A juventude
Brixton, 87 Hackford Road.
Seus anos de juventude foram despendidos como negociante
de arte, professor e pregador religioso. Em 1869, aos 16 anos, o
tio Vincent, dono da sucursal da galeria Goupil em Haia, ofere-
ceu-lhe o primeiro emprego, que exerceu durante quatro anos.
Em 1872, iniciou a troca de correspondência com Theo, seu ir-
mão quatro anos mais novo, que perdurou até o final de sua vida.
Em janeiro de 1873, transferido para Bruxelas, conviveu por
alguns meses com Theo, então com 15 anos e já trabalhando na
Goupil. Em maio desse mesmo ano, transferido para Londres,
residiu em Brixton, na 87 Hackford Road, onde se apaixonou
por Eugénie Loyer, a filha da dona da pensão, Sarah Úrsula Loyer.
Era 1873, tinha 20 anos e a rejeição de Eugénie tornou-o dis-
plicente e atormentado cada vez mais por questões existenciais.
Surgiram nessa época traços de excentricidade, introversão, ten-
dência ao isolamento, tendências proselitistas com características
de fanatismo e inadaptação, que se manteriam ao longo de sua
vida (Heerlein, 2000). De outubro a dezembro de 1874, viveu
em Paris, temporariamente transferido pela Goupil. Após breve
retorno a Londres, foi definitivamente transferido para a filial de
Paris em 1875. Em março de 1876, demitido da Goupil, aos 23
anos, frustrado como negociante, decidiu deixar o mundo da arte
e se dedicar à religião dizendo: “A arte é bela, mas a profissão de
meu pai é mais sagrada...”. Regressou à Inglaterra, trabalhando Aos 13 anos.

Agradeço muito sua carta e a nota de cinquenta francos. À medida que o sangue me volta, volta-me também a
ideia de triunfar. Não me espantaria muito se sua doença também fosse uma reação a este horrível inverno, que
durou uma eternidade. E então será a mesma história que aconteceu comigo, respire o máximo possível este ar de
primavera, durma muito cedo, pois você precisará de sono, e quanto à alimentação, muitos legumes frescos, e nada
de vinho ruim ou de álcool ruim. E muito poucas mulheres e muita paciência. Se isso não passar logo, não faz mal.
Agora, lá, Gruby lhe dará uma alimentação forte, à base de carne. Aqui eu não poderia comer muita carne, e aqui
isto não é necessário. Quanto a mim, o torpor justamente está me deixando, eu não sinto mais tanta necessidade
de me distrair, sou menos atormentado pelas paixões e posso trabalhar com mais calma; poderia ficar só sem me
aborrecer. O resultado é que me sinto um pouco mais velho, mas não mais triste. Eu não acreditaria se em sua
próxima carta você me dissesse não ter mais nada, este talvez seja um processo mais sério, e eu não ficaria surpreso
se você ficasse, durante o tempo necessário para se restabelecer, um pouco abatido. Em plena vida artística, por
momento, sempre nos assola a nostalgia da verdadeira vida ideal e irrealizável...”
