RESUMO
ABSTRACT
Between 1988 and 1992, the Brazilian Navy and PETROBRAS carried out
regional geophysical surveys along the continental margin off northeastern Brazil,
as part of the LEPLAC Project. As a result, the geological evolution of this part of
the Brazilian continental margin can be better understood, particularly regarding
the ocean-continent transition process, the tectonic framework of the oceanic
crust, and the depositional history of the region. On the Sergipe and Alagoas
basins, located to the south of the Ascension Fracture Zone, the ocean-continent
transition is associated with rapid crustal thinning, involving intense magmatic
activity and emplacement of wedges of seaward-dipping reflectors. To the north of
that structural lineament, a rifted marginal plateau (Pernambuco Plateau) evolved
as a result of differential crustal stretching. Detachment faulting was the main
mechanism that controlled extension along all these basins. Farther north, near to
a major transform margin, the Potiguar Basin ocean-continent boundary was
analyzed using a single seismic profile, collected in an East-West direction. In this
direction, parallel to the fracture zones and to the extension, the basin shows a
normal passive margin-style, instead of transform-related structures. Using
multichannel seismic profiles and gravity data derived from GEOSAT altimetry,
seven oceanic fracture zones were properly located and correlated to their
counterpart lineaments in the continental margin. Besides the E-W oriented
fracture zones/lineament systems, this study also focussed on the NW-SE
seamount alignments which are very conspicuous in the northeastern continental
margin off Brazil. Changes in sea-floor spreading directions and/or plate drift over
hotspots are the mechanisms evoked to explain such structural alignments.
Dealing with the sedimentary evolution of the region, five depositional super-se-
quences were mapped, from the shelf to the lower continental rise. All of them are
bounded by regional erosional unconformities, which can be correlated to relative
sea-level falls on the global cycle chart. The erosional character of these surfaces
in the deep continental rise was the key for interpreting their origin: since abyssal
erosional surfaces were not supposed to be formed prior to the development of a
strong thermohaline oceanic convection, during Oligocene times, one can infer
that tectonic causes, superimposed on eustatic sea-level changes, played an
XVI
TECTONISMO, VULCANISMO, SEDIMENTAÇÃO E PROCESSOS EROSIVOS NA MARGEM CONTINENTAL NORDESTE
important role on the generation of the older sequence boundaries, which limit the
Upper Cretaceous and the Paleocene depositional units. Some tectono-eustatic
influences can be ascribed to changes in plate motion, variation on sea-floor
spreading rates and lithospheric flexure, all of them leading to intraplate stresses.
While the older unconformities are likely to carry a strong tectonic imprint, the
younger ones, which limit the Oligo-Miocene, the Mid-Neogene and the Upper
Neogene-Quaternary sequences, are undoubtedly linked to glacio-eustatic events.
The Oligocene sequence boundary is probably associated with the initiation of the
Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) flow in the Brazil Basin, c. 32 Ma. The northward-
flowing AABW is supposed to be the main cause for the excavation of the 800-km-
long and up to 480-m-deep Pernambuco Seachannel across the Bahia Seamounts
region. This feature appears to have an interconnected network of tributary
channels that are linked up with slope canyons and other paths of the AABW
coming from the south. So, rather than a single deep-sea channel, it forms a
complex submarine drainage system, which debouches in the Pernambuco
Abyssal Plain, where a contouritic fan-like deposit was built up – the Pernambuco
Contourite Fan. In the seismic profiles, bottom-current-controlled deposits - the
contourite drifts - can be recognized over a broad region, mainly along the western
margin of the Pernambuco Seachannel, under the influence of the Coriolis force.

No modelo interpretativo

Eventuais modelos alternativos
Brozena, N.Z. Cherkis, e H.S.
A Model for the Early
Opening of the South Atlantic”, tenha sido publicado.
11

Todavia, o

tese (ver item anterior).

erodir, transportar e redepositar areias finas a grossas (Shanmugan et alii, op. cit,),
incluindo frações do tamanho cascalho (Masson et alii, op. cit., Fig. 6.7).

8. MAPAS DE ISÓPACAS
• Escala: 1/4.000.000.
mapas expressam as espessuras sedimentares sobrejacentes à crosta oceânica
da margem continental nordeste. Dada a pouca cobertura sísmica,

Contour currents, sediment drifts and abyssal erosion on the northeastern continental
margin off Brazil
Abstract: Seismic reflection data collected as part of the Brazilian Continental Shelf Survey has allowed the recognition of
large sediment drifts related to bottom currents along the continental rise off northeastern Brazil. Antarctic Bottom Water
(AABW), which flows northward across a physiographic constriction – the hotspot-related Bahia Seamounts – has controlled
the deposition of these contourite drifts. Following this pathway since the Middle Oligocene, AABW has also led to the
formation of regional unconformities and the excavation of the 800 km long and up to 470 m deep Pernambuco Seachannel.
This feature, which represents the ‘trunk channel’ of a complex submarine drainage system, flows into the Pernambuco
Abyssal Plain, building a large fan-like deposit – the Pernambuco Countourite Fan. As observed elsewhere along continen-
tal margins, the geometry of the sediment drifts alternates from mounded to sheeted, channel-related or confined, depending
on the physiographic setting and on the velocity of the flow. The so-called ‘modified drift-turbidite systems’, formed by an
interplay between downslope sediment gravity flows and alongslope bottom-current-controlled deposition, are well
developed near the continental slope region, particularly in the Sergipe Basin, where the São Francisco River has built its
deep-sea fan.

by the time of DSDP-23/24 core description, there was a strong turbidite paradigm in force, and the early concepts of contourites (Hollister & Heezen 1972)
were just about to be introduced.

unconformity, showing that the erosional activity of the bottom current (AABW), rather than restricted to a confined deep-sea channel setting, affects a broader region of the continental margin. The selected
zoom displays remarkable seismic features related to lateral (landward) channel migration of the contour current, over both the Mid-Oligocene and the Lower Miocene unconformities. The geometry of these
channel-related drifts resemble that of fluvial point bars. The slope region, where the São Francisco Canyon is carved, is an ideal setting for an interplay between turbidity and contour current processes. One

depositional pattern is aggradational. The arrow at the upper zoom (a) points out to a progradational unit, maybe related to an eventual increase on the velocity of the flow. One can notice that the main

Fig. 6. Dip seismic line C, which traverses the continental margin off Alagoas basin (see Fig. 1 for location). Channel-related drifts and mounded drifts can be observed in both upper zooms. At the case b,
arrows point out to seismic features related to drift westward progradation over the Mid-Oligocene unconformity. The lower profile (case c), which crosses line C, shows typical sediment waves, with an average
wavelength of 3 km. The Pernambuco Seachannel, with a 470 m-deep incision at this situation, has a higher left margin, which resembles an asymmetrical levee of a turbidity channel. This similarity, however, is
apparent, since the higher margin is not formed by true overbanking deposition, but mainly by drift aggradation/progradation during lateral channel migration, under the influence of Coriolis force. One can
observe, at case b, a different seismic character for each sequence: an almost transparent aspect at the Upper Cretaceous unit; plane-parallel reflectors at the Palaeocene sequence; chaotic fluid-escape-related
character at the Eocene unit; low-frequency and moderate amplitude reflectors at the post-Eocene sequences, with a predominant progradational pattern at the lower unit, which changes to a more
aggradational style toward the top units. At the ocean-continent boundary region, volcanic plugs and seaward-dipping reflectors wedges (SDRs) borders a distal rift(?) sequence (UK, Upper Cretaceous
