Dom Pedro I nasceu em 1320, sendo
filho de Dom Afonso IV. Assim como a
maioria da sua família, ele morreu jovem,
em 1367. Nos anos finais de sua vida, Pedro
I presenciou a peste negra, doença que
matou no mínimo 75 milhões de pessoas.
Não se sabe ao certo a causa de sua morte,
apenas a data.
Diversas fontes relatam que este teve
uma relação bem conflituosa com o clero,
mas sempre foi amigo da nobreza.
 Contexto Histórico
Como era de costume na época, o poder da igreja
estava acima do poder do Rei. O que o Papa
declarasse devia ser obedecido e respeitado por
todos, e quem não cresse devia ser castigado.
Houve muitos acontecimentos relacionados à
igreja nesse século, e grande parte deles
desencadearam, anos depois, a reforma
protestante. O Rei D. Pedro, entretanto, nunca foi
de acordo com o clero e a igreja, e tampouco se
preocupava em obedece-la.
 Contexto Histórico
Nessa época, havia muitas incertezas com respeito à cristandade,
o que provocava contradições especialmente entre judeus e católicos.
Por exemplo, uma delas foi que o Papa João XXII declarou que
as almas dos mortos ficariam vagando na Terra até o dia do “juízo
final”, onde seriam recompensados ou castigados. Mas seu sucessor,
o Papa Benedito XII (sucedeu ele em 1336) decretou que as almas
dos falecidos iam para o céu, para o inferno ou para o purgatório.
Esse novo ensino foi contradito por muitos e foi motivo de peças
teatrais, sátiras, piadas e outros. Somente depois de anos essa ideia
(que na visão de artistas, filósofos e judeus da época não tinha
fundamente algum) foi amplamente aceita.
 Contexto Histórico
Ainda com respeito a igreja, Portugal era um dos poucos países
que possuíam uma bíblia inteira em sua língua nativa. Por causa
disso, John Wyclife, um teólogo inglês que visitou vários países,
traduziu a Bíblia para o inglês, afim de disponibilizá-la para as
pessoas de seu país nativo. Sobre seu feito, ele deixou registrado que
estava apenas cumprindo a ordem que Cristo havia dado: “Vão e
façam discípulos de pessoas de todas as nações”. Ele também
distribuiu panfletos argumentando que ao invés da igreja buscar
riquezas, ela devia se preocupar mais com os pobres e demonstrar o
amor de Cristo. Mas a igreja não gostou nada disso e o exilaram até o
fim de sua vida. Graças a esse homem, hoje a Bíblia é um livro
disponível em muitas linguagens.

tivessem suas próprias
Bíblias, com a justificativa
que era um livro muito
sagrado e que só a
igreja/clero devia manusear.
Com o tempo, a igreja
disponibilizou Bíblias para as
pessoas, mas todas
incompletas e com
alterações. Por exemplo, esta
se esforçou para remover da
Pedro I e Inês de Castro- “O amor proibido”
D. Pedro se apaixonou pela filha de uma das servas da nobreza,
Inês de Castro, por volta de seus 20 anos. Seu pai e os
conselheiros não aprovaram esse amor, e mandaram tanto a
serva quanto Inês para outro país. Anos depois, D. Pedro manda
uma carta a Inês, dizendo para ela voltar a ele, e eles poderiam
viver escondidos. Ela voltou e eles namoraram escondidos por
alguns meses, mas logo o Rei D. Afonso IV descobriu e, para
remediar essa situação, casou D. Pedro com uma mulher da
linhagem real. Mas D. Pedro só amava Inês. Por conta disso, às
custas de D. Pedro, o rei ordenou que matassem Inês. Ao
descobrir isso, D. Pedro iniciou uma guerra civil contra a
realeza, a nobreza e o clero. Essa guerra continuou até a morte
de D. Afonso. D. Pedro torna-se rei e busca por vingança,
momento em que se inicia o livro.
