Methodological construction of research
in education: challenges

Abstract: This paper analyzes the concepts used to describe research fields
in education. Ambiguities and misconceptions are pointed out, as well as the
complexity stemming from the presence of multiple sub-areas for research that
use different approaches and investigate aspects interfering in the identification
of the scientific area and its investigative style. Methods of investigation are
discussed, particularly those methods applied to educational actions within
schools or communities, of which four conceptions are presented: studies
of everyday life aspects in schools, the use of ethnographic and biographic
approaches, the biographical scope required and the overcoming of the
quantitative-qualitative dichotomy.
