 O Pequeno Polegar era chamado assim porque quando nasceu
era tão pequeno quanto um dedo polegar.
Um dia, seu pai o mandou pegar lenha na floresta com os outros
sete irmãos. Mas algo terrível aconteceu: eles se perderam.
Então o Pequeno Polegar subiu numa árvore para ver se conseguia
encontrar o caminho de volta para casa.
2• O Pequeno Polegar
T om Thumb was called that way because when he was born
he was as small as a thumb.
One day, his father sent him and his seven brothers to pick up some
wood in the forest. But something terrible happened: they got lost.
So Tom Thumb climbed a tree to see if he could
find the way back home.

 Ao longe, ele avistou fumaça subindo acima das árvores. Alguém
estava cozinhando! Os irmãos decidiram caminhar naquela direção e
chegaram numa casa bem alta e espaçosa. Eles bateram na porta
e uma mulher grandona, parecendo uma ogra, apareceu e perguntou:
“O que vocês querem?”.

Far away he saw smoke rising above the trees. Someone
was cooking! The brothers decided to walk that way until they
arrived at a very spacious and tall house. They knocked on the door
and a huge woman looking like an ogre appeared and asked:
“What do you want?”

 “Nós nos perdemos, senhora”, o Pequeno Polegar respondeu.
“Estamos com fome e, além do mais, está frio e escuro.
Podemos dormir aqui? Vamos embora amanhã cedo.”
“Coitadinhos”, disse a mulher. “Olha onde vocês vieram parar!
Eu moro com meu marido e minhas filhas, que são ogros e adoram
comer menininhos!”

“We got lost, madam,” Tom Thumb answered.
“We are hungry plus it’s cold and dark.
Can we sleep here? We will leave early in the morning.”
“Oh, poor little things!” said the woman. “Look where you’ve ended up!
I live with my husband and my daughters, who are ogres and love
eating little boys!”

 “Senhora”, o Pequeno Polegar explicou, “se ficarmos do lado de fora,
os lobos vão nos pegar. Talvez a senhora consiga convencer
seu marido a não nos comer.”
Após pensar um pouco, a mulher deixou os irmãos entrarem
e lhes ofereceu comida. Então, ela os escondeu debaixo
da cama de um dos quartos.

“Madam,” Tom Thumb explained, “if we stay outside,
the wolves will catch us. Perhaps you can convince
your husband not to eat us.”
After thinking for a while, the woman let the brothers in
and offered them some food. Then, she hid them under
a bed in one of the rooms.

 Passado um tempo, os meninos ouviram alguém abrir e bater a
porta com força. Bum, bum, bum! Deviam ser os passos do ogro.
“Mulher!”, ele gritou, “Estou sentindo cheiro de meninos aqui dentro!”
“Não, querido, é a carne que está assando.”
“Tem meninos aqui em casa, não minta para mim! Se não
me contar onde eles estão, vou achá-los sozinho!”

After a while, the boys heard someone opening and slamming the
door shut. Bum, bum, bum! It must be the footsteps of the ogre.
“Woman!” he shouted, “I can smell boys in here!”
“No, dear, it’s the meat that is roasting.”
“There are boys in here, don’t lie to me! If you won’t
tell me where they are, I will find them by myself.”

 Farejando o ar, o ogro chegou até o quarto e encontrou
os irmãozinhos.
“Há, há, há! Aqui está meu delicioso jantar!”, ele disse.
“Mas querido, você não pode comê-los hoje!”, ela explicou.
“É melhor deixá-los para amanhã. O jantar está pronto e
não vou jogar nada fora!”

Sniffing the air, the ogre reached the bedroom and found
the little brothers.
“Ha, ha, ha! Here is my delicious dinner!” he said.
“But dear, you can’t eat them today!” she explained.
“You’d better leave them for tomorrow. Dinner is ready and
I won’t throw anything away!”

 “Mmm… você está certa”, concordou o ogro. “Leve esses meninos
até o quarto das nossas filhas e coloque-os para dormir.”
As meninas eram pequenas ogras que ainda não comiam crianças,
mas bem que queriam experimentar. Dormiam juntas sem tirar
as lindas coroas de ouro que seu pai lhes tinha dado com tanto carinho.

“Mmm… you are right,” agreed the ogre. “Take these boys
to our daughters’ room and put them in bed to sleep.”
The girls were small ogresses who didn’t eat children yet,
but they fancied trying them. They slept together without taking off
the beautiful gold crowns their father had lovingly given them.

 A mulher colocou os meninos numa cama ao lado da cama das filhas
e deu um chapeuzinho para cada um deles porque estava frio e
não havia aquecimento na casa. Depois disso, foi dormir
com seu marido, que tinha trabalhado demais e estava roncando
fazia um tempão.

The woman put the boys in a bed next to her daughters’
and gave each of them a little hat because it was cold and
there was no heating in the house. After that, she went to sleep
with her husband, who had worked too much and had been snoring
for a long long time.

 O Pequeno Polegar não conseguia dormir, pensando e pensando
como poderia sair dali. Se eles não fugissem,
o ogro iria comê-los! Finalmente, ele teve uma ideia.
Sem fazer barulho, tirou os chapeuzinhos dos irmãos, foi até a
cama das meninas e trocou as coroas pelos chapéus. Depois, colocou
as coroas na cabeça de seus irmãos e voltou para a cama.

Tom Thumb couldn’t sleep, thinking and thinking again
about how he could get out of there. If they didn’t run away,
the ogre would eat them! Finally he had an idea.
He quietly took off his brothers’ little hats, went to the
girls’ bed and changed the crowns for the hats. Then he put
the crowns on his brothers’ heads and went back to bed.

 Um pouco antes do amanhecer, o ogro acordou com muita fome.
“Estou com vontade de comer aqueles meninos com ovos mexidos!”,
ele pensou. “Vou assá-los no forno lá fora, assim
ninguém vai me ver e vou comê-los sozinho. Minha esposa e
as meninas que comam outra coisa no café da manhã, há, há!”

Just before sunrise, the ogre woke up very hungry.
“I feel like eating those boys with scrambled eggs!”
he thought. “I’m going to roast them in the oven outside so that
nobody sees me and I’ll eat them by myself. My wife and
the girls can eat something else for breakfast, ha, ha!”

 Ele pegou um saco, foi até onde os meninos estavam
dormindo e colocou a mão na cabeça deles.
“Deus do céu! Estas são minhas filhas”, ele pensou quando
sentiu as coroas. “Achei que elas estivessem do outro lado.”
Depois foi até a outra cama e começou a colocar as
meninas dormindo, uma a uma, dentro do saco.

He took a bag, went to where the boys were
sleeping and touched their heads.
“Good heavens! These are my daughters,” he thought when
he touched the crowns. “I thought they were on the other side.”
Then he went to the other bed and started putting the
sleeping girls one by one in the bag.

 Assim que o ogro saiu, o Pequeno Polegar e seus irmãos fugiram
pela janela. Quando o ogro percebeu que tinha pegado as
filhas por engano, voltou correndo para o quarto
e ficou furioso ao ver que os meninos não estavam mais lá.
“Isso tudo é culpa da minha esposa”, ele pensou.

As soon as the ogre left, Tom Thumb and his brothers ran away
through the window. When the ogre noticed he had taken his
daughters by mistake, he went running back to the bedroom
and got furious to see that the boys were no longer there.
“This is all my wife’s fault,” he thought.

 “Bem, minha querida”, reclamou com ela, “você vai pagar por isso.
Vá pegar minha bota de sete léguas. Vou procurar aquelas
crianças levadas.”
As botas eram mágicas. Não só se adaptavam a todo
tamanho de pé, como também levavam as pessoas para qualquer
lugar, bem mais rápido que um avião.

“Well, my dear,” he complained to her, “you’ll pay for this!
Go get my seven-league boots. I’m going to look for those
naughty kids!”
The boots were magic. Not only did they adapt to anybody’s
foot size, but they also took a person anywhere
much faster than a plane.

 Quando o ogro já estava chegando perto deles, os meninos se
esconderam nos galhos mais altos de uma árvore. Mas o homem malvado
teve a brilhante ideia de dormir e esperar que descessem.
E ainda estava roncando quando o Pequeno Polegar mandou seus
irmãos correrem para casa. Enquanto isso, ele ia tentar fazer algo
muito corajoso.

When the ogre was getting close to them, the boys
hid in the highest branches of a tree. But the wicked man
had the bright idea of sleeping and waiting for them to get down.
And he was still snoring when Tom Thumb told his
brothers to run home. Meanwhile, he would try to do something
very brave.

 Com muito cuidado, o Pequeno Polegar tirou as botas do ogro
e as calçou. Depois, chegou em casa num pulo só. Dizem que
ele ficou rico levando mensagens aqui e ali com muita rapidez,
e que a família dele viveu feliz para sempre. Dizem também que o
ogro desistiu de comer crianças e que abriu uma pizzaria
na floresta vizinha.

Taking a lot of care, Tom Thumb took the ogre’s boots off
and put them on. Then he arrived home with one jump. They say
that he became rich by taking messages here and there very fast
and that his family lived happily ever after. They also say that the
ogre gave up eating children and opened a pizza bar
in the neighboring forest.
