Remember: The Portuguese subject pronoun is not normally expressed in Portuguese but is indicated in the verb ending. However, use the subject pronoun with the verb if there could be any ambiguity or for emphasis:
- Onde est ele? - Onde est ela? - Eu que trabalho aqui , no ele. Where is he? Where is she? I am the one who works here, not him. (It is I who works here, not he (him.)

Note: ele / ela will also translate the neuter it and eles / elas the plural neuter they:

Where is the book? It is on the table. Where is the pen? It is in my pocket. Where are the books? They are on the table. Where are the pens? They are in y pocket.

Nevertheless, the personal pronouns would always be omitted in these last examples.

Chamar-se
As you have learned in Lesson 1, we usually use the reflexive verb chamar-se (call oneself) to ask about a persons name:

is used when speaking of a temporary state or condition, action, and place. The book is on the table. He is ill / sick. Im sleepy. Im happy today.

Questions
To ask a question in Portuguese, we simply give a rising intonation at the end of the question to what otherwise would be a statement: Voc est triste hoje? Ele est em Paris? Ela americana? Are you sad today? Is he in Paris? Is she American?

Note:

When the sentence begins with an interrogative pronoun or adverb, the subject pronoun usually comes after the verb or is left out altogether: Example: Onde trabalha voc? O que faz ele agora? Onde moras tu? Que disse voc? Porque ests ( tu) atrasado? Where do you work? What does he do now (these days) ? Where do you live/reside? What did you say? Why are you late?

Negative
To make a negation in Portuguese, just use no before the verbal form: Voc no est triste hoje. Ele no est em Paris. Ela no americana. . Youre not sad today. He is not in Paris. She is not American.

permanent location.

indicates an inherent or essential characteristic, state, condition, quality or indicates a temporary state, condition, quality or location.

Yes / No replies in Portuguese


In a Yes reply, the main verb of the question tends to be repeated, in Portuguese, in the appropriate person. The word Sim may precede or follow the reiteration, and sometimes is omitted: A: B:
O hospital fica longe daqui? Sim, fica. Fica, sim. Fica Is the hospital far from here? Yes, it is. Sure it is. It is.

In a no reply, there is a tendency to add the verb in the negative: A: B:

Desculpe can be used to apologize or to draw someones attention or to precede a request:


- Desculpe! - Im sorry! (bumping into someone by accident)

- Desculpe, mas (voc) no pode entrar aqui. - Sorry, but you cant come in here. - Desculpe, pode dizer-me que horas so? - Excuse me, can you tell me the time, please?

To ask a question in Portuguese, we simply give a rising intonation at the end of the question to what would otherwise be a statement.

To make a negation in Portuguese, just use no before the verbal form: Affirmative
