Mosaico cultural
Mexicano S. A., grande conglomerado empresarial do Mxico.
Guignard, Andy Warhol, Picasso, Di Cavalcanti, Portinari.
O acervo do Museu Oscar Niemeyer

Cultural Mosaic
Julho 2009
At a culturally favorable and enriching moment, the Oscar Niemeyer Museum has the opportunity to show great Latin American masters, from the
precious FEMSA Collection of Mexico, and two notable art segments of our time, brought by the Year of France in Brazil. The Lumire Brothers,
prophets of modernity, invented the modern iconography based on autochromes, colored on glass plates dyed with potato starch, and the
cinematograph, which would enable the creation of cinema and television, ancestors of internet and our contemporaneous virtual universe.
The contemporaneous artists gathered in Renault Collection summarize in their works our industrial world of afflictions and restlessness in the
20th century, in a modern adventure. It shows the art of Dubuffet, Mir, Le Parc, Err, one of the greatest artists of European pop art. The
exhibition outlines a scenario of the industrial production, a challenge proposed by this vehicle manufacturer to artists who were invited to produce
these new works.
The style of great Latin American masters is at the Museum showing the richness and diversity of talents in this exhibition from Mexico:
Latitudes: Latin American Masters, from the Collection of FEMSA (Fomento Econmico Mexicano S.A.), a large Mexican business conglomerate.
Gathered for the exhibition - some of them for the first time in Paran and Brazil - works of Frida Khalo, Diego Rivera, Botero, Arcangelo Ianelli, Torres
Garca, Antonio Berni, Siqueiros, Tamayo and other notable modern and contemporaneous artists, who had dreams of eternal beauty, without
forgetting to interpret the reality through social awareness and criticism.
From the collections of the Cultural Foudation of Curitiba, the Museum shows 70 works by Poty Lazzarotto, Guignard, Andy Warhol, Picasso, Di
Cavalcanti, Portinari. Most of them are part of the legacy of Clia and Poty Lazzarotto to the capital of Paran, besides the collections of the 300th
Anniversary of Curitiba (1993) and 500 Years of Brazil Discovery (2000).
American photographer Bernie Dechant shows Brazils modern architecture with sensitivity in Brazil and Beyond.
The collections of the Oscar Niemeyer Museum promotes the Landscapes, an itinerant exhibition across the state of Paran, including the cities
of Paranagu, Morretes, Rio Negro, Ponta Grossa, which is part of the Moving Art project.
Everyone is invited to admire this mosaic of the human soul, expressed through singular cultural diversity, at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, in
autumn-winter 2009.
Welcome to the Museum!

duas salas de exposies do Museu Oscar Niemeyer (MON).

pintura, transborda emoo, explica Le Franc.
as margens do Rio Moselle (1900).
no deu certo. Luis tentou tambm fazer o filme em relevo (tridimen-

Geniuses of Creation
Fine line: The two revolutionary inventions of the Lumire Brothers: the
autochrome (color photograph) and cinematograph (film) keep a dialog, in the
exhibition brought to MON to celebrate the Year of France in Brazil.
By Flora Guedes
The visit of Max Le Franc, Louis Lumires grandson, to Curitiba, for the
assembly of exhibition Autochromes Lumire The Color Time, shows very well
how valuable the exhibition at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (MON) is. This is one
more initiative of the Year of France in Brazil, but its not only that. It reinforces
the cultural links between both countries, and with clear intention of France,
particularly of the Institut Lumire, in Lyon, in Rhne-Alpes, and Culturesfrance,
which are supporting the collection exhibition here, for the first time with this
composition.
The exhibition, with simple arrangement, presents 70 color photos made from
the autochromes of Louis and Auguste Lumire, that keep a relation with the three
large screens showing 17 movies made by the Lumire Brothers from 1895 to 1900
and that are part of the first cinematographic production in the world. French
curator Dominique Paini complemented the exhibition with a painting, films for the
projection of movies created by the Lumire Brothers and one original autochrome
(of a photos size), which received intelligent illumination, i.e., its on only when
the visitor approaches, preventing damages to the light-sensitive material.
The exhibition Autochromes, so important abroad, shows the first moving
images that man has seen and the first color photos. The Lumire Brothers made
historical and intimate records, workers leaving factories, families, the everyday life
of a period, for exhibition to future generations. Otherwise, we would never know
for sure what late 19th century was like, emphasized Cecile Bourgeat, president
do the Institut Lumire, where a museum and a movie theater keep the history of
the Lumire Brothers. Two years ago, an exhibition with the autochromes was
promoted in Moscow, but not with the same dimension as this one, in MON.
The truth is that, as you learn the history of these images, the exhibition gets
more fascinating. Because the impact caused by these two inventions of the
Lumire Brothers, the autochrome and cinematograph, changed the world forever.
The first invention enabled amateurs to take color photos after 1903, when the
autochrome was patented. The color photography process of the Lumire Brothers
used potato starch and glass plates.
In Lyon, we have 600 original autochromes at the museum; the curator
selected these 70 from them, for sure the most famous ones. We brought only
copies. I have some at home too, says Max Le Franc, who has not inherited his
grandfathers geniality for inventions, but certainly learned how to love all legacy
left by his grandfather and great-uncle. The autochromes were divided by theme
for the exhibition: The Lumire Brothers, The Lumire Family, Characters, Sublime
Landscapes and Dead Nature.
If we check in handbooks of photography principles, we will see the rules for
taking a photo. The horizon should occupy one third of the picture, the person
should be on the right side, never in the middle, an empty space is on the left and a
color object near the person. The human eye always focuses on the right side, and
for this reason this area is valued, he taught. They made it instinctively, there
was no handbook at the time, but they took pictures for their good taste. With the
autochromes, they studied depth, light, contour fineness, color intensity. The
picture looks like a painting, overflowing with emotion, explains Le Franc.
With the cinematograph, patented in 1895, the ingenious Lumire Brothers
enabled the film projection and, for this reason, they sent several people across the
world to capture images, just like those made in Japan, Mexico, South Africa and
Russia. In total, 1.4 thousand films of 50 seconds (16 frames per second) were
made in five years. The Autochromes Lumire exhibition shows: Sea Bath (1895),
Baby Meal (1895), Car Arrival (1896), Aquarium with Red Fishes (1897) and
pinal: the margins of Moselle River, among others (1900).

If they hadnt wanted to do it, the humanity would never have seen, for
instance, the Czar crowning in Russia. This film is also here in the exhibition. The
films have immortalized the habits of a period, how people dressed on the streets,
at the beach. From all their inventions, the most revolutionary ones are the
autochrome plates and the cinematograph, he emphasizes, informing that the
loudspeaker, the catalytic heater, the electric guitar, the salad centrifuge and the
bandage for burns, for instance, were created by his grandfather.
For someone who invented the instant photo at 16 years old, we can expect
that. The Lumire Brothers were inventors by nature. I remember when my
grandfather had cataract, at 80 years old, and they said that he would have to
wear a bandage on his eye. But he didnt want it at all, then he created a pair of
glasses to replace the eye bandage, Le Franc told. And when he got sick and
needed to injections applied by a nurse, he soon found a way to be free of that. He
created a pistol that he used to inject the medicine and he never more needed a
nurse. My grandfather didnt stop inventing things, many times to make his life
easier, said he, who was 13 years old when his grandfather died.
Auguste was also extremely intelligent. To be approved in an engineering
contest, he would have to speak English fluently. But there were only three months
for the exam. Then, he learned how to speak the language, using books only, and
studied engineering, said Max Le Franc, explaining that all inventions were signed

by both engineer brothers, but that Auguste was always more interested in
Medicine and Physiology, while Louis was more interested in Physics and Chemistry.
According to Max Le Franc, the inventors tried for a long time to create
the color film, but they were not successful. They painted manually each projection
copy to have color films. They tried with films the same process as that for
autochromes, but it didnt work. Louis also tried to make tridimensional film,
shooting the same scene with a blue objective lens and a red objective lens, but he
was not successful, he complements.

A Coleo FEMSA
acervo.
empresa tambm adquiriu a Window South, do colecionador americano Paul
Cook.

The exhibition richness and diversity are noted in cultural influences and
contributions of artists, such as Frida Khalo, Diogo Rivera, Fernando Botero, Jess
Soto, Iber Camargo, Arcangelo Ianelli, and other great art masters who use
geniality and talent to create their works.
The exhibition is organized according to five thematic cores: the influence of
cubism on Latin American painters, portrait and landscape as evidences of
identity, mural painting: the evolution of Latin America in the universal art, the
incorporation of surrealism into the Latin American art and abstraction and
informalism. Some works reflect the environment of the first vanguards of the
20th century, such as those created by Diego Rivera, Joaqun Torres Garca and
ngel Zrraga. The influence of cubism - movement that represents the nature
forms through geometric structures - is evident in El Grande de Espaa (The Great
of Spain), of Mexican Diego Rivera.
The combination of portrait and landscape in a singular manner is clear in works
of creators who expressed the Latin American reality, as in Retrato de Gabril
Fernndez (Portrait of Gabril Fernndez), of Mexican Roberto Montenegro, and
some works of Venezuelan Armando Revern. Surrealism - the artistic movement that
represents the irrational and the subconscious - is the influence of works like Mi
vestido cuelga aqui (My dress is hung here), of Frida Khalo, and others of Wilfredo
Lam, Roberto Matta, Agustn Lazo and Guillermo Meza.
According to curator Rosa Mara Rodrguez Garza, since 2000, when the
itinerant program started, the FEMSA Collection has participated in 52 exhibitions in
several cities in Mexico and other countries. This selection of 41 works has already
been to Argentina, is now in Brazil and will be in the United States afterwards. Rosa
Mara anticipates that the visitors in Curitiba will be surprised at the richness of the
art from 10 Latin America countries. The spectators in Curitiba will be able to admire
works from a period of great cultural richness of Latin America.
The FEMSA Collection
The collection was created in 1977 from an initiative of the FEMSA Groups
companies and with the support of institutions and people who donated works to
the collection. Then, it came as part of the FEMSA Groups commitments to
promote and disseminate the interest in art among its employees, family members
and communities.

One of the purposes was to form a collection that could show the
evolution, plurality and richness of the Latin American art starting
from the 20th century and promote the Mexican art. They had the
support of art critics and specialists, whose knowledge and criteria
validated the collection course. The start actually happened with the
acquisition of works made by artists influenced by mural painting, and
soon the Latin American art was added to the collection.
Ten years after the collection was created, the FEMSA Group
received the generous donation of the Pan-American Graphic Art (AGPA)
Collection, of over 400 works of graphic experimentation made by great
Latin American masters mostly dedicated to paintings and sculptures. In
1991, the company acquired the Window South collection from
American collector Paul Cook, which included over 200 works of the
best representatives of different Latin American schools, with
highlighted presence of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Nicaragua,
Uruguay and Mexico.
The FEMSA Collection has achieved consolidation and has been
recognized as one of the most important art collections in Mexico. Its
more than one thousand works from several artistic manifestations
narrate the paths of the Latin American art in the 20th century, its
culminating moments among the workings of great masters and the
advent of the 21st century through contemporaneous creators who
utilize surprising languages and singular esthetic proposals.
The FEMSA Group - Fomento Econmico Mexicano S.A. - is among
the five largest business conglomerates in Mexico and the largest
beverage company in Latin America, with operations in nine countries
(Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia,
Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina).
