ABSTRACT: The current article introduce a study realized near children with type 1
diabetes mellitus, which the main purpose is to understand and explore the disease
experience perceived by them. Grounded theory is described as a remarkable
methodological framework with qualitative features. Data were collected by semi-
structured interview. Ten children, equally shared by gender, with the age range from
7 to 12 years old, compose sampling. The data was collected in Hospital Central
Especializado de Crianças Maria Pia. Results showed the magnitude of disease
experience of those children, that can be explained by developmental peculiarities.
Children narratives showed cultural and social elements, which could be allow a
detailed analysis based on selected narrative conceptualized models. This proposal
also alerts to focus these features in intervention near this population and reinforce the
psychologist role in this field.
Key words: Chronic disease, Diabetes mellitus, Disease significations, Narrative
