G7: Boris Johnson kicks off summit with plea to tackle inequality

Boris Johnson has urged fellow world leaders to "build back better" after the Covid pandemic at this
week's G7 summit in Cornwall.
The UK prime minister said it was vital to learn from the "mistakes" of the 2008 financial crisis and tackle
the "scar" of inequality.
After a day of talks at the seaside resort of Carbis Bay, leaders have joined the Queen for a dinner nearby.
The distribution of Covid vaccines is also high on the summit agenda.
Earlier, the leaders posed for a group photo with the Queen, where the monarch was heard to joke: "Are
you supposed __________ (1) as if you're enjoying yourself?"
The leaders around the Queen laughed, and Mr Johnson replied emphatically: "Yes."
The prime minister added: "We have been enjoying ___________ (2) - in spite of appearances."
US President Joe Biden is among those being hosted by Mr Johnson for the three-day meeting, as well
the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada.
It is the first face-to-face summit of the G7 - representing most of the world's biggest economies - since
CPF 16902932760

before the pandemic started early last year.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel
are also attending.
In his opening remarks at the main round-table discussions, Mr Johnson said that, as the world recovered
from the pandemic, it was important to "level up across our societies" and "build back better".
He added: "I actually think that we have a huge opportunity to that because, as G7, we are united in our
vision for a cleaner, greener world, a solution to the problems of climate change."
The prime minister also said it was "vital that we don't repeat the mistakes of the last great crisis - the
last great economic recession of 2008 - when the recovery was not uniform across all parts of society".

McDonald's hit by data breach in Taiwan and South Korea

McDonald's is the latest big company to be hit by a data breach that has exposed customers' details.
The world's biggest burger chain said cyber attackers had accessed a "small number" of files on
customers in South Korea and Taiwan.
The breach included e-mail, delivery addresses and phone numbers - but not payment details.
A spokeswoman for the firm said it would take steps to "notify regulators and customers listed in these
files".
The details of the breach, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, were discovered during an external
investigation after unauthorised activity was spotted on the company's network.
The company said its "substantial investment" in cyber security meant it was identified quickly.
"These tools allowed us to quickly identify and contain recent unauthorised activity on our network. A
thorough investigation was conducted, and we worked with experienced third parties to support this
investigation," it said.
Operations at its restaurants were not affected by the hack.
The fast food firm did say, however, that personal data on employees was also accessed - although it
did not say in which countries.

Arts (EA) said on Thursday that hackers had stolen valuable information including source code for
games such as FIFA 21.

Motor neurone disease: Intense exercise increases risk, say scientists

Regular and strenuous exercise increases the risk of motor neurone disease in people who are
genetically vulnerable, say scientists.

The team at the University of Sheffield said nobody should stop ________ (1) as a result of their
study.
But they hope the findings could lead to ways of screening people who may be at higher risk
and give tailored advice.
Overall, around one in 300 people will develop motor neurone disease.

CPF 16902932760
Caderno 1 - EsPCEx
Prof. Leonardo Pontes – inglês

It affects people's ability to move, talk and even breathe as the motor neurones that carry
messages from the brain to the muscles fail. It can dramatically shorten people's lives.
Who gets it and why is a complicated, poorly-understood mix of the genetic risk you are born
with and other environmental factors that build up over a lifetime.
There has long been a connection between exercise and the disease, but whether it was a
genuine "cause" or just a "coincidence" has been the source of fierce debate.
Studies in Italian footballers _________ (2) rates up to six times higher than normal. Athletes
including Rob Burrow (rugby league), Stephen Darby (football) and Doddie Weir (rugby union) have all
spoken openly about the disease.
"We have conclusively said exercise is a risk factor for motor neurone disease", Dr Johnathan
Cooper-Knock, one of the researchers, said.
"The numbers of high profile athletes affected with MND is not a coincidence."
The researchers analysed data from the UK Biobank project, ________(3)has detailed genetic
samples from half a million people.
They used a technique called Mendelian randomisation to turn that data into an experiment,
and showed people ________ (4) DNA makes them more likely to do strenuous activity were more likely
to get MND.
The study, published in the journal EBioMedicine, also showed:
• many of the genes known to increase the risk of motor neurone disease change their
CPF 16902932760

behaviour in response to exercise

• people with the most common mutation linked to MND develop the disease at an earlier
age if they exercise strenuously
Strenuous and regular was defined as more than 15-30 minutes on more than 2-3 days per week.
But obviously, most people who exercise that much do not develop motor neurone disease.
Dr Cooper-Knock said: "We don't know who is at risk and we wouldn't go as far as advising who
should and shouldn't exercise.
"If everyone _________ (5) exercising that __________ (6) more harm than good."
The hope is the work will eventually lead to a way of tailoring advice similar to screening
footballers for heart problems.
Prof Dame Pamela Shaw, the director of the Neuroscience Institute in Sheffield, said: "This
research goes some way towards unravelling the link between high levels of physical activity and the
development of MND in certain genetically at-risk groups."
It is thought low levels of oxygen in the body during strenuous exercise could be leading to a
process called oxidative stress in the motor neurones - some of the biggest and most oxygen-
demanding cells in the body.
This may lead to damage and eventually cause the cells to die in people who have that genetic
vulnerability.
Dr Brian Dickie, from the Motor Neurone Disease Association said more research along these
lines was needed.
He said the genetic and environmental components of MND were often studied in isolation
___________ (7)"the power of this research comes from bringing these pieces of the puzzle together".

China's Zhurong Mars rover takes a selfie

Wish you were here!

China's Zhurong rover _________ (1) back a batch of new images from Mars - including a "selfie".
The robot, which landed in May, positioned a wireless camera on the ground and then rolled back a
short distance to take the snap.
To Zhurong's right is the rocket-powered platform that brought the six-wheeled vehicle to a soft
touchdown.
Both display prominent Chinese flags.
A second image, taken by the rover, shows the platform on its own.
Visible is the ramp down which Zhurong had to drive to get on to the surface; and the tracks it left in
the dust as it turned around.
A third picture looks out to the horizon from the landing site. This region is known as Utopia Planitia, a
vast terrain in Mars' northern hemisphere.
All the images were released by the Chinese space agency in a ceremony to celebrate the success of
the rover mission.
Scientists are hoping to get at least 90 Martian days of service out of Zhurong.
The robot looks a lot like the American space agency's (Nasa) Spirit and Opportunity vehicles from the
2000s.
It weighs some 240kg. A tall mast carries cameras to take pictures and aid navigation; five additional
instruments will investigate the mineralogy of local rocks and the general nature of the environment,
including the weather.

Windows 10 to be retired in 2025, as new OS unveils

Microsoft says it will stop supporting Windows 10 in 2025, as it prepares to unveil a major revamp of its
Windows operating system later this month.
When Windows 10 ___________ (1), Microsoft said it was intended to be the final version of the operating system.
But from 14 October 2025, there will be no new updates or security fixes for either the Home or Pro versions.
And Microsoft says _____ (2) successor will represent one of the "most significant updates" to the OS in the past decade.
Its predecessor, Windows 7, was retired in 2020, although businesses could pay Microsoft to continue receiving updates
for Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise.
Windows 10 was released in July 2015 and dubbed "Windows as a service", which meant the software was gradually
updated at no extra charge, rather than the company releasing a new version of its OS every few years.
At the time, chief executive Satya Nadella said it marked a "new era" for personal computing.
Developer evangelist and Microsoft employee Jerry Nixon went further, describing it as "the last version of Windows".
And Mr Nadella added he was particularly "excited" by features such as digital personal assistant Cortana, which was
CPF 16902932760

intended to compete with Apple's Siri.

But Cortana never really took off and in April this year it was retired on mobile, focusing instead on productivity help in
Windows 10, Outlook and Teams.
Also:
• A month after Windows 10's release, many popular webcams stopped working, with Microsoft having to patch a bug
in the way Windows encoded video
• Hundreds of users complained they lost files and their emails no longer synced, and reported issues with broken wi-
fi connections and printing
• According to consumer watchdog Which?, some users had to pay for their computer to be repaired, while others
said they felt "nagged" to upgrade by the regular alerts
• A year after its release, the French data authority said Windows 10 gathered an excessive amount of personal data
on users
Mr Nadella and chief product officer Panos Panay will launch the new OS at a virtual event on 24 June, with Microsoft
now facing stiff competition not just from Apple but also from Google.
While PC sales still dominate - 79.4 million shipped in 2020, according to Gartner - Google's alternative is proving

CPF 16902932760

The prime minister added: "We have been enjoying ___________ (2) - in spite of appearances."
US President Joe Biden is among those being hosted by Mr Johnson for the three-day meeting, as well
the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada.
It is the first face-to-face summit of the G7 - representing most of the world's biggest economies - since
before the pandemic started early last year.

CPF 16902932760

"In the coming days, a _______ (1) additional markets will take steps to address files that contained
employee personal data.
"Moving forward, McDonald's will leverage the findings from the investigation as well as input from
security resources to identify ways to further enhance our existing security measures."

Prof. Leonardo Pontes – inglês

CPF 16902932760

Like the current American rovers (Curiosity and Perseverance), Zhurong has a laser tool to zap rocks to
assess their chemistry. It also has a radar to look for sub-surface water-ice - a capability it shares with
Perseverance.
On Thursday, the US University of Arizona released a colour picture of Zhurong taken from orbit. The
university's camera, called HiRise, is mounted on Nasa's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

num tempo indefinido no passado (Não confunda o nome com o tempo, o tempo chama-se Present
Perfect, mas expressa uma ação ocorrida no passado). A estrutura do present perfect é: HAVE / HAS +
verbo no particípio, como o sujeito é “China's Zhurong rover” (terceira pessoa do singular) então
usaremos o HAS e como o particípio do verbo “send” é “sent”, então fica HAS SENT.

And Mr Nadella added he was particularly "excited" by features such as digital personal assistant Cortana, which was
intended to compete with Apple's Siri.
However, Cortana never really took off and in April this year it was retired on mobile, focusing instead on productivity
help in Windows 10, Outlook and Teams.
Also:
• A month after Windows 10's release, many popular webcams stopped working, with Microsoft having to patch a bug
CPF 16902932760

in the way Windows encoded video

While PC sales still dominate - 79.4 million shipped in 2020, according to Gartner - Google's alternative is proving
popular, with 11.7 million Chromebooks, which run on Google's Chrome OS, shipping in the same timeframe.
Some commentators suggest the new OS will be given a name rather than numbered 11.
Rebranding rumours aside, it is likely to include a host of new features, a more modern look and a redesigned Start
menu.

43. In “[…] the software was gradually updated at no extra charge, rather than the company releasing a
new version […]”. The word means

a) eventually
b) would rather
c) at least
d) at last
e) instead of

c) to leave somewhere, usually without telling anyone that you are going.
d) to suddenly increase in value or amount.
e) to arrive on the ground or other surface after moving down through the air.

A alternativa A está incorreta. to leave the ground and begins to fly = deixar o solo e começar a voar (decolar).
A alternativa B está correta. to start to be successful or popular = começar a ser bem sucedido ou popular.
Nesse caso “took off” significa decolar porém no sentido figurado, no sentido de ter sucesso. Segundo o
texto, “But Cortana never really took off…” (Porém Cortana nunca decolou realmente / nunca teve
sucesso realmente).
A alternativa C está incorreta. to leave somewhere, usually without telling anyone that you are going = sair de algum
lugar, geralmente sem avisar a ninguém que você está indo.
A alternativa D está incorreta. to suddenly increase in value or amount = aumentar repentinamente em valor ou

b) has launched
c) have been launched
d) was launched
e) is launched

Passiva no simple Past = verbo “to be” no passado simples (was / were) + verbo principal no particípio.

“And Microsoft says its successor will represent one of the "most significant updates…"” (E a Microsoft

a) cause.
b) contrast.
c) emphasis.
d) agreement.
e) comparison.

IV. Despite being making a new release, Microsoft will not bring significant changes in the new version
of Windows.

Choose the correct alternative.

a) Only the statements I and II are correct.
