Abstract
This work aims to discuss the literary representation concerning to the fraternal pact
and the way it is set as a symbolic portrait of the national alliance. Taking the biblical
myth of Esau and Jacob, twin brothers who quarrel in the familiar context, as the
basic principle, it is intended to analyze how the novel Esaú e Jacó, by Machado de
Assis appropriates this object to comment the national conflicts of Brazilian history, in
the end of the XIX century. The study focuses on the assumption that a society can
only be established through pacts. The analyzed novel also illustrates how the home
happenings are connected to the social context.
