Hello, student! Nesta semana vamos estudar sobre uma tradicional festividade popular no
Brasil: a festa junina. Uma pena que neste ano não poderemos comemorá-la juntos.

June Parties, or Festas Juninas as they are known in Brazil, are parties held throughout
the month of June to commemorate:

Santo Antônio – Saint Anthony – 13th June

São João – Saint John – 24th June
São Pedro – Saint Peter – 29th June

The Portuguese brought this culture to Brazil when they colonized the country in the early
1500´s, the parties are a celebration with fireworks, bonfires, dancing, eating and drinking,
costume wearing and games.
The traditional costume for the parties is ´Caipira´, or ´Country´ in English, and the people
enjoy square dancing dressed in an assortment of chequered shirts, straw hats, painted
freckles and riding boots.
