elevados.
Abstract
Sodium Lauryl sulfate (SLS) is an anionic surfactant used in many pharmaceutical forms, although some irritation
potential to the skin is recognised. For that reason LSS is often used as a challenger in several micromethods to
explore human in vivo pathophysiology. Factors such as age, sex, skin hydratation and anatomic region are known to
afect the skins response to the SLS contact. The aim of the present work was to study the influence of the phototype
in the response to the SLS exposure under controlled conditions.
Healthy volunteers (n=12) were grouped according with their phototypes (Group I : Phototype III-IV e Group II :
Phototype V-VI) and submitted to a patch with a 2% solution of SLS on the volunteer's forearm for 24 hours.
After patch removal, volunteers were examined (D1,D2,D7)and several variables assessed: transepidermal water
loss, hydration (2 methods) erythema and local microcirculation.
Results showed significant differences between the groups for TEWL, LDF and erythema, suggesting a higher
susceptibility for whiter types and a faster recovery capacity for the darker ones.

The biometric parameters evaluated were the TransEpidermal Loss of Water (expressed in g/h.m2,
Tewameter TM300 C+K electronics, Germany), local
microcirculation by Laser Doppler Flowmetry - LDF
(expressed in AU, Periflux PF5010, Perimed, Sweden),
Erythema by colorimetry - a* (expressed in AU,
Minolta Chromameter CR-300, Minolta, Japan),
superficial hydration (AU, Corneometer CM 825, C+K
electronics, Germany) and deep hydration (AU,
Moisture meter D, Delfin Technologies, Finland). All
measurements were performed in a laboratory with
permanent control of the relative humidity and
temperature in agreement with the usual
recommendations for this studies10,11,19,20.
