Abstract: This research presents some important aspects of sophistic to the history
of education, in an attempt to demonstrate its relevance in the construction of the
new concept of pedagogy in the Ancient Greece. Thus, it considers the sophists’
participation in the development process of the Paideia concept, inasmuch as
they initiate a philosophy which is centered in men and their culture. This study
brings a reflection on how they reformulated the philosophical thought of the
time, focusing, for the first time, on intellectuality. They understood the demand
for the political areté and were responsible for spreading the need for a formation
that would integrate the physical and spiritual dimensions. In addition, it indicates
the characteristics of the sophistic movement, the methods and techniques that
were used, and it shows their contributions for a systematic and conscientious
education.
