O lugar da Histria Antiga no sculo XXI

1) Justificativa

O presente projeto representa uma tentativa de sintetizar cerca de quinze anos de pesquisa
na elaborao de um livro sobre Histria Antiga que seja, no uma tese especfica, sobre
um tema e um objeto especficos e circunscritos dentro dessa rea de conhecimento, mas
uma reflexo sobre a prpria rea, sobre os modos de sua constituio, suas determinaes
histricas, seus problemas conceituais tais como aparecem, ou antes, se tornam visveis, nos
dias de hoje, bem como sobre as propostas mais recentes para superar essas dificuldades. O
projeto, portanto, possui um carter pessoal que , talvez, inusual, mas a forma mais
honesta de apresent-lo. Ele no se prope, assim, como sintoma de auto-suficincia mas,
pelo contrrio, como exposio da prpria vulnerabilidade do autor e de seu
reconhecimento da ousadia do projeto. Sendo uma tentativa de sntese reflexiva, no
possvel, no espao deste projeto, resumir as discusses bibliogrficas pertinentes,
devendo-se pressupor que uma ampla leitura subjaz s consideraes subsequentes, com
uma nfase admitida em 4 campos: poder e poltica; vida material; identidades sociais e
culturais. As reflexes que se seguem devem-se muito, no apenas experincia docente do
pesquisador proponente, tanto na graduao, como na ps-graduao, mas e sobretudo a
duas experincias de interlocuo no exterior: a primeira em 1998, na Brown University,
EUA, e a segunda em 2003, na Oxford University (GB), ambas propiciadas por bolsas da

FAPESP e a quatro projetos apresentados ao CNPq e aprovados para a obteno de bolsas
de produtividade e pesquisa. A possibilidade concreta de internacionalizao da viso
crtica sobre a Histria Antiga por mim produzida nesses anos conduziu, em 2007,
formao de uma rede nacional, o Laboratrio de Estudos sobre o Imprio Romano
(www.leir.ufop.br), abrangendo uma rede de seis universidades pblicas brasileiras (USP,
UNESP-Franca, UFG, UFES, UFRB e UFOP) em torno de um projeto comum, que cobre
parte deste projeto (Ordem Imperial e Fronteiras Internas) e de um Laboratrio centrado na
Universidade de So Paulo, que desenvolve pesquisas sobre o processo de integrao das
sociedades s margens do Mediterrneo durante a chamada Histria Antiga (grosso modo, e
por periodizao arbitrria, que reflete as pesquisas do grupo paulista, entre VIII a. C. e VI
d.C.).
O projeto visa, assim, criar uma viso crtica, perifrica, concepo tradicional de Histria
Antiga, que atue como alternativa s crticas radicais da Histria e da Arqueologia pscolonialista, tpicas dos pases africanos e asiticos que se libertaram do domnio europeu
em meados do sculo XX, e que se apresente como crtica ultra-ocidental, que procura
superar as historiografias existentes a partir da margem, da moldura do pensamento
ocidental, observando o quadro desenhado pela historiografia a partir da perspectiva do
Extremo Ocidente.
Essa crtica baseia-se na ampliao e aplicao dedutiva (ou seja, na demonstrao factual)
das premissas gerais expressas em quatro artigos j publicados ou aprovados para
publicao (um com auxlio da FAPESP), em cursos ministrados no programa de psgraduao em Histria Social da FFLCH desde 2004 (A Cidade-Estado Antiga e Imprio
Romano: Economia e Sociedade), bem como em inmeras participaes em Congressos no
Brasil, cuja conjuno dever constituir uma tese de livre-docncia ou, antes, um livro,

destinado ao pblico brasileiro (por relacionar-se com a identidade nacional) e europeu (por
produzir uma viso que supostamente (este o pr-suposto do projeto) os europeus no
podem produzir ao tratar da Histria Antiga.
Trs teses sero abordadas no projeto, sendo independentes, porm complementares:
a) Que a Histria (a disciplina cientfica) estrutura sua narrativa por formas, tidas por
naturais, mas que so construdas e que a Histria Anyiga uma dessas formas,
resultando do confronto entre as formas advindas da tradio textual e aquelas
produzidas pela disicplina ao longo do XIX e XX
b) Que o Mediterrneo pode ser assumido, com vantagens, como uma forma
alternativa de uma histria regional de integrao e que essa integrao se d por
um sistema de trocas econmicas e culturais entre pequenas unidades polticas, as
poleis.
c) Que as contradies internas a essas pequenas unidades polticas favorece o
surgimento de unidades maiores, at o Imprio Romano, que propicia um espao
poltico novo e novas formas de integrao.
d) Esse processo de integrao pode ser til para pensarmos o presente
O projeto estrutura-se em trs partes distintas, mas interligadas:
1) A crtica da Histria Antiga enquanto objeto histrico analisando e criticando a
historiografia corrente, que se centra em grandes pesquisadores ou na evoluo
gradual da disciplina, em termos empricos. Nosso objetivo mostrar como e por
que a disciplina se constituiu como tal no sculo XIX: quais as injunes produzidas
pelas filosofias da Histria de Herder, Kant, Hegel e Ranke; quais as alternativas
abertas pelas Histrias Universais e pelas histrias tnico-nacionais, quais os
problemas especficos encontrados pelas histrias da Grcia, de Roma e do Imprio

Romano e quais seus desdobramentos at fins do sculo XX. O Objetivo vai, assim,
muito alm das historiografias tradicionais, centradas em grandes historiadores ( la
A. Momigliano e K. Christ) ou baseadas numa viso evolutiva da disciplina (como
nos textos mais recentes de C. Ampolo ou J.C.Davies). A questo central partir do
problema do eurocentrismo, tal como proposto por M. Bernal e E. Said (entre
outros), para expor as aporias internas prpria disciplina da Histria e Histria
Antiga em particular. A parte terica deste captulo encontra-se redigida e o
objetivo, agora, o de analisar discursivamente a produo sobre Histria
Antiga entre o final do XVIII e o final do XX, grosso modo, de W. Mitford a M.
Finley.

Quais as vias alternativas tentavas pela historiografia: a) o conceito de polis, de

suas origens (Marx, Coulanges, Burckhardt e Weber) ao debate sobre a cidade
antiga em ambiente francs (de Ch. Parain e J.P. Vernant a F. de Polignac), anglosaxo e alemo (de V. Ehremberg a Christian Meier; de Rostovtzeff a M. Finley e o
subsequente debate anglo-talo-francs sobre a cidade antiga; b) Moses Finley, Paul
Veyne e a reinveno da Histria greco-romana; c) Vises contemporneas: H. M.
Hansen e a polis culture; I. Wallerstein e os sistemas mundo na Antiguidade; o
Mediterrneo de Nicolas Purcell e Peregrine Horden; limites das abordagens atuais:
nem unidade cultural indiferenciada, nem fluxo sem plos, mas uma integrao
pelas poleis, mediada por suas contradies. Produo e introduo dos conceitos de
processo de integrao e de fronteira; empiria: integrao econmica e cultural no
Mediterrneo do orientalizante ao sculo I a.C.; processos de integrao poltica: do
fechamento das polis aos imprios. Bibliografia j lida. Falta incorporar dados
arqueolgicos e reforar a argumentao sobre os sculos III e II a.C.

3) O Imprio Romano como Imprio Mediterrnico e de cidades. Dos clssicos
(Gibbon, Mommsen, Haverfield, Rostovtzeff) ao debate contemporneo (F. Millar,
C. Ando. F. Jacques, P. Veyne). Da nfase nas causas da queda busca de
explicao para sua longa durao. De Roma como centro narrativo (histrias de
imperadores e romanizao) redescoberta das periferias e da diversidade no
mundo ps-colonial (de Ste-Croix Bnabou Ch. Leppelier). O debate atual:
identidades centrais e locais (de M. Sartre Greg Woolf). As vantagens e os limites
dos conceitos de identidade e de fronteira. Imprio Romano, e seus novos
significados numa era de multiculturalismo e globalizao e reposicionamento da
Histria da Civilizao Europia. O Imprio Romano como integrador poltico: as
novas fronteiras do poder; processos de integrao ps-poltica: das identidades
tnicas s identidades culturais e religiosas. O Imprio como integrador cultural e
social: da centralidade da Itlia ao policentrismo do IV sculo. Projeto e conceitos
gerais em aberto, em discusso no LEIR e na Universidade parisiense qual
pretendo ir. Falta refletir com mais vagar sobre a passagem de identidades
polticas para identidades religiosas e sobre o conceito cental de fronteiras
internas. No momento, trabalho sobre a questo da relao entre fronteiras
identitrias e fronteiras sociais.
4) Concluso: A Histria Antiga vista do Brasil e o mundo globalizado

2) Objetivos

O objetivo central deste pedido de auxlio a possibilidade de consultar boas

bibliotecas, sobretudo para textos anteriores ao sculo XIX ou extremamente recentes (de

2003 at o presente) e a busca por interlocuo internacional de alto nvel, tanto em termos
institucionais, para apresentar e debater o projeto do LEIR em mbitos diversos, quanto
propriamente vinculados minha pesquisa e ao livro que est em estgio avanado de
redao.

Na

Universidade

de

Paris-Leste,

interessa-me

sobretudo

seu

carter

pluridisciplinar, que me permitir discutir minhas idias em trs seminrios j programados

com o Grupo de Pesquisa sobre Estudos Comparados sobre o Poder, que inclui
antroplogos, socilogos, historiadores da Antiguidade e de perodos mais recentes. O foco
central ser o debate dos conceitos geradores do projeto: ordem e fronteiras sociais. Em
Heidelberg, terei a oportunidade de discutir minha pesquisa com especialistas em Histria
Antiga, o que me permitir reforar o embasamento emprico do texto, bem como de
trabalhar em excelentes bibliotecas, que contm todo o material necessrio pesquisa.

3) Metodologia

A metodologia ser ter dois focos principais: uma metodologia de anlise e

uma metodologia de redao, ambas interligadas. A metodologia de anlise basear-se-, no
caso de textos contemporneos, em princpios descontrutivos, buscando a moldura
conceitual de cada um a partir da anlise, ad absurdum, do enquadramento espacial,
cronolgico e conceitual das narrativas (ou seja, qual o conceito que subjaz a, e que gera os
conceitos principais); a anlise das fontes antigas centrar-se-, por sua vez, na busca de
elementos conceituais alternativos (como, por exemplo, as diferentes conceituaes de polis
em Aristteles), ressaltando o dilogo passado e presente; a metodologia narrativa

estruturar-se- em trs momentos: 1) apresentao do debate: a) clssico; b) recente; c)
ultra-recente; 2) crtica da historiografia; 3) proposio: a) conceitual, b) emprica.

6 de fevereiro 10 de maro de 2009 estada em Heidelberg, na Universidade de
Heidelberg;

Em ambas Universidades ser feita pesquisa em bibliotecas, redao de texto e discusso

com colegas. Em Paris esto previstas 3 conferncias.

Justificativa dos Centros escolhidos

O convite para ir Universidade de Paris-Leste partiu de um contato inicial, em 2007, com

pesquisadores do Grupo de Pesquisas sobre Histria Comparada do Poder, durante um
Congresso organizado pela Universidade federal do esprito Santo, no qual ministrei a
conferncia de abertura. A iniciativa do convite partiu, assim, da prpria Universidade
francesa, que subsidiar meu alojamento em Paris. Na Universidade de Paris-Leste,
interessa-me sobretudo seu carter pluridisciplinar, que me permitir discutir minhas idias
em trs seminrios j programados com o Grupo de Pesquisa sobre Estudos Comparados
sobre o Poder, que inclui antroplogos, socilogos, historiadores da Antiguidade e de
perodos mais recentes. O foco central ser o debate dos conceitos geradores do projeto:
ordem e fronteiras sociais. O contato com o Instituto de Histria Antiga de Heidelberg foi
intermediado pelo Prof. Dr. Carlos Augusto Ribeiro Machado, do qual sou supervisor em
projeto de ps-doutoramento financiado pela FAPESP. A criao do LEIR no Brasil e sua
proposta de estudar a Ordem Imperial e suas Fronteiras Internas despertou o interesse do
diretor do Instituto, Prof. Dr. Christian Witschel, que trabalha, precisamente, com a
tyransio de uma forma de ordem (a do chamado principado) para outra (o chamado
dominado). Em Heidelberg, terei a oportunidade de discutir minha pesquisa com
especialistas em Histria Antiga, o que me permitir reforar o embasamento emprico do
texto, bem como de trabalhar em excelentes bibliotecas, que contm todo o material
necessrio pesquisa.

que trabalharei, no com um professor, mas com um grupo. Trata-se de uma relao
inovadora, entre uma rede brasileira e outra francesa. No caso de Heidelberg, envio o

Proficincia

Como consta de meu currculo Lattes, que instrumento de f pblica, leio, escrevo e falo
francs com fluncia, tendo j escrito um artigo em francs e pesquisado, por duas vezes,
numa instituio francesa no exterior (a cole Franaise de Rome, em 1986 e 1989/1990).
Meu conhecimento de alemo adequado para leitura e escrita e para conversas simples no
mbito da vida cotidiana. Como de conhecimento geral, a lngua acadmica na Alemanha,
para o trato com estrangeiros, o ingls, no qual sou fluente.
