The definite article

O definite article the em ingls corresponde aos determinantes artigos definidos o, a, os,
as em portugus.
Usamos o definite article (artigo definido) a acompanhar um nome quando evidente a que
pessoa, animal ou coisa nos estamos a referir, ou quando o nome se refere a um exemplar
nico.
Ex: I usually go to the supermarket on Liberty Street.
The President is on the TV.

O definite article pode preceder nomes:

o no singular ou no plural;
Ex: the shoe / the shoes; the city / the cities

de rios, mares, cordilheiras e arquiplagos:

Ex: the River Thames, the Nile, the English Channel, the Atlantic Ocean, the Himalayas, the Maldives

de pases com nomes compostos:

Ex: the Democratic Republic of China, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, the
Netherlands

de instrumentos musicais:
Ex: I play the piano

no contveis usados em sentido restrito:

Ex: She loves music.(nome usado no sentido geral)
She loves the music played by her school orchestra.(sentido especfico e bem determinado, a msica

No se usa o definite article antes de:

o Nomes prprios. Ex: Peter is Marys brother.
o Nomes de pases (com exceo dos pases com nomes compostos). Ex: Luxembourg is a small
country.
