to delete the characteristics selected (that is the rows with the active selection
field); this command is disabled if some lots have already been assigned to the current part
number; confirmation of deletion is not asked. It is not possible to delete the only
characteristic of a part number.
Line-up: this function allows the line-up among different characteristic of values of some
common parameters. Characteristics to be lined up must be chosen from the list through a
multiple selection (that can be only a one element selection in simplest cases); the
characteristic that is highlighted when pressing F3 is the one giving default values, shown
in the line-up window.
These parameters are:
• zero limit
• limits table, reworkable limits
• reading time and initial delay
• characteristic type
• precision
Definition of characteristic
Press F2 (create a new characteristic) or ENTER (modify an existing characteristic) in the
characteristic list to access the insertion and modification window. It is composed of the
following tabs: General, Options, Cycle, Alarms, Dynamic, Classes. The number of
functions displayed depends on the active product configuration. These tabs are described
in the following paragraphs.
As you can see, if the characteristic uses a master, the option absolute measure is
negligible. If the formula contains a reference to another characteristic, the option absolute
measure allows to decide whether to use the absolute value or the deviation from the
nominal value of the characteristic.
• Bar to bar: the value of the characteristic corresponds to the maximum jump
among the ones examined near a slot detected with the slot filter.
• Max Phase/Min Phase: the value of the characteristic corresponds to the
maximum/minimum absolute value among all the phase differences of the cavities
detected with the slot filter on two curves; the first curve is combined with the
current characteristic while the other is shown in the curve correction pre-
elaboration; the phase value is returned along with a mark.
• Single value: it returns the spot value of one point of the dynamic curve; used in
applications where getting correlation graphs is needed.
• Minimum of maximums: it returns the smallest value among all the local
maximum points in a curve where a point exclusion filter (for example Y-Band
Filter) has created an alternation of useful zones and filtered zones. The minimum
value is not considered if it is the first or the last useful point in the curve.
• Maximum of minimums: similar to the previous operator, it returns the highest
value among all the local minimum points in a curve.
Further available fields in the dynamic tab :
Display Graphic Limits : allows to decide whether to display the curves representing the
tolerance limits of the characteristic.
Conformity Characteristics
In the case of conformity characteristics, only the general tab in a reduced format is
available; only the following parameters are available:
• Name
• Description
• Group
• Gauge: the value chosen for this field must be of Boolean type (for instance: GO-
NOGO) in order that the characteristic can be considered as a conformity one.
• Phase
Smoothing
The smoothing filter is a moving average filter used to eliminate noise and vibrations.
Define the % window parameter which is used to define the number of points considered in
processing the moving average; 2 parameters can also be defined by means of a check-box:
Slot Filter
Th Slot Filter allows detection of slots in grooved profiles with a typical rotor structure.
Define the following parameters: number of slots (number of slots of the piece), right
border and left border (section of the profile to be filtered on the right and left sides of the
detected slot axis), the moving threshold (it indicates the sensitivity used in recognising the
slot. The lower the value is, the higher the sensitivity is).
Peak detection
The Peak Detection filter allows filtering of curve sections having a displacement within a
given settable range; parameters are window % (width of the curve section taken into
consideration), threshold (displacement angle accepted) and step (percentage of scrolling
of the filtering window on the profile, relative to the width of the window itself).
Y-Band filter
To exclude all the points outside a threshold defined by the two thresholds; moreover, all
the points on the edges of the filtered areas are excluded only by means of the thresholds,
for a profile width corresponding to the percentage values indicated by parameters left
border and right border.
Trend correction
To correct linear trends overlapped to measures by performing the algebraic sum of the
curve to a straight line detected by the two Y1 and Y2 axis expressed in the measure unit of
the characteristic; these Y-axis detect the Y-axis of the straight line in moment 0 and
moment T corresponding to the end of the measuring time.
Butterworth
Digital filter in the frequency available in versions low pass, high pass and band pass of
fifth order; the cutting frequency expressed in Hz is defined and can be applied to
periodical signals only.
Chebyshev
Digital filter in the frequency available in versions low pass, high pass and band pass of
fifth order; the cutting frequency (expressed in Hertz) and the acceptable ripple (expressed
in dB) have to be defined; the recommended value for the ripple is 0,1dB, special cases
excepted; this filter can be applied to periodical signals only.
Harmonic
Digital filter that separates and adds each other N harmonics of the signal included between
the current values of order 1 and order 2 fields; the resulting curve can be shifted toward
left of a number of points depending on the value of the shift parameter (percentage of the
total number of points); this filter can be applied to periodical signals only.
Automatic combination
You have to use this mode when you want to apply more than one master characteristic to
more than one part number characteristic at the same time.
First you have to choose from the characteristic list the characteristics for which you want
to create a combination with a master (marking them with the check sign); then you have to
press the F9 Master key.
In order to enable this mode, you have to choose at least two characteristics; if you don’t
choose any, all the characteristics wiil be considered.
A window appears, that shows in the upper part the list of all the masters in the archives, in
the lower part the codes of the selected zeroing and verification masters (these fields are
blanked on entering the window) and another field called Combination type, that makes it
possible to choose the automatic combination type. The available types are:
• by characteristic name combination: each of the part number characteristics that
has been selected on entering this phase, is combined with a zeroing or
verification master but only if the master has one characteristic with same name
(no matter about letter case). If no matching master characteristic is found for a
certain characteristic, this will not have any master combined with.
• by progressive number combination: the first part number characteristic is
combined with the first master characteristic, the second one to the second one and
so on, until when there are selected characteristics and master characteristics. If
the selected part number characteristics are less than the master characteristics, the
last part number characteristics will not have any master combined with.
Manual combination
You have to use this mode when you want to apply one master characteristic to one part
number characteristic only.
First you have to choose from the characteristic list the characteristic for which you want to
create a combination with a master (marking it with the check sign); then you have to press
the F9 Master key.
In order to enable this mode, you mandatory have to choose one characteristic only.
A window appears, that shows in the upper part the list of all the masters in the archives, in
the lower part the codes of the selected zeroing and verification masters (these fields are
blanked on entering the window).
You can choose the master you want to combine with the characteristic selecting it from the
list; then you have to confirm the choice by pressing F4 (if you want to use it as a
verification master ) or F8 (if you want to use it as a zeroing master). You are asked to
decide which master characteristic combine with the selected part number characteristic.
You can verify the rightness of your selection checking the contents of the two info fields
displayed at the bottom of the window (the name of the selected master characteristic too is
displayed near the master code). You can choose the same master both as a zeroing and as a
verification master. The F2 key allows you to blank the fields related to the selected
masters. At any time, you can cancel all the modifications and go back to the characteristic
list by pressing ESC. If you, on the contrary, press F10, you make actual the combination
of part number and masters. If a master of a certain type is not defined, the selected part
number characteristic will have no combination for this type of master. This possibility can
also be useful to delete an existing combination.
Lot list
The PROG level user can access the lot list by entering the Programming menu, item
Lots. A list of all the existing lots is displayed; for each lot the following data are shown:
its state (see below), its statistical aim by means of an icon that shows the primary statistical
index for it calculated, its name, the name and the revision of the linked part number, the
statistical aim fully described, the counter of the measures that compose it, either as number
of pieces or as number of measures for each characteristic according to the part number type
(by piece or by characteristic), a graphical indicator of its usage level (green circle = lot
already containing measures; circle with centered 0 = lot already zeroed but not yet
containing measures; dark grey circle: = lot not yet used).
DEL Delete: deletion of the selected lots (rows with the active selection field); the lot can be
deleted if it is closed. If it is open and not active, the lot can be closed and then deleted.
ENTER Edit : to access the lot definition window.
ESC To go back to the active lots list. If in the current working session one or more lots have
been created and/or activated, this operation forces the update of the active lots list.

• Using lists (page 17).
Lot definition
Press F2 (create a new lot) or ENTER (modify an existing lot) in the lot list to access the
lot definition window. This window is composed of a General tab, a Statistical tab
(which is enabled if the lot statistical type is Process) an RR tab (which is enabled if the
statistical type of the lot is RR) and a Key tab.
The gauge channel reading page is made up in such a way that one can see for each channel
of the current phase (up to 8 eight per page) the following data, shown in adjacent columns:
• the name, the description and the physical input the channel is connected to.
• the reading expressed in the gauge measure unit; the reading is provided with a
“clock” indicator and a range indication (amplitude of a value from the last
command F7 or F9).
• if the gauge supports the zeroing, the possible value of the channel in its zeroing
point; this value is reset by using command F9.
• only for LVDT-type channels, the readings of the single probes A and B always
using the 2mm full scale.
Calibration procedure
The calibration procedure started by pressing command F5 in the gauge reading page is
used to acquire and save in the channel calibration table, the calibration parameters of the
expected points of the channel input/output characteristic.
This procedure is used as an alternative to direct writing of values in the channel calibration
table and can be used in the case of a fixed calibration, that is, if no drifts are detected on
the reading behaviour.
To perform this procedure you need all the gauges required (calibration samples, calibration
documents, reference reading gauges..). Calibration can also be used to line up transducer
reading or to obtain a higher accuracy in reading. It is necessary for gauges of the Ring-
TPE e Plug-TPE type.
Once the procedure has run, the following calibration window is displayed :
Press F10 to confirm calibration. If the gauge has more than one channel, the procedure is
repeated for each channel by using the same string.
In order to make sure that the gauge works correctly, calibration must be carried out for all
channels. To check if calibration is correct, go to the “gauge reading” function and try to
obtain measures close to the positive and negative full scale for all of the gauges.
We remind you that, if a Request command has been set for the gauge, this measure is
collected automatically as frequently as the delay set on the gauge. If, on the contrary, no
request has been set, the measure is collected only if a manual measure is entered from the
gauge.

• Serial type gauges (page 21).
All these pages share the same heading bar with the following information:
• Page title
• Lot Name
• Lot statistical aim
An information window is displayed under the heading bar and it includes the following
information:
• Part number
• Measure name and current Group Number
Group: to pass to the next zeroing group; this key is active only in the presence of several
zeroing groups.
Service : to pass to the service pages if at least one service group is available.
No. of rows : to change the active display mode: 12 or 20 or 60 rows (or characteristics).
Zero check : acquisition of the zero with repeatability compared to the master zero; if the
difference between the measured value and the last master zero is higher then the value
entered in the zero limit field of the option card of the characteristic, the new zero will not
be stored; this key is available only if one characteristic with a zero control limit different
from zero is available; it is not necessary for the characteristic to be referred to a master.
NOTE: this button remains disabled until the master zero has not been acquired for all the
characteristics of the group.
Zero master : it permits the PROG level user to acquire the master zero (fixed zero).
Gauges : to access the reading phase of the gauge for all the gauges used by the current
group characteristics.
Reset: it permits the PROG level user to cancel the zero master or the fixed zero.
Single char.: it allows to enter the maxi-figure display of the individual characteristic.
Besides the characteristic value, which is expressed in the unit measure programmed for it,
also the abbreviated name and the characteristic description, a thermometer-graphic
indicator useful to understand where the current reading is positioned compared to the
characteristic tolerance limits, are displayed. Moreover, the serial number of the master
used for zeroing, if any, and the value of the master characteristic are displayed. The
possible operations through the function keys (zeroing, zero reset) act only on the currently
displayed characteristic. Use keys PgUp and PgDn , to move in a cyclic way, to the
previous/next characteristic among those defined for the current zeroing group. From the
maxi-figure display you can return to the normal display by pressing key F10.
Page change: to display the 12 or 20 next rows (depending on the active display mode), if
any.
In normal display mode, if even only one characteristic of the group has not yet been
zeroed, the message “Still to be zeroed” appears in the page header together with the
relative icon. On the contrary, in maxi-figure display mode, this message appears if the
current characteristic has never been zeroed.
Zeroing on a gauge
Zeroing on a gauge is allowed only if no characteristics of the part number belong to a zero
group. All codes using a single gauge share the same zeroing executed during the gauge
reading step. Zeroing during the measuring phase is executed by going directly through
reading the gauges used in the code. The zeros resulting from this operation are valid for all
codes using this gauge.
Zero checking
The zero checking can be activated both on the number of measured pieces from the last
zero if you are working with part numbers by pieces, or on the time lapsed from the last
zero on the individual group if you are working with part numbers by characteristics. In the
tab Options of part numbers, now it is possible to decide if the zeroing control must be
requested in a Mandatory or Optional manner during measurement, through field Zero
Request Type.
If the zeroing inspection is defined as Mandatory, as soon as the conditions to carry it out
occur, a request for Required Zeroing is displayed in the form of a clear message and a
special icon is displayed on the upper side of the screen (in the box related to the gauge, if
measure is by characteristic, in the box related to the piece counter if measure is by piece) .
Measure is inhibited. Under this condition, the operator can enter only the zeroing phase
and carry out a new zero (with zero check) or a master zero. If measuring is by piece, the
zero must be acquired for all the expiring zero groups; if measure is by characteristic, just
acquire the zero on the groups associated to the characteristics belonging to the group to be
measured. If the part numbers provide for several zero groups, zeroing must be carried out
on all provided groups in order to be able to restart measurements.
In the vent of the Optional zeroing inspection, the request for Required Zeroing is
displayed all the same upon occurring the foreseen conditions, however other measurements
can be carried out. Zeroing or repeatability control is left at the operator’s discretion.
Check pages
The check pages permit measures to be carried out which are included in the check plan of the
object being measured. Measurements carried out in the check mode increase the system
statistics and are saved in the data base.
Group/Phase: to select the group or the phase depending on the programmed measure
sequence; if the option Obligatory Piece is not activated for the used part code, it is
Anomalies: it allows Anomalies and interventions input (if any) in the archive.
Keys: to insert a search key if it has been programmed in the configuration phase.
Measure execution
Key F10 is used to execute measure and can assume different meanings according to the
programming of the part number used:
Start : command used to start measuring.
Stop: the command used to stop measuring is available only if the current group has not
any characteristics for which it is foreseen a reading time that is different from zero.
Valid data: in the groups with the continuous measure option, command START is not
available and command STOP adopts the meaning of VALID DATA.
After starting measure on a phase having at least a serial gauge without request, a window
asking the operator to press the key for sending gauge data is displayed; this window
remains active until when a serial message is displayed or key F10 is pressed (deleting
acquisition). The characteristics using serial gauges without request automatically stop once
the measure is acquired (unless a time-measure is set).
Measure deletion
Use key DEL to the measure just carried out; there are different possibilities according to
the part number used:
• In checks by piece, when the piece measure has not been completed, a window
asking the operator whether he wants to delete the dimensions acquired on the last
phase or all the dimensions acquired on the piece, is displayed; moreover, several
phases can be deleted backwards by pressing key DEL several times; if the
measure of the piece is over and DEL is pressed, the program will ask the operator
whether all the piece or only the last phase must be deleted; however, in this case,
the previous phases cannot be deleted except by deleting all the piece.
• in checks by characteristic, it is always active and causes the deletion of all
measures belonging to the last group or to the last phase according to the
measuring sequence
Sample menagement
If the current part number has the option obligatory piece disabled, it is possible to define
in the group, in the programming environment, the number of piece composing the sample,
that the operator has to check at measure time. In this way che checking process will be
automatically stopped once reached the number of set measures; the operator will only be
able to escape from the measure page or to change the current group or phase (automatically
or manually according to programming).
If the operator decides to exit from the measure phase or to change the active group/phase
before having completed a sample, he is prompted by means of a warning message that
gives to him the following options:
Invalid measures
At the end of the measure in the information box the message "Invalid measure" could
appear, with one of the following causes:
• the value of one of the characteristics is out of the defined validity limits
• a pre-elaboration step is failed on a characteristic
The aim of a not valid measure is to avoid mixing statistics with complitly wrong and
meaningless measures; tipically the operator wil repeat the measure.
An invalid measure is saved in the data base but does not affect counters and statistics. If
the part number is structured with more groups and phases, the invalid measure is managed
as follows:
Measure By piece: the measure goes on normally till the end o(last phase of the last group),
even if the result is already set to “Not Valid”. At the end of the measure the piece result
will be “Not Valid” and no counter (nor the piece counter, neither the characteristic
counters) is encreased.
Measure by characteristic: when a phase is finished with a result “Not Valid”, Wingauge
does not move the cursor on the next phase or group (even if the automatic group/phase
change is active). In this way the operator can solve the problem and check again the piece.
Only counters of invalid characteristics are not encreased, so the operator can understand
how many measures are missing to complete the sample. As a consequence of this, if a
characteristic is “Not Valid” and other are valid in the same phase, their counters are not
aligned.

Characteristics list
In the Characteristics list All the characteristics which belong to the check groups are
displayed in this page: the available display modes are the following:
12-value mode: to display at the same time max. 12 characteristics; for each characteristic
the following information are displayed:
• name: characteristic name and description
• symbol : characteristic graphic symbol (if any), on the contrary generic symbol. If
for the characteristic a control chart is defined, the chart type related to the
characteristic is displayed in a tooltip when the mouse is moved onto the symbol;
moreover, on clicking on the symbol, the control chart page relative to the
characteristic is automatically displayed. If there is an alarm active on a chart, an
icon the indicates to which chart the alarm is relative and its seriousness (yellow
background = warning, red icon = serious alarm) is displayed at the place of the
symbol.
• reading : current reading value with graphic indicator and measure unit
20-value mode: to display at the same time max. 20 characteristics; for each characteristic
the name, the description, the value with graphic indicator and measure unit, the result, the
number of rejects or the class of the last measure, are shown.
60-value mode : to display at the same time max. 60 characteristics, arranged on 3 columns
including 20 characteristics each; for each characteristic the abbreviated name, the short
name, the value, the measure unit, the graphic indicator of the measure and a short code
related to the result, are shown; by moving on the name of the characteristic with the mouse,
a tooltip containing the extended description of the characteristic itself is displayed .
120-value mode: to display at the same time max. 120 characteristics, arranged on 6
columns including 20 characteristics each; for each characteristic the abbreviated name, the
value expressed in the unit measure and accuracy stated for the characteristic in the
programming phase and a short code related to the result, are shown; by moving on the
name of the characteristic with the mouse, a tooltip containing the extended description of
the characteristic itself is displayed .
The key F5 Rows # permits to pass from a display mode to another one.
Graphic draft
If the check group is connected to a graphic draft, a further page with the name and the
characteristics of the graphic draft provided for, will be available during the measuring
phase; inside this page, the use of WinGauge is the same as the one described for the page
of the characteristics list, excepting that only the characteristics inserted in the graphic draft
and having a customised graphic format, are displayed.
Dynamic analysis
All the characteristics belonging to the check groups for which the dynamic analysis has
been programmed are displayed in this page; particulary you get a "Dynamic analysis" page

Process potentiality: the aim of the capability report is to calculate the Pp and PpK process
capability indexes
Machine: the aim of the capability report is to calculate the Cm and CmK machine
capability indexes.
Gauge: the aim of the capability report is to calculate the check tool capability index;
indexes Cg and CgK along with their percentage values %R and %A&R are calculated
keeping count of the accurancy error (displacement between the true value of the
characteristic, that is the value of the linked master characteristic and the measure average);
indexes are calculated by supposing that dispersion of measures covers an interval equal to
15% of the tolerance range as a maximum
R&R: the aim of the capability report is to execute a repeatability (EV) and reproducibility
(AV) study by calculating the RR parameter.

Histogram of results
The window containing the histogram of results allows to obtain a study of the measure
results for each characteristic; it can be entered only for the check characteristics having the
field of the type of characteristic at the normal or normal without sending value.
The histogram is calculated on all the measures collected within the characteristic validity
limits; if a value different from zero in the Histogram measures field of the Group has
been set, the histogram will be calculated by using only the last measures, in the same
quantity as the the preset value.
Besides the histogram a list of statistical parameters is displayed. This list is identical to that
one shown in the Statistic histogram page.
The following special function key is available:
Passage to the following characteristic provided with a histogram.
XR and XS charts
The window of the control chart is displayed for the lots with a process statistical study
and for the characteristics whose control chart has been enabled..
The following graphs and information are displayed:
• X chart: chart indicating the average sample value
• R chart or S chart: chart of sample range
Each sample is normally represented on charts by means of a green circle, unless one of the
alarm conditions defined for the characteristic is active: in this case the circle is red
coloured.
On the lower right side, the abstracted data of the displayed control chart are displayed:
these data include the sample number, the Cp and Cpk values (if they can be calculated),
the average X, average R or average S and Sigma hat values.
page up/down It displays the box with the current sample data and allows to scroll forwards (PageUp)
or backwards (PageDown) from one sample to the next one. When you go beyond the first
or the last sample, the histogram of the measures is shown again.
Other subjects:
• Anomalies and interventions input (page 81).
• Control chart (page 98).
• Calculation of limits (page 100).
Service pages
The service pages permit all those measures to be carried out which are not included in the
check plan of the object being measured but useful for using the measure equipment.
Measurements carried out in the service mode do not increase the system statistics and are
not saved (except for special cases) in the data base. To use service pages you need to
define al least one characteristic in a service group.
The typical applications of the service pages are the following:
• Measure display for sensor setting
• measures for guided tooling
• automatic positioning cycles
Except for this application in the service mode, all the other functions of the system are
available, including time measures, dynamic measures and the I/O Manager. The results of
each single characteristic are calculated only for a temporary use and are not included in the
statistics. The same function keys as of the check pages are available, except for one single
difference:
F4 Control: to pass to the control pages.
Service draft
This page can be entered if the service group is connected to a graphic draft; refer to the
considerations made for the graphic draft in the check pages.
Sensor diagnostic
The sensor diagnostic system, useable for LVDT inputs (connected to MG and
Microcontrol amplifiers), digital LVDT sensors and TPE devices (plugs and rings) allows
to give evidence of connection anomalies or sensor faults.
Activating the sensor diagnostic you avoid the possibility to collect untrue good measures,
due to a sensor giving a null output caused by one of the above problems; the supposition on
which the sensor diagnostic works is that each single sensor in its home position (when
there is no part engaged in the measuring equipment), is far from the electric zero.
Between the end of measure cycle and the beginning of the next one, a background reading
of all the sensors involved in the active group is done; to pass the diagnostic check each
sensor must be at least once close to its home position; once a sensor is found OK the check
is not done again until the next cycle, before the beginning of the next measure. This type of
diagnostic check is done also entering a check page, when coming from a zeroing page.
If one or more sensors give a reading outside of the indicated tolerance thresholds referred
to the home position, the diagnostic standard way of working provides that the possibility to
get further measures is inihibited. In this situation, when a new START command is
recognized, a message informing the user about the discovered fault is displayed and also
the number of the first sensor found in anomaly status is shown.
Diagnostic for a specific gauge can be disabled putting zero into the Sensor diagnostic %
threshold field of the gauge itself.
It is also possible to modify the diagnostic standard way of working by means of devoted
digital inputs in order to:
• temporarily disable the diagnostic, avoiding the measure lockout.
• can carry on the measure even though a sensor error is detected. In this case, the
sensor error icon is displayed close to the message Measure running… and the
reading of all the channels in error is put to a value near to their full-scale.
Contact MG for further informations about these non-standard diagnostic mode.

Piece archive
The piece archive makes it possible to display and, where necessary, print all analytical
data relating to the measurement of each piece. The piece to be displayed is selected from a
list and several methods of selection and search can be applied to this list. The list can be
printed or a piece report can be displayed.
The data contained in this archive come only from the part numbers used for the piece
measures (therefore the obligatory piece option must be enabled).
Piece report
Press ENTER in the piece list to access the piece report; this report contains all data
concerning the piece, including all anomalies and interventions as well as all measures
concerning the check characteristics with tolerance, measure unit and result.
The following commands are available:
F5 tab: to pass from the general data tab to the characteristics tab.
F6 print: to print the data concerning the piece.
F7 Previous: to display the data concerning the previous piece in the piece list.
F8 Next: to display the data concerning the next piece in the piece list.
ESC Cancel: to quit the piece report screen and go back to the piece list.
Filtering lots
Thanks to this filtering window you can enter information to look for and/or select data
inside the whole lot list. All conditions must be true. The following filtering methods are
available:
• From part number – To part number : to limit the selection only to lots
belonging to a part-number subset; it is possible to enter the starting part only of a
part-number name; when you enter a part-number in the first field only, all the
following part-numbers in the alphabetical order are searched; when you enter a
part-number in the second field only, all the previous part-numbers in the
alphabetical order are searched .
• From lot – To lot : to limit the selection only to lots in compliance with the
current criterion; for the selection mode do in the same way as described for the
part number filter.
• Active : when checked only active lots are considered.
• Closed only : when checked only closed lots are considered.
• Not active : when checked only not active lots are considered.
• Last revision only : when checked only lots belonging to last revision part-
numbers are considered..
• Statistical study : the search is limited to lots with the specified Statistical study.
List of lots
In this list all the lots of the same type (process/machine or gauge study) following the
selection criteria eventually defined in the lot filter are shown; for each lot are displayed its
statistical aim by means of an icon that shows the primary statistical index for it calculated,
its name, the part number and part number revision to which it belongs, the counter of
measures that compose it, either as number of measured pieces or as number of measures
carried out for each characteristic (according to the part number type: by piece or by
characteristic), the date of the last measure in it contained. The SPACE key or a mouse
click select/deselect a single lot. A selected lot is marked with a check symbol.
In the low part of the page on the right there is a box showing the total number of lots in the
list and the rules specified to filter the list itself.
If the lot that is currently highlighted in the list collects “by piece” measures, in the right
part of the window the histogram of result of all pieces (good, reject, trend, etc...) and below
the graphic indicator of measure dispersion compared to the tolerance, for each
characteristic are shown. On the contrary, if the lot collects “by characteristic” measures the
right part of the window is fully filled by the graphic indicators of measure dispersion.
These are also completed by the total number of collected measures (eventualy completed
with the number of expected measures) and by the number of rejected measures, for each
characteristic. For each characteristic with a control chart associated a small circle is also
Filter of measures
In this window you can enter data to select which measures to consider, among them
belonging to the lots currently selected in the lots list. The following filtering methods are
available (more methods can be used at the same time with AND logic):
• From date - To date: the set of measures that will be considered is defined
entering in the window the initial and final date and time; it is possible to enter
only one of the two date (activating or not the related check box), in this way it is
also possible to filter all the measures starting from the initial date till a specific
date or from a specific date till the final one.
• Result: only measures that have given the specified result are considered; possible
result are: good only, reject only, not reject only (good + trend + derogation).
• Operator: only measures done by the choosen operator are considered.
• Key field: this field, displaied only when lots that are currently selected in the
piece list, are based on a by-piece part-number, allows to consider only measures
related to pieces having the same key value. According to what defined in the
According to the composition of the selected measures set and the configuration options,
some items of the menu could be not available
Once the selection is done, in every case except for General statistic and Pareto diagram
items for which the elaboration is done for all the characteristics anyway, a list is shown
where you can choose the characteristics on which the selected elaboration must be
executed, among those that are not auxiliary and belonging to part numbers related to the
selected lots.
Saving modification
The modification save button (F10 key) is displayed only if you are working on a single lot
and some modification have been done in the current seesion (for example some measures
have been edited or some pieces have been deleted).
Choosing this function you save every modification and the new calculation of totals,
statistics and results of the current data set. Modification can not be saved if lot is locked by
another user; to lock a lot it is necessary to enter the statistic or the measure environment on
that lot. When a lot is locked it is not possible to add measures to that lot at the same time
on another network node. If you modify a lot in the statistical envirnment, on the node
where it is eventually active, coming back to the main menu the active lot table is reloaded.
To go out with the ESC command from the statistical elaboration menu with the command
Save active means to give up all the modifications previously done. However a prompt
message is displayed.
General statistic
Chosing the elaboration General statistic you enter a page showing global statistical
parameters of the selected data set. In the upper part of this window the heading data are
shown: part number name and revision, date and time of the first and of the last measure in
the set, name of the selected lot and its statistical aim. If some filter is applied or a multiple
lot selection has been made, the writing Filter Active takes the place of the lot name.
Piece view
The Piece view elaboration is available only if the selected data set is related to “by piece”
part number, it gives access to a table where all the information related to pieces that are
contained in this data set are shown.
Measure view
The Measure view elaboration shows the table of measures related to the current data set.
There is a table for each selected characteristic.
In the window heading the current characteristic name and description are shown; for each
listed measure there are the following information:
• progressive number in the current data set
• date and time
• value (visible if the characteristic is of the variable type only)
• result
• statistical sample to which the measure belongs (visible if the characteristic has a
control chart enabled)
• operator who performed the measure
• possible inserted tracing keys
• possible inserted anomaly and/or intervention codes
• possible inserted event notification keys
If the current data set is related to a “by characteristic” part-number, it is possible to edit the
measure values; the result of the single characteristic is automatically calculated; the related
row in the table is gray highlighted.
Note: on entering the editing mode for a characteristic having degree and minutes measure
unit (°/’), the measure field is automatically presented in a decimal notation where the two
first digit after the comma correspond to minutes, and the second two digit correspond to
seconds. At the end of editing the value is automatically converted in the degree and
minutes notation (example: the edited value 89,5664 is shown as 89°57’04’’).
The following commands are available:
F6 Print: to get a report of the measures list.
Measures histogram
By choosing the page Histogram you will enter the analysis function of the distribution
with the displaying of the measures histogram, obtained by sorting the measures of the
first out-of-service characteristic of the chosen part number.
In the upper part of this window the heading data are displayed: the name of the part
number, the name of the lot or the measure selection period, the name of the characteristic
and its tolerance.
In the right box the main statistical indexes and the characteristic parameters are displayed,
if the characteristic has got defined them (for example, it is not displayed one of the two
tolerance limits if the characteristic is single-member or with a single limit) or if they can be
calculated. The displayed parameters are LTL (lower tolerance limit) UTL (upper tolerance
upper) and tolerance range (LTL-UTL). The indexes displayed are the Average, the Mode
(referred to the standard sorting), the sample sigma, the average ± 3 times the sample sigma,
the 6 sample sigma, the maximum value and the minimum value, the range, the skewness e
the Kurtosis, the upper and lower reject percentages, the cm and the cmk, the results (total,
good and rejects) of the measures of the displayed characteristic.
In the central box the measure histogram is drawn; the shape of the histogram depends on
the sorting rule used (that is on the number of classes and the initial measure of the first
class). The length of each bar is proportionate to the percentage of measures included in the
class, according to the scale of percentages shown in the lower part (two scales are
available: 0 to 100 or 0 to 50, automatically selected to make the graph clearer). In the
column on the left side of the bars, it is displayed the number of phases included in the
class, the percentage with respect of the total and the middle value of the class. In the upper
part of this column, the type of characteristic is displayed (bilateral or unilateral), whereas
in the lower part, the measure unit is displayed.
The colour of the histogram bar has the following meaning :
Statistical tests
To check the measure adjustment to a Gaussian distribution (or Normal) besides a visual
comparison with the corresponding Gaussian, it is possible to perform statistical tests to
check the Normality by pressing F2. Four different Normality tests are carried out :
• chi² test
• Epps Pulley test
• Kolmogorov Smirnov test
• Skewness and Kurtosis test
For each test, it is shown the result in the terms of “Normality” or “Non Normality”; these
tests can give different results and, if measures are numerous, they can take a few minutes
to be carried out.
Sorting measures
The division of measures into classes is quite arbitrary: data can be displayed in very
different ways by changing the sorting method; by pressing F5 it is possible to choose the
sorting method among the ones listed below; at the beginning it is automatically displayed
sorting within the tolerance; by pressing F5 several times, the different sorting modes are
scrolled; the current mode is displayed in the histogram title, the heading data are displayed
above.
Sorting within the tolerance : classes are calculated within the tolerance limits. Number of
classes nc is obtained from the total number of measures N through the following formula
nc = 1 + 10/3 x LogN. However, the max number of classes is 16, regardless of the number
of classes resulting from the above-mentioned formula. Width A of each class is A =
Tolerance / nc, and the initial value of first class is the value of the tolerance lower limit.
Standard sorting : classes are calculated between the max measure and the minimum one
(that is within the range). Number of classes nc is obtained from the total number of
measures N through the following formula nc = 1 + 10/3 x LogN. However, the max
number of classes is 16, regardless of the number of classes resulting from the above-
mentioned formula. Width A of each class is A = Range / nc, and the initial value of first
calss is the minimum value xmin measure. The standard sorting is the one used to calculate
the mode and, even though with special changes, to carry out the normality chi² test.
The layout and the functions available in this page are similar to those already described in
the section Histogram of all measures..
Control chart
In this page the control chart set for the selected characteristic is displayed (if a control
chart has been set).
On the left, the control charts along with the control limits set at present are displayed; the
control charts may include up to 25 samples; the broken horizontal line along the chart
shows the average value.
Should more than 25 samples be present, it is possible to scroll them by moving the window
of the samples displayed on the chart through commands PgUp / PgDn, by moving the
current sample backward and forward. The current sample is the one shown by the vertical
line crossing the chart. The data of the current sample are displayed in the left box .
Process alarms
Process alarms are deduced according to the control limits, the advisement limits if they
have been set, the average value of all samples (in the case of X chart, it is the average of
the sample averages, in the case of R or S charts, it is the average of Ranges or Sigmas of
each sample). The possible alarm codes are the following:
• L : outside the upper limit alarm. The sample has a value that is higher than the
upper control limit.
• l : outside the lower limit alarm. The sample has a value that is lower than the
lower control limit.
• R : upper run limit. The sample is the seventh consecutive one having a value that
is higher than the total average of the chart.
• r : lower run alarm. The sample is the seventh consecutive one having a value that
is lower than the total average of the chart.
• T : upper trend alarm. The sample is the seventh consecutive one having a value
which is increasing compared to the previous sample.
Calculation of limits
The calculation of limits of the control chart can be performed by using command F5 : this
function is very important as it permits to modify the control limit values of the chart
shown, both by calculating them again according to the SPC control rules SPC both by
setting them directly.
It is displayed a box divided into 4 columns that have the following meaning:
• Current data: it contains the current control limits for the characteristic.
• Calculated: it contains the recalculated limits, based on the selected measures.
• Extended: it contains, for the X chart only, the extended recalculated limits. This
calculation is made by considering the variability among samples besides the
variability within the sample.
• New: it gives the chance to set the new limits for the characteristic. These fields
are automatically filled with the values of the calculated limits on entering the
page.
The number of the last samples to be used for the recalculation of limits, along with the
possibility of using all of them for the recalculation, can be set by using the special list.
Only when a mouse is available, to specify a Cpo value different than 1 is possible, to be
used as a target value to calcuklate control limits; the recalculation of actual limits is forced
double clicking on the Cpo field.
When a mouse is available, double clicking on a field of one of the columns on the left
(Actual, calculated, extended data) you get the copy of the related values in the
corresponding field of the column New. In the same way, double clicking on the heading of
one of the columns on the left you get the copy of all the related fields in the corresponding
fields of the columns New. Moreover, also the limits set at present are shown.
If you want to carry out the automatic recalculation of the limits, follow the instructions
below:
• Define the new limits for each characteristic and confirm with the key F10.
Repeat this step for each character having a control chart, using keys F7/F8 to
move among the characteristics.
• Go out from the control chart window.
• Go out from the statistical elaboration menu; the creation of a new lot inheriting
all the characteristics of the current one is proposed, ma con i limiti modificati:
confermare con il tasto F10.
Pareto diagram
In this page it is displayed a Pareto diagram to compare the critical levels of the different
characteristics composing the part number. The Pareto diagram shows the relative impact of
some problems, to select the few important elements from the most ones that are not:
usually 80% of the problems are due to 20% of the causes.
The diagram shows a bar for each characteristic: the length of the bar is a percentage value
from 0 to 10 and shows the problematic level of the characteristic on causing rejected pieces
compared to the other. Besides each bar it is displayed the name of the characteristic it is
referred to along with the number of rejected measures compared to the total. If there is
enough room, it is also displayed the characteristic tolerance and the bar value. This value
is also written above the bar. The diagram also contains a cumulative line with the value
corresponding to each class. This line is based on the cumulative percentages of the
characteristics displayed.
In the page of the Pareto diagram, the following further commands are available:
F4 Empty classes: to choose if the bars corresponding to characteristics without any reject
Capability analisys
The capability report window includes a table listing all the statistical quantities for each
important characteristic for the capability study as defined in the lot definition phase in the
statistical aim field. For each characteristic, the measures made, the average, the range, the
sigma are displayed; the capability indexes depend on the statistical study, so the
following cases are possible:
• process: the capability report is target-oriented to the calculation of the Cp and
CpK process capability indexes
• process capability: the capability report is target-oriented to the calculation of the
Pp and PpK process capability indexes
• machine: the capability report is target-oriented to the calculation of the Cm and
CmK machine capability indexes
• gauge: the capability report is target-oriented to the calculation of the checking
equipement capability indexes Cg and Cgk.
• R&R: the capability report is target-oriented to the execution of a repeatability
and reproducibility study with the calculation of the RR parameter.
The page of capability report contains also the following commands:
F3 Measures : to enter the measure view.
F6 Print : to get a report of the capability analysys.
F8 Excel : this function, that is visible only when the data export option is enabled in the
product configuration, allow you to export in Excel format the capability analysis table; the
path and file name corresponding to the export destaination are requested. .
ESC Cancel : to go back to the statistical elaboration menu.
Custom reports
This function, available in the statistical elaboration menu only when you have some
custom reports, allow you to use a specific report, different from any standard report of
Wingauge. Activating this elaboration after choosing the characteristics, you enter the
preview of the first avaiable customized report. The report can be consulted and/or printed
according to usual report usage mode. If you get more than one customized report, a field
appears low on the left, to choose from a list the current report. The command F9 Update
enables the loading of the new report.
Introduction to backup
As magnetic media on which data are stored may damage, for safety reasons it is always
recommended that you copy your own data. This kind of copy, called backup, will be used
to restore data in case of problems.
Copy of data is carried out both in compressed mode; the space occupied by backup is
smaller by approximately 50%, however the data recovery operation can only be performed
by using the WinGauge function; on the other hand you can also backup your data copying
database-files, one per each configured archive, directly from operative system; this
operation is recommended only to experienced personnel.
To perform a backup on a different destination from those defaut, it is possibile to create
personalized backup paths in configuration phase.
The transfer operation allows partial transfer of data (codes, lots, gauges, etc…) from and
to different archives or backup.
See also:

Data transfer
Each WinGauge installation includes part numbers combined with characteristics, groups,
gauges and masters. Measures executed for each part number are collected in lots and
anomalies, interventions and keys can also be present. All of these data constitute a database
or archive.
At the transfer function start, a page divided into two main boxes is displayed:
• in the box on the left the data of the current archive are displayed
• in the box on the right, the archive or the backup which have been selected by
pressing the command F2 are displayed
Data are displayed in the shape of a tree to highlight its hierarchical structure; the tree can
be scrolled by using vertical arrows and each branch can be expanded by using horizontal
arrows; the main branches represent WinGauge objects: part numbers, gauges, master
pieces, lots, anomalies interventions.
To select an item to be transferred, first highlight it and then press the SPACE key; by
selecting the title of a main branch all the objects which belong to that branch will be
transferred. To reverse the transfer direction use command F3.
The following function keys are available:
F2 Archive : to select the archive displayed in the right box; the list of all the backup positions
and the archives set in the configuration is displayed, as well as the “new backup” option
through which a new backup can be created.
Part number
If the destination archive does not contain any part number with the same name, the
selected part number is transfered without any modification, otherwise the procedure
follows the logic described in the table.
Introduction to configuration
Select the item configuration in the options menu to access the system configuration so
that the CONF level user can define some general parameters. This phase is available only
in English language.
On saving the configurations with F10, all the modified options will be enabled.
Some options are available in the WinGauge options menu:
mouse : to enable the mouse icon display
setup mode : to enable the setup mode; once this mode is activated, the main parameters
can be modified (values in the table of limits, type of limits, control chart, measure unit,
nominal value, dimension of the sample) during programming without creating a revision of
the part number and new active lots. Statistical processings must be considered
meaningless; this mode must be used only during implementation and commissioning. This
setting remains stored inside the single session of WinGauge and it is usually disabled
Keys configuration
In the Keys tab it is possible to define different kind of keys:
Lot tracing : in this area it is possible to define up to 8 keys that can be used on the part
numbers. In order to make a key available, its name and its maximum length (between 1 and
20 chars) must be set. For each defined key one of the following types must be selected:
• Disabled : key not useable
• Tracing : key useable for information tracing
• Event : key useable for event notification
Piece tracing : this field gives the chance to define the name to give to the piece selection
key available in the statistic analysis selection form. The default name for this key is
Registration Number; it is used when the field is left empty.
Characteristic : in this area it is possible to define up to 8 terms available in the key field
of the option tab in the characteristic definition menu.
Event on alarm: it allows to determine the behaviour of the program following the raising
of an alarm on the control charts: if this field is set to the value None, a possible alarm is
only signalled; if this field is set to the value Save Anomalies Interventions, the
Anomalies/Intervention request display is automatically shown every time an alarm occurs
on one or more characteristic at sample completion.
Serial number reading mode: to define the way the serial number will be requested on a
part number where the registration number request is mandatory. The available options are :
• Keyboard : it is the default. The key request screenful with an additional field for
requesting the registration number to be absolutely filled in, will be displayed.
• COM 1/2 : the registration number is requested by sending character ‘S’ to port
COM1 or COM2 with the following parameters : BaudRate 9600, DataBits 8, no
parity, 1 Stop bit, no checks. After sending the request character, WinGauge reads
data from the serial for 200 ms, all data arriving in this lapse of time will be
considered as concerning the registration number.
• Digital Input: the registration number is drawn from opportunely encoded digital
input lines.
Language tab
In the tab Language you can choose the current WinGauge and help current language;
languages provided are:
• Italian
• International English
• German
• French
• Brasilian Portuguese
• Spanish
• Polish
• Romanian
For the Polish and Romanian languages, to obtain a correct display of special characters
using the corresponding Windows operating system is necessary or a multilanguage version
with the correct setup in the control panel.
Peripheral problems
Before inquiring why a peripheral fails to work, check that it is connected in the correct
manner.
The program does not print
• check that the peripheral is on
• check that the drivers have been installed
• check if other programmes (notepad, for example) print correctly.
The mouse does not work
• check that the mouse option in the option menu has been enabled
• check that the mouse has not been connected with the machine already in
operation; if so, switch off the machine and then switch it on.
Error reading MG amplifier

Archives maintenance
To assure good performances and the best reliability of the system, a routine periodical
maintenance of the data-base is required; therefore, the functions described here below are
available.
Clean up
This function is used to delete all the lots and part numbers that are not required any more;
especially all the closed lots and all the part numbers with last revision; as an option, the
user is given the possibility of deleting all the not active lots besides the closed lots.
After making the selections, the definite deletion of lots and part numbers is carried out
according to the given instructions; this operation may takes a few minutes. At the end of
the operation, a message showing the number of deleted lots and part numbers, is displayed.
Error messages
Run-time errors
Run-time errors can depend on 3 different causes :
• environmental causes or hardware problems (due to power supply or
ventilation)
• instability of the operating system (which is usually related to the following
installation of several applications)
• WinGauge internal problems
In the case of run-time errors, we suggest restarting the system.
Sometimes, a forced shutdown is required. If this is the case, when the pc is switched on,
the scandisk utility will start a disk check.
Programming notes
In this section we describe the main procedures to be followed for the most common
programming operations.
Starting WinGauge, in the main menu a function key F5 is available to quickly enter the
programming phase.
In this page besides the normal part-number data you can define further parameters, to
program graphic draft, vertical piece adjusting and rotation speed setup.
Further parameters are:
Measure Unità: dimensional measure unit used for all the characteristcs in the control plan.
Sample Dimension: number of measures belonging to the statistical sample, inside a
possible control chart.
Characteristics table
Pressing F5 you enter the tab containing the table of the characteristics considered in the
rotor control plan. The field control plan allows to choose from a list the type of control
plan to use, among those provided by MG; i.e. it could be possible to choose between a
commutator only control plan and a complete control with commutator, stack and shaft. If
the gauge MIT-SJ-201 (Mitutoyo profilometer) exists in the archive, as many
roughnesscharacteristics as the channels defined in the gauge (max. 4 channels) are shown
at the end of the list for the selected control plan. Names of these characteristics are RRA,
RRY, RRZ, RRQ each corresponding to a specific roughnesscalculation method suppoeted
by the profilometer.
In the table you can define for each characteristic the following data:
Configuration parameters
In the SPC-3/rotor configuration a particular tab is available in the configuration menu
(option / preferences), only visible to a configuration level user, containing the following
fields:
Pulley diameter: Primitive diameter of the motor pulley in mm; an incorrect value can
cause a failure of the measure algorithms; round down if needed.
Max rotation speed: it’s the maximum turning speed of the motor pulley, it is defined as
the speed obtained in correspondence to 5V full scale of reference analogic output; an
incorrect value can cause a failure of the measure algorithms; round down if needed.
Ruler: to disable ruler type gauges used for horizontal adjusting of measure blocks, in a
manual equipement.
Vertical probe: to disable vertical probes menagement, used to line up the piece on V
shoulders, in a manual equipement.
Gauges
According to the system configuration and used sensors, different kind of gauges can be
available; each owns some channels and every channel has a calibration table determining
the electronic gain.
Normally you do not need to modify gauges parameters, which is better done only on MG
personnel indication; for documentation purpose only here are data of the more frequently
used gauges.

Attention: when using extension cables you must modify calibration data for all analogic
type gauges using MG-DGT interface.
Analysis of diagrams
Once executed the measure the graphs of the dynamic analysis window supply a powerful
tool of profile analysis; for analyzing graphs keep in mind the following considerations:
• The parts of the profile filtered by WinGauge are grey, the ones not are green
Cartesian diagram
The Cartesian diagram offers a representation of the profile during the measure time; the
legend helps to understand the graph:
• Scale : graph full scale meant as the height of the vertical axis
• Max, min : maximum and minimum values represented on graph by two yellow
circular spots
• med : medium value of all not filtered readings
• Readings: number of readings in the shown profile and total number of readings
acquired during the measure time
• Slot number: slot number found.
Polar diagram
The polar diagram offers a profile view on a 360° rotation, where the starting point for time
and angles corresponds to the quadrant indicated as I, on the upper right; the graph
orientation is anticlockwise.
Diagnostic
In the legend of the dynamic analysis window, an error message appears if the filter
algorithm fails; these errors are shown in the dynamic graph legend and cause a not valid
piece measure; you should always check the correct definition of armature parameters.
• Not enough slots (a): check the position of the measure sensor and how much it
falls in the slot; check the parameters that influence the turning speed; adjust in the
edge filter the moving threshold.
• Wrong setup: caused by a turning speed too high.
• Not enough slots (b): indicating the “slot number error” that is a failed slot
tooling; this error is due to a bar width comparison: bars width must not be
different more than the 50% each other (only for standard rotors).
Quick retooling
Switching from one part number to another in the active lot list is very eased by the quick
retooling; when you get in the measuring phase after a lot change you access the service
scheme page with the gauge picture, with 6 graphic indicators, one for each the foreseen
adjustments; for adjusting the fixture for the new item execute one by one the adjustments
moving the indicators in the mean positions i.e. when they become green.
It is advisable proceed as follows:
• Reach the active lot list by ESC and select the requested lot and code; type F10
for accessing the service scheme window
• Adjust the vertical position of the V journals.
• Adjust the longitudinal position of the V stands
• Adjust the longitudinal position of the mease stand
• Position the piece on the V journals (or the available master) and adjust the
measure flexure position after lowering the turning assembly.
• Move to the checking page by F4
Diameter zeroing
The diameter zeroing procedure is indispensable for obtaining a correct diameter measure;
in the flat commutator case, if required, instead of diameter is commutator position to be
zeroed.
• Position the master on the gauge
• From the measure page reach the zeroing one by F2
• Type F3 for reaching the commutator zeroing group
• Acquire the zero master by F7
Average around
Another possibility for performances tuning, available for all characteristics measuring a bar
to bar or using maximum and minimum, is the function average around, defined in the
dynamic tab of the characteristic.
Increase these values to enlarge the considered zone around the maximum and minimum
points and obtain better system repeatability; suggested values are between 0.2% and 1%;
these parameters are available in the dynamic tab of every characteristic measuring a bar-
to-bar and using maximum and minimum values
Phase checking
The WinGauge software associated with the manual gauge by MG, is able to execute the
angular phase checking between stack and commutator slots.
This check is based on a sophisticated calculation system, which locates the position of slot
axis positions and calculates the maximum and minimum phase value.
Mechanical conditions to execute the measure are:
• The gauge must have a configuration with stack and commutator probes
• Mechanical line-up of the above probes must be accurate
MG can also supply certified reference pieces (master) with known phase errors.
Programming
At the programming level two farther characteristics are provided for the maximum phase
and minimum phase, among all phase measures done between stack and commutator
corresponding slots.
The nominal value field in the characteristic definition menu must be defined d as follows:
Measuring
The procedure to calculate phase when nominal value is different from zero, is the
following one:
• For each couple of stack and commutator corresponding slots, an angular phase is
calculated with the same sign of the nominal value, according to the sign
convention described above.
• The maximum value among all these angles is taken as the measure of the
characteristic with the dynamic operator equal to phase max
• The minimum value among all these angles is taken as the measure of the
characteristic with the dynamic operator equal to phase min
The procedure to calculate phase when nominal value is zero, is the same as the previous
one except that the phase for each couple of stack and commutator corresponding slots, is
calculated as the angular distance between slots, either when they are in advance (positive
angles) or when they are in delay (negative angles).
Automatic systems
Automatic applications are characterized by the following elements:
• No fast retooling function; normally the retooling group has a number of
characteristics equal to the number of transducers
• Communication protocol with the tooling machine PLC, realized according to
specification; this protocol allows synchronization between the machine and the
measuring system and transfers measure results; in specific applications is also
possible using tool correction functions available in WinGauge.
• Reduced measure times
