One day a woman Rosa Parks was traveling from work on a Montgomery bus, in
Alabama. She was tired after her day's work. She sat down in one of the seats, at the back of the
bus, that were for black people.
White people used the ones in front. But the bus was crowded that night and there weren't
enough seats for everyone. When a white man got on the bus and couldn't find a seat the driver
ordered Mrs. Parks to get up and give him hers.
Mrs. Parks said she didn't know what made her do it. Usually she did as she was told. But
that night she refused to give up her seat. The driver called a policeman. She was arrested and
dragged off to prison.
When Dr. Martin Luther King heard about it he said, " we could all stop using the buses". If
the passengers did it the bus companies would have serious financial losses.
This was what he meant by "nonviolent direct action" it was action that would express the
people's strong feeling without attacking anyone. He got the idea from Gandhi, whose picture
hung over his desk. He had always admired Gandhi.
It was a hard struggle, but at last the black, under the leadership of King, proved their
point, based on the constitution.
In one of his famous speeches, Luther King said: "I say to you today, even though we face
the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream".
His dream was that of a country where men would be truly equal. "I have a dream that my
four little children one day will live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their
skin but by the content of their chapacter ... with this faith we will be able to work together, to
struggle together, to go to prison together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing we will be
free one day".
"You make me feel insignificant. You treat me like a child. You belittle me. You don't like
my friends. You get angry at me when I see them. You do not want me to succeed. You
undermine me. Nothing I say is correct. I cannot even choose a movie or order dinner. You
think the things I'm interested in are ridiculous. Everything is rational and calculated to you.
You're not supportive of my work. You don't want to take me seriously. You want to own me
and control everything, but people aren't like you. You can't run their lives or derive your
security from possessing them. You can't except me to spend my life trying to be what you
think I should be."
And the man says, "But I love you!"

TEXT 04
A POINT OF VIEW
"Now, companion, look at ourselves: our lives are miserable, laborious, and short. We are
born, we receive just enough to keep alive, and we are forced to work to the last atom of our
strength. The life of an animal is misery and slavery - that is the plain truth.
Why are we in this miserable condition? Because human beings steal nearly all products of
our labor. That, companion, is the cause of our problems: men.
Men are the only real enemy we have.
Man is the only creature that consumes without producing.
He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plow by himself. He
cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet, he is the lord of all animals. He puts other animals to
work, and gives back to them the bare minimum to prevent starvation. The rest, he keeps for
himself.
For myself, I do not grumble.
I am twelve years old. I will soon die. But I warn you: whatever goes upon two legs is your
enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has Wings, is a friend ... "

TEXT 05
Nobody sees Seraphina as she flies over a big modern city. The fairy soon realizes
that things are very different now. Lots of cars, lots of noise, people wearing strange clothes.
But Seraphina knows that human nature never changes. She can see some unhappy faces.
Maybe she can help those people.
Through the window of a building Seraphina sees one of those unhappy faces. A
teenage girl is saying something in a very sad voice.
Poor girl! She looks so much like Cinderella! Seraphina's soft heart can't resist, and
she decides to help her. The fairy flies through the open window and talks to the girl.
" Hello. I'm your fairy godmother."
"Sure! And I'm Cinderella ... "
" Trust me I know you have a problem. It's your stepmother.
She doesn't want you to go to the ball, does she?"
The U.S.A is a big and beautiful country. It stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from
Canada on the North to Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico on the South, and also includes
Alaska and Hawaii. The United States includes fifty states.

great men and big cities. Dallas is one of the most civilized of them.

fun, joy and becoming a child again. Miami Beach is the most famous beach in the United
States.
New York is one of the largest and most powerful cities in the Western world and has

Of course.”
Almost everybody drink soda with straws. Some people like to drink with a single
straw, others prefer two straws.
A Physics book has a fun experience with straws that you should try.
If you try to drink from two straws at the same time, one inside the glass and the
other one outside the glass, you will not be able to drink.
Why is that? When drinking with a straw, the liquid is not sucked up. The liquid is
pushed up by the air pressure on the soda surface outside of the straw. This happens because
air has weight. When removing the air from the straw by sucking, the air pressure inside the
straw is reduced relative to the air pressure on the liquid's surface outside the straw. The
greater pressure, or weight, on the outside pushes the liquid up into the straw.
There is a limit to the height that the weight of air will push liquid up a straw. A straw
longer than thirty-three feet at sea level will not work no matter how powerfully the air is
sucked out of it. Similarly, a straw will not work in space since there is no air pressure to push
on the liqUid's surface.
