Prefcio
Bom passeio!
It is widely known that the Brazilian semiarid is one of the largest and most densely populated semiarids in the world.
Yet this region, traditionally considered poverty stricken and socially underdeveloped, is actually rich with natural
assets and captivating scenery.
Flowers of the Caatinga tours the one-of-a-kind Caatinga Biome, presenting information about the local flora that will
enhance readers' understanding of little known and rarely cultivated species. This region's great potential can and
should be harnessed through appropriate exploration and commercialization. Extracting raw materials for
pharmaceutical manufacturing is just one of the many ways it could bring income to the local population.
The National Institute of the Semiarid (INSA) is dedicated to this quest and has been pursuing new technologies for
utilizing nature's bounty. Promoting this natural wealth and cultivating a new vision of the region are among the
objectives contained in the Institute's 2011-2015 Master Plan.
