This work is about a development of a prototype of an ECG and EMG acquisition system
with low manufacturing cost, low power consumption and capable of communicating via
wireless with AndroidTM devices using Bluetooth communication protocol. This prototype
is intended to be used to monitoring the ECG and EMG signals of a person in real time
while performing physical activities. In this equipment, the ECG and EMG amplifiers were
developed to match low power consumption and size, thus the components were chosen to
occupy a small area on the printed circuit board. At the same time, the Bluetooth
transmission of data acquired by the amplifiers was built to match for being processed for
AndroidTM devices (smartphones), creating the opportunity for a new range of products,
which are able to combine the existing technology in modern mobile phones with
biomedical instrumentation technology applied to remote monitoring of biological signals.
In order to achieve this objective, the systems of control and processing, based on RISC
architecture, amplification and filtering, power supply and Bluetooth communication were
developed and integrated in two printed circuit boards with area of 5x3cm. The firmware
of the acquisition system and the visualization, control and signal storage software were
developed in order to turn compatible the system with the majority of devices based on
Android operational system. The system was tested, showing good performance for data
transmission and good stability on storage and control of energy consumption. The system
has been used in research projects and master's theses in order to identify potential
problems or adjustments to be made in hardware and software. With the conclusion of the
system many people can be benefit, once this equipment combines the Android phones
practicality and multifunctionality with the technology of acquisition and processing
biological signals.
