DEFINITE ARTICLE “THE”

Usamos” the” quando nos referimos a uma "coisa" específica, que tanto nós quanto
a(s) pessoa(s) com quem estamos falando sabe(m) qual é - essa "coisa" é conhecida ou pode
ser identificada a partir do contexto da conversa. É bem parecido com o português:

 Here's the book I promised you. (Aqui está o livro que te prometi).

 How's the wife? (Como vai a esposa?)

Mas há dois erros bem comuns entre os falantes de português:

 THE usado antes de nome próprio The Karen is my friend. (Para nós é
comum dizer A Karen é minha amiga - no inglês não!) THE usado antes de
possessivos The her cat is big. (Sabe quando dizemos O seu gato ou O gato
dela? Pois é... no inglês não se usa o artigo)

THE:
O artigo definido é usado:

1) antes de substantivos que podem ser precedidos ou não por adjetivos. Ex: the girl ,the
pretty girl

2) antes de nomes de instrumentos musicais ou nomes de famílias. Ex: the piano , the
Kennedys

3) antes de nomes de oceanos, mares, rios. Ex: the Pacific Ocean, The River Nile.

4) antes de nomes de hotéis, cinemas, teatros,museus, grupos musicais, trens e navios.

Ex.: The Titanic, The Beatles, The National Gallery

5) antes de um representante de uma classe ,espécie ou grupo de pessoas: Ex: the poor ,
the rich, the Young, the old

6) antes de um substantivo único na espécie. Ex: the earth , the sun, the moon.

7) Diante de nomes de países no plural . Ex.: The U.S.A, The United Kingdom, etc

8) Dizemos the radio mas não the television, a não ser que seja o aparelho de tevê. Ex.:
I always listen to the radio. I always watch television

MAS , se for o aparelho de tevê, o artigo é usado : Can you turn off the television,
please?
Quando o artigo the é omitido:

1) antes de nomes próprios, nomes de idiomas e ciências. Ex: Beth, English,

geography

2) antes de substantivos de uso comum e de substantivos incontáveis. Ex: gold , money ,

coffee

3) antes de pronomes possessivos. Ex: our dress , their house

4) Diante de nomes de lagos, montanhas e ilhas. Ex : Mount Everest, lake Michigan.

5) Quando falamos sobre pessoas ou coisas no sentido geral. Ex.: I don’t like dogs,
Elephants are heavy animals.

6) Diante de nomes de esportes. Ex. : My brother plays soccer and basketball.

7) Diante de partes do corpo. Ex.: I’m going to wash my hair

8) Diante de ruas e avenidas. Ex.: I live on Rua Primavera

9) Quando usamos Mr/Mrs./Captain/Doctor + nome de pessoas. Ex. Mr. Smith, Doctor

10) Normalmente não usamos o artigo antes de nomes de refeições. Ex. What time is
dinner? What did you have for breakfast?
