RESUMO
ABSTRACT
The neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) uses the electric current to promote
stimulation at the motor level, generating muscular contraction. Currently, NMES is widely
used in the ICU for the prevention and maintenance of muscle strength in critically ill patients.
Methodology: This study is a systematic literature review based on PRISMA guideline. The
search was limited to articles written in English, Portuguese and Spanish published between
the years 2010 to 2017, in the following databases: MedLine / PubMed, LILACS, SciElo and
PEDro, using the descriptors: "electric stimulation", "physiotherapy "" Intensive care unit "and"
randomized controlled trials ". Results: Seven clinical trials were included. From the articles
analyzed, 6 indicated significant beneficial results regarding neuromuscular electrical
stimulation in patients hospitalized in uti. Conclusion: AEENM provides a beneficial response,
mainly in the improvement in peripheral and respiratory muscle strength, functionality or
thickness of muscle layer loss, in patients admitted to an intensive care unit
