Apresentao
No
para cada instrumento;
combinar instrumentos e naipes, criar texturas sonoras e
manipular colorao timbrstica.
Desta forma, a Instrumentao e a Escrita Sinfnica esto interligados. Diferentes
aspectos tcnicos relacionados s possibilidades acsticas e
materiais dos instrumentos
aspectos subjetivos relacionados interpretao da orquestra como
instrumento nico.
No
prximo volume ele apresenta a Orchestrao Prpriamente Dita (Orchestration
seo A EVOLUO DA ORQUESTRA. Vincula-se a este tema a evoluo dos

INSTRUMENTAO
CONHECIMENTO DAS CARACTERSTICAS E UTILIZAO DOS
INSTRUMENTOS ACSTICOS
As
o ponto culminante deste estudo.

Intrumentos e propor Exerccios. O uso do hipertexto facilita o estudo e a consulta, pois
Cordas, Sopros,Percusso e Complementar. A voz humana a famlia instrumental mais
antiga. As trs famlias centrais so tradicionalmente vinculadas a orquestra e j eram
ambiguidade dependendo do autor consultado.
MIDI.
Estas tabelas so uma
conjuntos pertencentes Msica Popular, pois DELAMONT e DE ULIERTE ampliam a

A Orquestra
As
(primeiros e segundos violinos, violas, violoncelos e contrabaixos), flautas, obos, clarinetes, fagotes,
trompas, clarins, timbales e, s vezes, trombones. Nas orquestras modernas incluem-se, tambm, os
instrumentos seguintes: corne-ingls, clarinete baixo, contrafagote, tuba, harpa, caixa clara, bombo,
pratos, tringulo, castanholas, carrilho tant e xilofone; s vezes, as cordas so consideravelmente
primeiros violinos, soprano; segundos violinos, contralto; violas, tenor; violoncelos, bartonos; e
contrabaixos, baixo.
castanholas, carrilho, xilofone e tant.

outros so brilhantes, tpidos e poderosos.
particularmente a trinados e trechos rpidos.
orquestra. O obo um instrumento de palheta dupla. Alguns de seus sons so fracos e outros so
Seus sons mdios e altos no so
O clarim no freqentemente
A caixa clara
As

tuba, bartone e piano.

STRINGS CORDAS
There are three ways to set a string in motion: bow, pluck and strum.
The violin family and harp are string instruments. Violin, viola, cello and double bass can be bowed,
plucked and strummed. The harp is plucked.
The guitar is plucked and strummed. The guitar is a string instrument. In this reference you will
find it in the rhythm section.
The piano is a percussion instrument. Piano strings are hit to make them sing. Instruments which
are hit are percussion instruments. In this reference you will find the piano in the rhythm section.
violin

double bass
Non transposing instrument.
Concert pitch is an octave lower than written.
Scored in bass clef. The parts are extracted to bass clef.
Double bass is most effective (and required) as support to the higher violin family members. It can
play high though usually at the expense of the section. Keep bass in bass register.
Double bass strings are tuned up in 4ths. While the other violin member's strings are tuned up in
5ths.
harp
Non transposing instrument.
Scored in treble and bass clefs.
The parts are extracted to treble and bass clefs.
G is depicted as the highest note. G# is possible on some double action pedal harps.
The harp is tuned to the key of Cb. Seven pedals match the 7 letters of the alphabet. The pedal
(letter) may be positioned high (flat), middle (natural) or low (sharp). Pedal changes can be quick,
while the harpist is playing strings other than strings altering. Excessive chromaticism at fast tempo
is impossible.

INTRODUCTION TO
STRING INSTRUMENTS: TECHNICAL ASPECTS
Introduction
Articulation and Timbral Quality: the Bow
Movement of the Bow
Articulation
The Beginning of a Note
The End of a Note
End + Beginning: The Separation of Notes
Introduction
The strings wonderfully versatile instruments. They are perfectly at home with smooth melodic
lines, light figuration, brilliant passage work, and martial vigor.
Orchestras employ four different string instrument types: violin, viola, cello, and double-bass. For
our purposes, they are essentially different versions of the same instrument. Each is enormously
flexible, in terms of pitch, dynamics, tone quality, and articulation. However, to harness this
capability, the composer must have an understanding of string players' complex technique.
In the orchestra, string instruments play in groups. Each group plays the same part. (At least,
that's the default arrangement. See the section on divisi.) In a full-sized orchestra like the New
York Philharmonic or the London Symphony Orchestra, the number of players in each section will be
approximately:
First violins:
Second Violins:
Violas:
Cellos:
Double-basses:
16 players
14 players
12 players
10 players
8 players
These numbers often differ by one or two players, varying with the preferences and resources the
orchestra. Performances of music written before about 1830 often employ more substantially
reduced forces, for example a reduction by 50% or 75% of each of the sections. Many 20th-Century
works use this reduced ensemble, often called a chamber orchestra.
Articulation and Timbral Quality: the Bow
Forward and Backward Movement of the Bow
The performer makes sound comes from his instrument by using the bow. The primary motion of
the bow is forward and backward. With the aid of dried tree sap, the bow slightly grabs the string as
it is drawn across. This produces a constant agitation of the string and causes it to vibrate.
22
Up-bow is the forward movement of the bow. Down-bow is the backward movement. A stroke is a
single movement in one direction or the other. (It is also called simply a bow.)
When a string part contains the symbol
indicated by the symbol
The slur indicates that notes are to be taken in a single stroke. Any notes that are not connected
with a slur are executed with an immediate change of bow direction.
String players usually don't use their entire bow for individual notes. That is, individual notes are
usually produced by dragging only a fraction of the bow across the strings. For example, at quarter
note = 60, a quarter note might be played using a fifth of the bow, and an eighth note a tenth of the
bow. However, a string player may gladly use the whole bow for a group of quarter notes.
Articulation
Here, I'll define articulation as the combination of (1) the particular character of the beginning of
a note, and (2) the particular character of the end. Each method of articulation has its unique
character. This character depends on: (a) whether the bow remains on the string, and (b) how abrupt
all the movements are.
The Beginning of a Note
There are four common ways of beginning a note:
1. With the bow already on the string, starting and continuing it at a constant speed. This
produces a beginning with no change in dynamics. Because the string is abruptly grabbed by
the bow and shifted in position, there is a percussive click at the beginning.
2. With the bow already on the string, gradually increasing the speed from total stillness to
regular speed. There is an initial depression in the sound that quickly swells to the normal
dynamic. There is no percussive click.
3. With the bow initially off the string, abruptly placing it onto the string. This produces an
initial bulge in sound which almost instantly recedes to the normal dynamic. There is a very
prominent click and some other random sounds.
4. With the bow initially off the string, gradually placing it onto the string. This produces an
initial depression in both dynamic and tonal intensity, which slowly increases to the normal
sound. There is no click.
The End of a Note
There are three common ways of ending notes:
1. Abruptly stopping the bow. This stops the sound immediately and produces a slight click.
2. Gradually but quickly stopping the bow. This creates a depression in the sound, with no
click.
3. Removing the bow from the string. This allows the string to resonate freely. If the string
is thick, such as the violin's G-string, the resonance can be strong, being audible for about
a second. If it is thin, such as the E-string on the violin, the resonance might be for a
quarter of a second. There is never a click.
End + Beginning: The Separation of Notes
The separation of two notes is comprised of an end of a note, and then a beginning. Separations
retain the character of these component actions. However, since they are executed so quickly, they
achieve a particular, new character of their own. Many of these actions have specific names that
reflect these characters.
When actually executed in a passage, these separations occur in groups. Though these actions are
described as separations, almost all of them start with the beginning listed as coming after the
ending, which is listed first. Thus a group of notes taken spiccato (see below) will begin with the bow
bouncing downward.
The most common methods of separating notes are:
1. Placing the fingers down or lifting them up, while the bow continues in the same direction. This results in a
true legato. Notes executed legato sound as if they are separated by the syllable "n," while notes
23
separated by a quick change of bow sound more like "d" or "k." Because legato consists of continuing the
stroke in the same direction, legato notes are connected by a slur, with the end of the slur signifying a
change of stroke. (See the section on slurs.)
2. Reversing the stroke (combination of ending 1 and beginning 1). This creates a series of instantaneous
clicks, which gives notes solid definition. This method is called dtach ("detached") by string players.
This, aside from legato, is the most common method of separating notes. Dtach is indicated by leaving
the notes free of slurs or staccato markings.
3. Slowing the bow down, reversing the stroke, and then gradually increasing the speed (combination of
ending 2 and beginning 2). This avoids the click of the above stroke, which is useful in gentle melodies. It
creates a clear depression in the dynamics at the separation point, and both the end of the first note and
the beginning of the second are difficult to pinpoint. This is usually executed at the front of the bow, the
lightness of that area minimizing the click (see below). Unfortunately, this common and useful bowing has
no name.
4. Pausing slightly, then continuing the stroke in the same direction (combination of ending 2 and beginning
2). Depending on the size of the pause, the notes may be distinctly separated, or may merge into one
another. The latter is more common, because of its expressive vocal effect. This stroke is called lour and
also portato. Lour is indicated by slurring a group of notes over which tenuto marks are placed.
5. Fully halting the bow and pausing, then reversing the stroke (combination of ending 1 and beginning 1).
Produces strong separation between notes, as the stationary bow fully dampens the string. When this is
executed at a moderate speed, its simply called staccato. But when executed more quickly and loudly, it is
called martel. This latter stroke has a somewhat different sound, being sheen and intense. Because the
bow moves so quickly, it can last for at most only .5 seconds. Martel can be notated two ways: 1) staccato
dots under each note head, marked forte, or 2) arrowheads under each note head.
24
6. Lifting the bow from the strings, reversing the stroke, then dropping it back on abruptly (combination of
ending 3 and beginning 3). Executed repeatedly at its typical tempo, this amounts to the bow bouncing
from the string. This is called spiccato by string players. The word sec will secure a percussive, noisy
spiccato.
7. Lifting the bow from the strings, then dropping it back on, having continued the original stroke's direction
(combination of ending 3 and beginning 3). Similar to the above bowing, but with less of a click. The
resulting sound is somewhat fluffy. This is also called spiccato, although for purposes of clarity it can be
called slurred spiccato.
If the bow is bounced particularly quickly, it may be bounced upon the string by the player. This more
percussive bowing is called jet or ricochet. Because the front of the bow bounces easily (see below), that
is the part used for this bowing.
8. Changing strings in the midst of a stroke (combination of ending 3 and beginning 4). Creates a distinctive
fluffy separation between notes, slower than separation no. 6. Minimizing the clumsiness of these string
crossings is something that string players work on from an early age. Strings may be crossed very rapidly;
one type of bowing utilizes this and employs a different string for every note. This effect is called
arpeggiando.
Remember that all of these articulations are executed in a fraction of a second: the individual,
component actions are scarcely intelligible.
Tone Quality and Dynamics
Front, Middle, and Back of the Bow
25
The bow is divided into three sections: front, middle, and back. All have distinct characteristics,
because these sections weigh down upon the string in varying amounts.
This is because the bow, hand, and string act as a lever. In short, the whole thing acts like a
seesaw, but one in which the length of the board is constantly changing.
The back of the bow pushes into the string, the furthest end pushing down considerably. This
gives notes a heavy, somewhat gravely sound. As with all sections of the bow, the back may be
employed for a fraction of a single note, for an entire note, or for an entire passage.
The front of the bow is light, so much so that it tends to bounce off of the string. Notes have a
light and articulate sound when the front of the bow is used.
The middle is a balance of the characteristics of the back and front. It produces a sound that is
sturdy, but articulate. Most playing employs this section of the bow.
The effect of the different parts of the bow on dynamics is not absolute: it is fairly easy to play
loudly with the front of the bow, and softly with the back. However, the timbral difference is fairly
rigid: the front will always sound light, and the back will always sound heavy. Watch some string
players and notice the difference in sound between the front, middle, and back of the bow.
In most cases, string players use the back of the bow for more emphasized notes, and the front
for less emphasized notes:
a. In the great majority of cases, the back of the bow is used when a heavy sound is wanted.
b. The front of the bow is used when a light sound is wanted.
Usually, a down-bow will begin at the back of the bow, and an up-bow at the front of the bow.
String players therefore usually use a down-bow for emphasized notes, and an up-bow for less
emphasized notes. The first beat of a measure, for example, is somewhat more often played with a
down-bow than with an up-bow. Up-bows are somewhat more frequently used for the up beats.
Sometimes the extreme ends of the bow are necessary to produce the desired sound. When the
very back of the bow needs to be used, write au tallone. When the tip needs to be used, write punta
darco.
Dynamics
String players have several ways of altering the loudness of their instruments. The two most
important of these are 1) the pressure of the bow against the string, and 2) the speed of the bow.
Pressure: Quite simply, more pressure makes more sound and less pressure makes less sound.
Pressure also affects timbre: more pressure will create a more forceful, rough tone, and less
pressure will create a more light tone.
Speed: A quick bow stroke is louder and a slow one is quieter. The speed of the bow also affects
timbre: a quick bow will create a more polished sound while a slow bow will create a more dry,
scratchy sound.
Placement of the bow along the length of the string also affects dynamics. If the bow is close to
the bridge, the dynamic level will be somewhat increased. If the bow is far from the bridge, the
dynamic levels will be somewhat decreased. See the sections on sul ponticello and sul tasto.
The tilt of the bow also affects timbre and dynamics. If the bow is level to the strings, most of
the hair will contact the strings and friction is increased. This increases the dynamic level and makes
the sound more scratchy. If the bow is tilted, fewer hairs will contact the strings and friction is
decreased. This decreases the dynamic level and makes the sound more smooth.
Adjusting Pitch: the Fingerboard
The length of the finger board is used to change the pitch of the instrument. This is done by
changing the length of string that vibrates: the longer the length, the lower the note; the shorter
the length, the higher the note. The fingers change the amount by pressing the string onto the
fingerboard at specific places: the closer the finger is to the bridge, the higher the pitch; the
further from the bridge, the lower the note.
Stopped and Open Strings
A string that is pressed onto the fingerboard is called a stopped string.
When a string is stopped, vibrato, portamento, or artificial harmonics may be applied to it.
If the fingers do not touch the string, the fundamental pitch will sound. A string in such a state is
26
portamento.
Vibrato
Vibrato makes the sound burnished and refined than it would otherwise be. It also adds some
intensity. Performers vary the frequency, speed, and prominence of vibrato according to their
individual taste and according to the needs of the phrase. In general, too little vibrato and the tone
sounds dead, too much and it sounds grotesque. However, its safe to say that orchestral string
players generally use vibrato on all notes longer than a quarter note at quarter note = 60.
Almost all aspects of practicing vibrato are left to the performer, and so most of the above
information is of only incidental value during composition. However the composer can create a subtle
feeling of stillness and austerity by specifying when vibrato is not used. This is done by writing non
vibrato. The normal way of playing is indicated by naturale, modo ordinario, or m.o.
Miscellaneous Techniques and Devices
Multiple Stops
A multiple stop is the simultaneous playing on more than one string. This results in more than one
note. In an orchestra, multiple stops effectively multiplies the size of the string section. There are
three types of multiple stops:
Double Stop: playing on two strings, resulting in two notes.
Triple Stop: playing on three strings, resulting in three notes.
Quadruple Stop: playing on four strings, resulting in four notes.
The bridge is round, resembling a semi-circle, but the bow cannot curve around it. Double stops are
not problematic, but triple and quadruple stops require pressure to force the bow hairs to bend. They
are therefore confined to loud passages. Since the hairs don't curve entirely, the player also must
27
shift strings quickly. This arpeggiation is somewhat obscured in orchestral playing, but in music that
requires a clean sound, triple and quadruple stops can sound sloppy.
Pizzicato
Pizzicato is the plucking of a string by a finger. The sound is soft but abrupt, and dies away
quickly.
Pizzicato most often done by the index finger of the right hand, while holding the bow. For longer
passages, the bow is rested on the music stand.
If the fingernails release the string, a louder, harsher sound results. This is called fingernail
pizzicato.
If the strings rebound against the fingerboard, a percussive sound results. This is called snap
pizzicato, a sometimes Bartk pizzicato.
The left-hand fingers also can pluck the strings. One finger stops the string while another plucks
it. The sound is considerably less sonorous than normal playing.
Repeated Down-Bow and Up-Bow
Repeated down-bows have a somewhat savage sound, as it is always performed at the back of the
bow. The separation between notes is, at a fast tempo, longer than the actual note values. This device
is often seen in successive multiple stops executed f or ff.
The repeated up-bow has a quite light sound, as it is always performed at the front of the bow. It
too has a long separation between notes.
Bowed Tremolo
This is a continuous repetition of a single note, executed at considerable speed. The bow remains
on the string and moves back and forth as quickly as possible, the notes remaining without rhythm.
Because the clicks (discussed in the sections on beginning and ending notes ) are so frequent, this is a
somewhat noisy effect. Most importantly, it has a solid sound; more solid than is the normal bowed
note.
Executed softly, the tremolo has a hazy sound full of tension. At a loud dynamic, it is strong and
somewhat raucous.
It's usually called tremolo, rather than bowed tremolo, but it can be useful to distinguish between
the fingered tremolo.
There is another type of action similar to the tremolo, involving the rhythmic repetition of a single
note. This action increases the activity of a note or passage which might be too static. This is a more
common technique than tremolo proper, and is usually used throughout a phrase on all the notes.
Fingered Tremolo
This is a rapid alternation of two notes -- the tremolo as other types of instruments practice it.
The alternation is so fast that it is not metrical. When an entire string section plays the fingered
28
tremolo, the sound is shimmering and ephemeral. Its sound differs from the bowed tremolo by a less
solid, more flowing and mercurial sound.
Fingered tremolo is usually used in groups, for example a triad with a neighbor tone is sounded.
Glissando
The prominent slide of pitch is called glissando. A finger simply slides from one position to
another. Because it is so much more obvious than portamento, it is used to emphasize certain notes,
rather than to add to the flexibility and expression of a passage.
Glissando is indicated by a straight line between the two notes.
Harmonics
Harmonics are pitches that result from a peculiar behavior of the strings. They have a small,
vibrato-less sound, very useful in sustained tones for producing an atmosphere of tense stillness.
They can reach considerably higher than normal pitches.
Harmonics are produced by lightly placing a finger on the string.
As you may have guessed, this is a complex subject, so I've given them a section of their own.
Mutes
A mute is a device that dampens the vibrations of the string. They give the instruments a veiled,
mysterious sound. This is most prevalent in bright sounds, such as the I and II strings. On the I
string especially it has a sweet, breathy sound. Therefore, the violins and violas will be most used as
muted sounds.
On the darker sounds, such as the lower positions of the III and IV strings, it deadens the tone,
making it more opulent and pure, sounding more like the human "oh."
At f, the muted tone is strained in a sort of glassy way.
Mutes are slid onto the bridge when in use; otherwise, they remain about an inch behind the
bridge.
Col Legno
Col legno is the use of the wood of the bow to contact the strings. The hair does not touch the
strings.
29
Dividing a string section reduces its volume of sound and gives it a thinner timbre. This reduced
sound can be very desirable in subdued passages. In such cases, the passage is usually played by half
of the section.
Solo Instruments
The single string instrument, playing without the rest of the section, has characteristics all its
own. Most importantly, it is a more intimate sound; the timbre is also more sheen and opulent.
Multiple solo instruments playing a full chord can be a very rich sound.
