Quando usar THERE IS e THERE ARE

O significado de there is  e there are

There is  e there are  possuem o mesmo significado: o do verbo
“haver” em português. Você pode utilizá-las para indicar a
existência de objetos, pessoas e conceitos. Veja só:
 There are two things I really love in the world: pizza and soda. – Há duas
coisas que eu realmente amo no mundo: pizza e refrigerante.
 There is a book on the table.  – Há um livro na mesa.
 There is not a single person on Earth who knows how to bake a cake like my
mother.  – Não existe uma única pessoa na Terra que sabe fazer um bolo
como minha mãe.
Perceba que, no português, utilizamos palavras como “existe” e
“tem”, que também podem ser traduzidas como there is  e there are.

Singular e plural
O erro mais comum na hora de utilizar essas expressões está na
confusão entre o plural e singular. Veja os exemplos:

Singular – There is
 There is a giant cockroach in the kitchen!  – Tem uma barata gigante na
cozinha!
 There is a rock on the way.  – Tem uma pedra no caminho.

Plural – There are

 There are three slices of pizza in the fridge.  – Tem três pedaços de pizza na
geladeira.
 There are a lot of flowers on my yard.  – Tem um monte de flores no meu
jardim!

Formas negativa e interrogativa

As regras do verbo to be também se aplicam nesse caso. Olhe só:
 Is there anything I can do for you?  – Tem algo que eu possa fazer por você?
 Are there any questions?  – Há alguma pergunta?
 There is not anything I can do for you.  – Não há nada que eu possa fazer
por você.
 There are not enough bananas to make the cake.  – Não há bananas
suficientes para fazer o bolo.

Um erro comum
Tome cuidado! A semelhança semântica no português entre as
palavras “ter” e “existir” cria uma confusão bastante comum entre
os brasileiros, já que o verbo have  também pode ser traduzido
como “tem”. Isso resulta em frases erradas, como essas:

 Have a coin in my pocket. (errado)

 There is a coin in my pocket.  (correto) – Tem uma moeda no meu
bolso.
 Have a desk in the bedroom.  (errado)
 There is a desk in my bedroom.  (correto) – Tem uma escrivaninha no
meu quarto.
