A huge iceberg has broken off from the northern section of the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica, almost 10 years after
scientists discovered the first cracks.
Scientists expected the detaching of the iceberg to happen, after monitoring the area with GPS instruments and
satellite imagery on a daily basis. They have been closely watching the many cracks and chasms that have formed
in the shelf over the past years.
Recent data indicated that the region north of the new crack was very unstable, moving around 5 meters per day.
Then, on Friday, February 26, the newer crack widened rapidly before finally breaking free from the rest of the floating
ice shelf. The 150-meter-thick berg was compared in size to the English county of Bedfordshire, measuring to cover
1,270 square kilometers.
Satellite monitoring offers views of events that happen in remote regions, regardless of day or night, which is
especially important through the long, dark winter months.

Man Steals a Car

Police in Ontario, Canada, is searching for a male suspect involved in a vehicle theft that nearly killed a car

New Ways of Business

Governments across the US __________ (31) down concert venues, cinemas and theaters because of coronavirus.
However, ______ (32) people in the industries are looking for new ways to continue their work.
Several fundraising efforts have been launched to help keep theaters and theater workers operating during the
closures. Owners of theaters are coming up with new ideas on how to keep people engaged and how to work online.
Despite the fear and uncertainty, it is an opportunity to innovate the industry. Some improv shows and comedy venues
perform remotely, and they livestream to audiences. In some cases, they sell more tickets than the physical theater
can allow.
Communication professor, Dustin York, said that there are opportunities for small businesses too. For example,
yoga instructors can do online classes for free, and once they attract enough customers who like them, then it could
become an actual business.

Some Elephants in Africa Are Just a Step From Extinction

A key conservation group counted the continent’s elephants as two species for the first time, highlighting the
dire threat to forest elephants.

While some African elephants parade across the savanna and thrill tourists on safari, others are more discreet.
They stay hidden in the forests, eating fruit.
“You feel pretty lucky when you catch sight of them,” said Kathleen Gobush, a Seattle-based conservation
biologist and member of the African Elephant Specialist Group within the International Union for Conservation of
Nature, or I.U.C.N.
The threat of extinction has diminished the odds of spotting one of these wood-dwelling elephants in recent
decades, according to a new I.U.C.N. Red List assessment of African elephants released Thursday. The Red List
categorizes species by their risk of forever vanishing from the world. The new assessment is the first in which the
conservation union treats Africa’s forest and savanna elephants as two species instead of one.
Both are in bad shape. The last time the group assessed African elephants, in 2008, it listed them as vulnerable.
Now it says savanna elephants are endangered, one category worse.
The shy forest elephants have lost nearly nine-tenths of their number in a generation and are now critically

Google Aims to Be the Anti-Amazon of E-Commerce. It Has a Long Way to Go.

Google presents itself to independent sellers as cheaper and less restrictive. But it is not clear whether it can
change people’s habits of going straight to Amazon.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Google tried to copy Amazon’s playbook to become the shopping hub of the internet, with
little success. Now it __________something different: the anti-Amazon strategy.
Google is trying to present itself as a cheaper and less restrictive option for independent sellers. And it is focused
on driving traffic to sellers’ sites, not selling its own version of products, as Amazon does.
In the last year, Google eliminated fees for merchants and allowed sellers to list their wares in its search results
for free. It is also trying to make it easier for small, independent shops to upload their inventory of products to appear
in search results and buy ads on Google by teaming up with Shopify, which powers online stores for 1.7 million
merchants who sell directly to consumers.

But like Google’s many attempts during its two-decade quest to compete with Amazon, this one shows little sign
of working. Google has nothing as alluring as the $295 billion that passed through Amazon’s third-party marketplace
in 2020. The amount of goods people buy on Google is “very small” by comparison — probably around $1 billion, said
Juozas Kaziukenas, the founder of Marketplace Pulse, a research company.
Amazon is a fixture in the lives of many Americans. It has usurped Google as the starting point for shoppers and
has become equally essential for marketers. Amazon’s global advertising business grew 30 percent to $17.6 billion in
2020, trailing only Google and Facebook in the United States.

Atlanta Shooting

A 21-year-old man killed eight people in three massage parlors in Atlanta, Georgia, US.
The attacks happened last week on Tuesday afternoon, and they happened shortly after each other. Police said
that seven of the victims were women, and six were Asian-Americans.
It seems that the killer acted alone, but police do not know why he did it. It was not clear if the man´s plan was
to kill Asian people, but some Asian people were scared after the attacks. More attacks on Asian-Americans happened

Police in Ontario, Canada, is searching for a male suspect involved in a vehicle theft that nearly killed a car
salesman.
Two individuals arrived to ask about a black BMW M4; however, it soon turned out that they weren´t really there
to buy it, after one put the car into gear and started driving off. The dealership employee jumped onto the hood of
the vehicle, as the suspect drove out of the lot, holding on even as the vehicle hit the main road at speed. As the car
accelerated along the busy road, the salesman was flung to the ground and he was nearly hit by an oncoming car.
The salesman was taken to hospital and reportedly, he suffered lacerations to his feet after his shoes and socks
came off during the fall.
The London Police Service is looking for the suspect´s accomplice driving a silver Audi and asking drivers
for dashcam footage of the incident.

CPF 17419457719
