 E ra uma vez um menino e uma menina, João e Maria,
que moravam com o pai e a madrasta perto da floresta.
O pai era lenhador, e o que ele conseguia
ganhar não bastava para sustentar a família, porque o
país era muito pobre e apenas algumas pessoas tinham dinheiro
para comprar lenha. Então, quase não havia o que comer em casa.
2• João e Maria
O nce upon a time, a boy and a girl named Hansel and Gretel
lived with their father and stepmother near the forest.
The father was a woodcutter, and what he managed
to earn was not enough to maintain the family because the
country was very poor and only a few people had money
to buy wood. So, there was almost nothing to eat at home.

 “Temos que nos livrar das crianças”, João e Maria ouviram
a madrasta dizer uma noite. “Vamos abandoná-los na floresta.
Eles vão achar um lugar para dormir e algo para comer.”
O pai, claro, não queria isso, mas a madrasta insistiu
tanto que, por fim, ele concordou.

“We have to get rid of the children”, Hansel and Gretel heard
the stepmother say one night. “Let’s abandon them in the forest.
They will find where to sleep and what to eat.”
The father of course didn’t want to, but the stepmother insisted
so much that he finally agreed.

 Enquanto Maria caía no sono chorando, João saiu de casa
e, sob a luz do luar, recolheu várias pedrinhas brancas
e as guardou nos bolsos.
De manhã cedo, a família toda foi para a floresta e,
sem ser visto, João começou a jogar as
pedrinhas pelo caminho.

While Gretel fell asleep crying, Hansel left the house
and in the moonlight he picked up a lot of little white stones
that he kept in his pockets.
Early in the morning all the family went to the forest,
and without being seen, Hansel started dropping
the little stones on the way.

 Quando eles já estavam longe, em um lugar desconhecido,
e não saberiam mais o caminho de volta para casa, o pai disse:
“Fiquem aqui enquanto vamos pegar um pouco de madeira”.
Então, a noite veio e os pais não voltaram.
“Não se preocupe”, João disse a Maria. “Amanhã vamos achar
o caminho de volta.”

When they were far away, in an unknown place,
and wouldn’t know the way back anymore, the father said:
“Stay here while we pick up some wood.”
Then night time came and their parents hadn’t come back.
“Don’t worry,” Hansel told Gretel. “Tomorrow we’ll find
the way back.”

 E assim foi: seguindo as pedrinhas que João tinha jogado
pelo chão, eles conseguiram encontrar o caminho de volta para casa.
O pai ficou feliz, mas a madrasta, não.
Então, alguns dias depois, quando estavam todos novamente
com fome, a mulher insistiu em abandonar as crianças na floresta.
E, mais uma vez, João e Maria ouviram a conversa.

And so it was: following the little stones that Hansel had dropped
on the ground, they managed to find the way back home.
The father was happy, but the stepmother wasn’t.
So, some days later, when all of them went hungry again,
the woman insisted on abandoning the children in the forest.
And once again Hansel and Gretel heard the conversation.

 Naquela noite, João tentou sair para pegar pedrinhas,
mas a madrasta tinha trancado a porta e escondido a chave.
Então, o menino teve outra ideia.
No dia seguinte, quando estavam saindo para a floresta,
ele pegou um pedaço de pão e começou a jogar
pequenas migalhas pelo caminho.

That night Hansel tried to go out to pick up small stones,
but the stepmother had locked the door and hidden the key.
Then the boy had another idea.
The following day, when they were leaving for the forest,
he took a piece of bread and started dropping
little crumbs on the way.

 A mesma coisa aconteceu: o pai e a madrasta disseram
que precisavam pegar lenha e deixaram as crianças sozinhas na
floresta. Com frio, João e Maria acenderam uma fogueira e
dormiram perto dela a noite toda. Mas na manhã seguinte... João
descobriu que os passarinhos tinham comido todas as migalhas de
pão! Sem desanimar, eles começaram a andar,
procurando o caminho de volta.

The same thing happened: the father and the stepmother said
they had to pick up some wood and left the children alone in the
forest. Feeling cold, Hansel and Gretel lit a fire and
slept next to it all night. But the following morning... Hansel
found out that little birds had eaten all the bread crumbs!
Without discouraging, they started to walk,
looking for the way back.

 Os dois estavam perdidos há dois dias quando encontraram uma
casinha encantada. O telhado era feito de chocolate;
as paredes, de bolo; as janelas, de açúcar, e o jardim
tinha muitas frutas gostosas e torres de sorvete.
Sem pensar duas vezes, com muita fome,
João e Maria começaram a comer tudo o que viam.

They were lost for two days when they found an
enchanted little house. The roof was made of chocolate;
the walls, of cake; the windows, of sugar and the garden
was full of delicious fruit and ice cream towers.
Without thinking about it twice, and feeling very hungry,
Hansel and Gretel started to eat all they saw.

 De repente, a porta se abriu e uma velhinha,
com uma voz linda, os convidou a entrar:
“Venham, crianças, tem mais dentro de casa!”.
João e Maria entraram e comeram tanto que logo ficaram
com sono. A velhinha, então, levou as duas crianças
até camas macias e confortáveis.

Suddenly, the door opened and an old lady
with a beautiful voice invited them in:
“Come in, kids, there’s more in the house!”
Hansel and Gretel went in and ate so much that they soon
felt sleepy. The old woman then took both children to soft
and comfortable beds.

 João e Maria não faziam ideia de que a velhinha era na verdade
uma bruxa que aprisionava pessoas na sua deliciosa casa
para poder comê-las. Na manhã seguinte, ela acordou João,
o levou até o estábulo e o prendeu numa gaiola.
“Você ficará aqui até que fique mais gordinho!”,
a bruxa gritou.

Hansel and Gretel had no idea that the old lady was in fact
a witch who trapped people in her delicious house
in order to eat them. The following morning, she woke Hansel
up, took him to the stable and locked him in a cage.
“You’ll stay there until you get chubbier!”
the witch shouted.

 Depois a bruxa foi acordar Maria.
“Levante, sua preguiçosa!”, ela disse à menina.
“Vá até a cozinha cozinhar para seu irmão! Ele está magro
demais e eu o quero mais gordinho para poder comê-lo.”
Assustada, Maria fez tudo o que a bruxa mandava.

Then the witch went to wake Gretel up.
“Get up, lazy bones!” she told the girl.
“Go to the kitchen to cook for your brother! He’s too thin
and I want him to be a little fatter so I can eat him.”
Scared, Gretel did everything the witch told her to.

 Todo dia, Maria cozinhava para o irmão, enquanto ela mesma só
comia pão e bebia água. E todo dia a bruxa checava
se o menino tinha engordado, mandando ele mostrar um de seus
dedos. Como ele era esperto e a bruxa, meio cega,
João mostrava um ossinho de galinha que tinha
guardado do almoço.

Each day, Gretel cooked for her brother, while she only ate
bread and drank water. And each day the witch controlled
if the boy got fatter, telling him to show one of his
fingers. As he was smart and the witch a little blind,
Hansel showed her a small chicken bone which he had
taken from his lunch.

 “O menino não está engordando”, pensou a bruxa.
“Acho que vou começar com a irmã dele.”
Então, um dia, ela disse a Maria que elas iriam assar um pão,
e pediu à menina que entrasse no forno para ver se estava
quente o bastante – mas o que ela queria mesmo
era assar a garota!

“The boy isn’t putting on weight,” the witch thought.
“I think I’ll start with his sister.”
So one day she told Gretel that they would bake some bread
and asked her to get into the oven to check if it was
hot enough – but in fact what she wanted
was to roast the girl!

 Maria percebeu qual era a intenção da malvada e respondeu:
“Não sei como entrar no forno. A senhora pode
mostrar para mim?”.
“Que menina boba! Você só precisa fazer assim!”, disse a bruxa,
entrando no forno. Maria, então, fechou a porta, e
imediatamente a velhinha se transformou numa bola de fumaça
que desapareceu no ar.

Gretel realized the wicked woman’s intention and answered:
“I don’t know how to get into the oven. Could you
show me?”
“Silly girl! You only need to do this!” the witch said,
getting into the oven. So Gretel closed the door and
immediately the old lady turned into a smoke ball
that vanished in the air.

 A menina foi logo libertar o irmão. Enquanto a Casa Doce
caía e virava pó, as crianças fugiram e, sem saber como,
conseguiram chegar em casa. O pai chorou de
felicidade quando as abraçou. João e Maria também ficaram muito
felizes, principalmente quando ele contou que a madrasta tinha ido
morar em outro lugar, num país muito, muito distante!

The girl quickly went to free her brother. While the Candy House
was falling down and turning into powder, they ran away and not
knowing how, they managed to get home. The father cried with
happiness when he hugged them. Hansel and Gretel were very
happy too, especially when he told them that the stepmother had
left to live somewhere else, in a very, very far away country!
