A / An - um, uma (no tem plural)


Usamos geralmente o indefinite article (artigo indefinido) a acompanhar um nome no singular
para nos referirmos a uma pessoa, animal ou coisa pela primeira vez.
Ex: There is a woman at the door.

O indefinite article (a/an) no pode aparecer antes de nomes que no podem ser contados:
o Relativos a certas substncias alcohol, wine, water, perfume;
o Relativos a certos alimentos butter, milk, fruit, sugar, rice, bread;
o Relativos a determinados materiais: metal, gold, silver, smoke;
o Relativos a certas atividades: ballet, gymnastics, athletics, dance, housework, cleaning;
o Relativos a qualidades humanas: courage, honesty, freedom, luck;
o Outras palavras como: attention, botany, electricity.

O indefinite article (a/an) utiliza-se frequentemente:


o Em expresses que designam quantidade, frequncia, velocidade;
Ex: a pair of jeans, a few minutes, twice a month, 50 miles an hour.

o Para falar de profisses;


Ex: a nurse, a secretary, a dentist, an actor, an engineer.

Regras colocao indefinite article(a/an)


O indefinite article a deve colocar-se:
o Antes de palavras iniciadas por consoante
Ex: a tv, a student, a bicycle, a window, a year.

o Antes de palavras iniciadas por h aspirado


Ex: a hotel, a hand, a house.

o Antes de palavas iniciadas por eu e u (quando o u se l como you)


Ex: a eucalyptus, a european car, a university, a unit, a union, a uniform.

O indefinite article an deve colocar-se:


o Antes de palavras iniciadas por vogal (a, e, i, o ,u)
Ex: an actor, an egg, an iceberg.

o Antes de palavras iniciadas por h mudo


Ex: an hour, an honest man, an heir.
