CONDITIONALS
O QUE SÃO?
1. Zero conditional
2. First conditional
3. Second conditional
4. Third conditional

Existem também casos em que eles se misturam um pouco (mixed conditionals).

FORMAS DE USO:
1. Zero conditional: Usamos o zero conditional para falar sobre coisas que são geralmente
verdadeiras e para dar conselhos.

Forma: IF/ WHEN/ UNLESS + VERB (present), VERB (present simple)

Ex. If I drink coffee, I get a headache. - Se eu bebo café, fico com dor de cabeça. (algo que
geralmente acontece)

Ex. When water gets to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils. - Quando a água chega a 100 graus
Célsius, ela ferve. (uma verdade)

Agora você! Como você traduziria essas frases?

1. Quando chove, as ruas enchem de água.
2. Se eu não tomo café da manhã, me sinto tonta.

Respostas:
1. When it rains, the streets flood/fill with water.
2. If I don’t eat breakfast, I feel dizzy.

2. First conditional: Usamos o first conditional para falar sobre uma forte possibilidade ou
certeza no futuro.

Forma: IF + SUBJECT + VERB (simple present) + SUBJECT + WILL + VERB

Ex. If you work hard, you will be successful. - Se você trabalhar duro, você terá sucesso.
(forte possibilidade; certeza)
Ex. If I get the job, I will be so happy. - Se eu conseguir o emprego, estarei muito feliz. (forte
possibilidade; certeza.)

3. Second Conditional: Usamos o second conditional para falar sobre situações hipotéticas,
não verdadeiras ou possíveis no presente ou no futuro; coisas que não acontecem ou não vão
acontecer.

Forma: IF + subject + VERB (simple past)/ + WOULD + VERB

1. If I had more time, I would learn to play the piano. - Se eu tivesse mais tempo, aprenderia
a tocar a piano. (tivesse = had, aprenderia = would learn)
2. If I could have any talent, I would want to know how to sing really well. - Se eu pudesse
ter qualquer talento, eu quereria saber cantar muito bem. (pudesse = could, quereria = would
want)
3. What would you do if you had more time? - O que você faria se você tivesse mais tempo?
(faria = would do, tivesse = had)
4. If Maria won the lottery, she would buy a better house. - Se a Maria ganhasse na loteria,
ela compraria uma casa melhor. (ganhasse = won, compraria = would buy)
5. If they knew English, they would travel more. - Se eles soubessem inglês, viajariam mais.
(soubessem = knew, viajariam = would travel)

4. Third Conditional: Usamos o third conditional para falar sobre uma situação hipotética no
passado, algo que não aconteceu, mas teria acontecido se algo tivesse sido diferente.

Forma: If + subject + PAST PERFECT, WOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE

1. If Paulo had studied more, he would have passed the test. - Se Paulo tivesse estudado mais,
ele teria passado na prova. (tivesse estudado = had studied, teria passado = would have passed)
2. If you had prepared more, you would have gotten the job. - Se você tivesse preparado
mais, você teria conseguido o emprego. (tivesse preparado = had prepared, teria conseguido =
would have gotten)
3. We would have arrived on time for the concert, if we hadn’t gotten stuck in traffic. - Nós
teríamos chegado a tempo para o show se nós não tivéssemos ficado presos no trânsito. (teri-
amos chegado = would have arrived, tivéssemos ficado = had gotten)
4. If I had known that Sheila was sick, I would have brought her some soup. - Se eu soubesse
que a Sheila estava doente, teria trazido sopa para ela. (soubesse = had known, teria trazido =
would have brought)
5. If you had left your house earlier, you wouldn’t have missed your flight. - Se você tivesse
saído de casa mais cedo, não teria perdido seu voo. (tivesse saído = had left, teria perdido =
would have missed)
