ABSTRACT: Among the microirrigation systems the subsurface drip irrigation is the
prdominant used in sugacane cultivation. A major problem associated with this system is the
occurrence of root intrusion through the drippers orifice. The assertion that inadequate
irrigation management can contribute to the intensity of this occurrence is commonly
accepted. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different replacement levels
of the sugarcane evapotranspiration demand (W1 = 45%, W2 = 90%, W3 = 135%, and W4 =
180% of ETo) on the root intrusion process in drippers, with the installation of driplines at
two depths (0,25 m and 0,35 m). Thus, lateral driplines used for four cycles of sugarcane crop
(2008-2011) were evaluated. For each of the four treatments, the individual flow rates of a
sample of 20 drippers were measured in four replications, making up a total of 80 emitters per
treatment, in randomized complete block design. The relationship between the soil moisture
management in the root zone of the sugarcane crop and the occurrence of root intrusion in
drippers orifice is not clearly defined. It was found when the emitters were buried at the depth
of 0.35 m (P1), but this behavior was not repeated in the depth of burial of 0.25 m (P2).
