biology to translational medicine. Here, we list a set of important areas of future endeavor that

chronic diseases is inadequate and fragmentary. By the time chronic diseases are diagnosed,
much damage is done and undoing it is difficult. Although understanding the unique features of
any given disease is laudatory and is potentially of therapeutic value, approaches to understand
a common cause, aging, will be uniquely important. If we can understand how aging enables
disease, it may be possible (and even easier) to target this common component of disease.
Targeting aging may allow early intervention and damage avoidance, maintaining vigor and
activity while offsetting the economic burdens of a burgeoning aging population hampered by
multiple chronic diseases:

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE 19th century, a relatively unknown author named Pedro Carolino
rapidly gained intercontinental popularity over a small Portuguese-to-English phrasebook.

English as She Is Spoke (or O novo guia da conversação em portuguez e inglez) was originally
intended to help Portuguese speakers dabble in the English tongue, but was penned by a man
who spoke little to no English himself. And, instead of helping Portuguese speakers learn a
second language, it became a cult classic for fans of inept and unintentional humor.
It quickly gained notoriety among English speakers, including author Mark Twain, who wrote the
introduction for the first English edition, published in 1883. Twain expressed his approval of the
book, saying “Nobody can add to the absurdity of this book, nobody can imitate it successfully,
nobody can hope to produce its fellow; it is perfect.”
It is presumed that Carolino wrote the book through the aid of a Portuguese-to-French dictionary
and a French-to-English dictionary, using the former for an initial translation of a word or phrase
from Portuguese, and the latter to convert it from French into English. The result, of course, is a
mishmash of cloudy gibberish.
Perhaps the most notorious section of the book is an appropriately named chapter entitled
“Idiotisms and Proverbs,” which again features phrases that vary between barely
understandable and completely nonsensical. Examples of Carolino’s twice-translated proverbs
include: “it is better be single as a bad company”; “there is no better sauce who the appetite”;
and simply “That not says a word, consent”.
The book opens with a preface written in a peculiar style of English. It details the book’s
intended audience, stating that it “may be worth the acceptation of the studious persons, and
especially of the Youth, of which we dedicate him particularly.” Perhaps predictably, English as
She Is Spoke did not become popular among Portuguese-speaking students. In fact, it was
never published in Portugal, although it did find an audience 133 years later in Brazil, when it
was released as a comedy title.

Orientalism means several interdependent things. The most readily accepted

designation for Orientalism is an academic one. Anyone who teaches, writes about, or
researches the Orient, either in its specific or its general aspects, is an Orientalist, and what he
or she does is Orientalism.
Related to this academic tradition is a more general meaning for Orientalism as a style

The Orient is not an inert fact of nature. It is not merely there, just as the Occident itself
is not just there either. As both geographical and cultural entities such regions as ‘Orient’ and
‘Occident’ are man-made. Therefore as much as the West itself, the Orient is an idea that has a
history and a tradition of thought, imagery, and vocabulary that have given it reality and
presence in and for the West. The two geographical entities thus support and to an extent
reflect each other. It would be wrong to conclude that the Orient is essentially an idea, or a
creation with no corresponding reality. There are cultures and nations whose location is in the
East, and their lives, histories, and customs have a 5brute reality obviously greater than anything
that could be said about them in the West. But the phenomenon of Orientalism as studied here

better sauce who the appetite”, o pronome“who” refere-se à palavra “sauce” (molho/tempero) e
deveria ser usado para fazer referência à uma pessoa. Além disso, a frase estabelece uma
comparaçção entre os termos e, para tanto, deveria usar a conjunção “than” ao invés do
pronome “who”. Já em “That not says a word”, o pronome “that”, usado como sujeito da frase,

pronome “who”. Finalmente, a escolha lexical, resultante da tradução literal, também contribui

Como o texto informa que o resultado cômico do processo de tradução efetuado por Carolino
