Used to

CAN é usado para dizer se alguma coisa é possível ou se alguém tem a habilidade
para fazer alguma coisa.
We can see the lake from our bedroom. -Nós podemos ver o lago da janela do
nosso quarto.
Can you speak any foreign languages? - Você pode falar alguma língua
estrangeira?
COULD é usado para dizer que alguém tinha uma habilidade ou permissão para fazer
alguma coisa. Às vezes é o passado de can.
My grandfather could speak five languages.- Meu avô podia falar cinco línguas.
She spoke in a very low voice, but I could understand what she said.- Ela falou
numa voz muito baixa, mas eu podia entender o que ela dizia.
We were completaly free. We could do what we wanted. - Nós éramos
completamente livres. Nós podíamos fazer o que quiséssemos.
MUST é usado para dizermos alguma coisa que nós temos certeza de que é
verdadeira.
You’ve been travelling all day. You must be tired.- Você viajou o dia todo. Você
deve estar cansado.
Linda must get very bored in her job. She does the same thing every day.- Linda
deve ficar muito chateada em seu emprego. Ela faz a mesma coisa o dia todo.
MAY e MIGHT são usados para dizermos se alguma coisa é possível e para falarmos
sobre ações e acontecimentos possíveis no futuro.
If you want, I‘ll go with you. (Se você quiser, eu vou com você.)
If you tell her anything, we‘ll say it’s a lie. (Se você falar algo para ela, nós diremos que
é mentira.)
If he studies, he‘s going to pass. (Se ele estudar, ela vai passar.)
If you don’t leave, I‘m going to call the police. (Se você não sair, eu vou chamar a
polícia.)
He’ll pass if he studies.
We’ll tell mom if you don’t help us.
If it rains, we‘re going to stay home. [Se chover, a gente vai ficar em casa.]
If you phone me when you arrive, I‘ll pick you up. [Se você me ligar quando chegar, eu

If+ simple past + would, could, might, should + infinitivo (sem to)
If I had lots of money, I could travel round the world. (Se eu tivesse muito dinheiro, eu
poderia viajar pelo mundo).
If I went to Barcelona, I would visit the Market. (Se eu fosse a Barcelona, eu iria visitar
o mercado)
If I didn’t have to work, I would go to the beach today. (Se eu não tivesse que trabalhar,
eu iria para a praia hoje)
If I lived in Spain, I would be happy. (Se eu morasse na Espanha, eu seria feliz)
If I had a million dollars, I would buy a new house. (Se tivesse um milhão de dólares,
eu compraria uma nova casa)
I would buy a new houseif I had a million dollars. (Eu compraria uma casa nova se
tivesse um milhão de dólares).

Marcos said (that) he liked apples. – Marcos disse que gostava de maçãs.
John said he had finished the book the week before. – John disse que tinha
terminado o livro no fim de semana anterior.
Ruby said that she was reading a scientific article. – Ruby disse que estava lendo
um artigo científico.
Larissa said that she had lived there. – Larissa disse que tinha morado lá.
Can → Could
Juliana said: “I can go with you”. – Juliana disse: “Eu posso ir com você”.
Juliana said that she could go with me. – Juliana disse que poderia ir comigo.
Will → Would
She said: “I will travel next month”. – Ela disse: “Vou viajar mês que vem”.
She said she would travel the month after. – Ela disse que viajaria no mês seguinte.
Ana said: “I will take this”. – Ana disse: “Vou pegar isto”.
Ana said that she would take that. – Ana disse que iria pegar aquilo.
