“GOTHAM DPGC”

ABSTRACT
This article attempts to analyze the interference that an external subject, Batman, an
outlaw vigilante, causes in a police department, based on the story written by Greg Rucka
and Ed Brubaker, with drawings by Michael Lark, in the "In the Line of Duty" arc of the
comic "Gotham Central". The magazine features detectives from the Grave Crime Unit in
Gotham who have to deal with Batman's direct and indirect interference in their work.
Thus, this article analyzes this interference according to the laws of the state of New
Jersey, where Gotham City is located, and deconstructs the archetype of "world's greatest
detective" into a mad criminal in a bat fantasy.

10 “What are the crime scenes like, how do the cops feel about Batman? Stuff like that. It’s a way to look at
Gotham from a different perspective, and a way to do character driven police procedurals in comics all at the
same time.” SINGH, Arune. The Beat (Part 1): Ed Brubaker talks 'Gotham Central'. CBR.com. Disponível

11 “Well, I think with any two writers, even if they get along, there is ego involved. I like to write with Greg
because we each bring something different to the table, and we make each other’s ideas better a lot of the
time. But I want to be able to just do my own thing sometimes, too, and I’m sure Greg feels the same way.
So we came up with the idea of each writing a separate shift, and then once a year or so, getting together for
a big case. That way, we still get to work together, but we don’t step on each other’s toes, and no one has to
be the leader of the band.” SINGH, Arune. The Beat (Part 1): Ed Brubaker talks 'Gotham Central'. CBR.com.

12 “[...] there's something people get wrong about Gotham Central all the time when they talk about it. The
book actually sold pretty well. People always look back on it and say that it was on the verge of cancellation,
but there was never talk of canceling the book ever, and it usually sold in the 20,000s. At its absolute lowest,
it was at 18,000 or 19,000, which was better than almost everything Vertigo was publishing at the time, other
than maybe Fables. It was a critical darling much more than a sales blockbuster, for sure, but there was
never anyone at DC going "oh, we're wasting a ton of money on this book." There was never any danger of it
being canceled. It was beloved at DC.” SIMS, Chris. Ed Brubaker looks back on Batman, part two: Gotham

13 "A strong sense of story-telling. An ability to make a scene interesting, subtle, and powerful at the same
time. When you're doing a book like this, with so much talking, you need an artist who can make those
scenes dramatic. He also obsesses on the details, which I love. He made a 3-D map of the squad room just
so he'd know where everything was from all angles." SINGH, Arune. The Beat (Part 1): Ed Brubaker talks

14“For Batman, things are not so clear-cut. The line between good and evil is blurred. Those representing
law and justice are not always the good guys. In Gotham City there are corrupt officials and irresponsible law
enforcement officers. It is no surprise that Batman feels compelled to work outside the confines of the law,
while Superman works only within the bounds of the law. The nature of society in Metropolis is one of
consensus regarding values and norms. Gotham City, on the other hand, represents a state of conflict in
which good and evil spring from the same place and where what is right and wrong is not always agreed
upon.” VOLLUM, Scott; ADKINSON, Cary. The portrayal of crime and justice in the comic book superhero
