Additional pronunciation exercise (Faixa 34)

There was a beautiful young blonde at a soda machine in Vegas, and she
arrived there just before a business man coming to quench his thirst.

She opened her purse and put in 50 cents, studied the machine a short
while, pushed a Diet Coke selection, and out came a Diet Coke. She placed it on a
counter next to the machine.

Then she reached in her purse again and pulled out a dollar and inserted it
in the machine. Studying the machine carefully, she pushed the button for Coke
Classic and out came a Coke Classic and 50 cents change.

She immediately took the 50 cents and put it in the machine, studied it for
a moment and pushed the Mountain Dew button. Out came a Mountain Dew.
She placed them both on the counter next to the Diet Coke.

As she was reaching into her purse again, the business man, who'd been
waiting patiently for several minutes by then, spoke up. "Excuse me, miss, but are
you done yet?"

She looked at him and indignantly asked, "Well Duh! Can't you see I'm still
winning?"

BNUS: Melhorando a pronncia em ingls

Muitos estudantes de ingls me escrevem e perguntam como podem

melhorar sua pronncia em ingls. Ao longo dos anos fui desenvolvendo
algumas tcnicas e macetes que me ajudam a incorporar a pronncia de palavras
novas e sedimentar as que me apresentam mais dificuldade. Vou compartilhar
algumas dessas tcnicas e dicas neste captulo.

Elemento chave para se ter uma tima pronncia: ouvir! Ouvir, ouvir e
ouvir mais um pouco! Agora, deixe-me explicar como voc pode aproveitar seu
tempo de audio. Uma das coisas que eu aprendi foi que quando ouvimos algo
que est muito fora do nosso nvel, perdemos tempo. Por exemplo, se somos
iniciantes, perda de um tempo precioso sentarmos na frente da TV e ver
noticirios da CNN ou assistir um filme sem legendas. Comece com algo mais
simples, como podcasts ou at mesmo o udio do livro didtico com o qual voc
estuda. E no se contente em estar mais ou menos bom, seja excelente, oua
analiticamente, desafie-se na pronncia de cada som!

Estude e aprenda os smbolos fonticos. Sabe nos dicionrios aqueles

smbolos que vm entre parnteses e que parecem outra lngua? Ento, so esses
smbolos que interessante voc aprender para poder usar seu dicionrio
(impresso ou online) com mais eficcia. Geralmente, os dicionrios trazem
exemplos de palavras que contm o som de cada smbolo e com prtica voc vai
dominar a leitura desses smbolos, ver em qual slaba recai a entonao etc.

Imite! Lembre-se de que o ingls no o portugus com outras palavras e

sua entonao tambm no igual. Embora parea ridculo para voc falar com a
mesma entonao de um nativo, s assim que voc vai conseguir a to
sonhada fluncia na fala e vai melhorar sua pronncia. Comece devagar, oua

alguns podcasts bsicos ou at mesmo a outros materiais de ingls que voc tem
disponveis.

Sempre digo que falar outra lngua como ir academia no primeiro dia.
Voc chega em casa todo dolorido pois fez movimentos com alguns msculos
que no tinha feito ainda, ento at que esses msculos se acostumem a tais
movimentos pode demorar um pouco. O mesmo acontece com os msculos do
seu rosto e com sua lngua, que vo se aventurar a fazer sons que nunca fizeram,
mas que, com prtica, chegamos a resultados muito bons.

Para fechar, lembre-se de que aperfeioar sua pronncia requer prtica e

muita pacincia. Se possvel, trabalhe com um professor para lhe ajudar na
correo. No se contente em estar bom, chegue excelncia e faa a diferena!
