SRGIO CABRAL
Governador do Estado do Rio de Janeiro
From the earliest of times, Rio de Janeiro, as the seat of the Court and capital of the Republic for
many decades, is the protagonist of the history of our country. Each municipality, museum, archi-
tectural monument, natural park, forest or beach of our state is a legacy of this history, as well as
the wide variety of artistic and cultural expressions of our people.
This guide is intended to provide a brief visit to our heritage, also paying tribute to our profession-
als who, over generations, have been concerned in preserving it. Thanks to them, the elements
that form our identity will be transmitted to future generations, and this is the first condition for
the development and quality of life.
In recent years, more than 15 museums in the state of Rio de Janeiro were opened to the public,
dealing with the most varied collections and themes, spread across all regions. This growth dem-
onstrates the importance of these institutions in contemporary society, such as training centers of
transversal knowledge and identities, focused on the integration of culture, environment, social
development, tourism, education, leisure, science and technology.
The Government of Rio de Janeiro, through the State Culture Secretariat, has contributed effec-
tively to the consolidation of Rios network of museums by creating and encouraging policies di-
rected to the area. This strengthening manifests itself not only through the supporting museums
around the state, but mainly by reviewing and strengthening of the network of museums linked to
the government, through the restoration of buildings and collections and also by the re-conceiving
of its most important institutions, such as the Museum of Image and Sound, which opens its new
headquarters to the world in 2014.
We invite you to dive into our guide and into the richness it has to offer.
SRGIO CABRAL
Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro
Linked to the Superintendence is the State Museums System that since 2009 has been performing
an important job of mapping out and analyzing state museums, as well as gathering information
about the museum institutions presented in this guide, which marks an important step toward
increasing awareness and appreciation of Rios heritage.
Rio de Janeiro is home to major public and private museums, which have become key tourist des-
tinations for those who want to know the culture of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. There we find excep-
tional collections which provide narratives about our nature, artistic events, gastronomy, social
and community training, ethnicities and all that makes us who we are and makes us culturally rich
and distinct.
It is also in Rio de Janeiro that we find community museums, eco-museums and territory mu-
seums, the founders of a new cultural geography of the memory of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
These institutions, which update the traditional museum modus operandi by proposing a col-
laborative construction of discourses and collections, are based on everyday narratives of the
individuals, on regional diversity, on practices and knowledge focused on sustainable and re-
sponsible development.
Finally, we should celebrate the fact that this guide is the result of a partnership between the State
Culture Secretariat, through its Museums Superintendence, and the Federal University of the State
of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), through its Post-Graduate Program in Social Memory, inaugurating a
new way of thinking and working the area of museums in the state in deep connection with the
university and with society.

The creation of the State System of Museums (SIM-RJ) in 2009 is part of the State Museums Policy.
One of its goals is to stimulate the circulation, expansion and production of studies and research,
developing actions aimed at promoting and disseminating museums for education, tourism and
education of the public, among others. As a result of technical visits to 92 municipalities of the
state, about 280 institutions were identified. They make up Rio de Janeiros current museums
scenario.
The museum sector of the state of Rio de Janeiro is undergoing a privileged moment with the open-
ing of new institutions and the revitalizing of the museum network linked to the state government,
guided by institutional strengthening and consolidation of management that provides increasing
quality to the services provided by the state museums to the population.
Based on research conducted by the Post-Graduate Program in Social Memory of the Federal Uni-
versity of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), shared by the Museums of Rio portal, and based
on the action of the State System of Museums (SIM-RJ), this guide was designed not only to be a
reference tool for all those interested in learning more about our museum diversity, but, above
all, to give visibility to the state museums. Here, we profile the institutions that excel in different
regions. We also suggest circuits that integrate memories and emotions.
Finally, this guide is the result of the sum of individuals and staff, of their passionate dedication to
museums and of the willingness to develop a cultural policy based on a philosophy of rhizomatic
working. It also expresses appreciation to the museums and to the initiatives of heritage of the
state of Rio de Janeiro, which carry on seeking to reinvent themselves, to qualify and engage in the
construction of a Rio museum legacy.

do agir, do pensar, do imaginar!

The time is one of celebrations! Celebration of a good encounter, to use the expression of the
philosopher Gilles Deleuze, expressing what we feel when, from creative, dynamic and engaging
partnerships, we experience in our bodies and minds the sensation of the increased power to act,
to think and to imagine! A moment when joy overtakes us and throws us into new adventures like
a projectile flying up high, thrown by a trampoline of emotions.
So we celebrate. And also take advantage to record our sense of gratitude to the institutions and
people who believed from the beginning that this guide would be possible and necessary.
On the one hand, the academic field, the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO),
in particular the Postgraduate program of Social Memory. On the other hand, the State Culture
Secretariat, in particular, the Superintendence of Museums. From both parts the desire to create
and produce a catalog to present to the citizens of our state the vitality and diversity of the muse-
ums in our territory. And that it might make known to those who come to visit us, especially profes-
sionals in the field of Museums, this wealth of places of collective memories that the Fluminense
and Carioca museums represent.
We are well known to the teachers, researchers and students who have been working with us on
the Rio Museums project, a true research lab, catalyzing the teaching, research and extension, and
articulating the post-graduation represented by the Postgraduate Program in Social Memory of
UNIRIO with the Graduation, especially the UNIRIO School of Museology, from which the scientific
initiation scholarships are recruited for the project.
Since 2007, when we created the project, dozens of undergraduate, masters and doctoral students
have benefited from the opportunity to research, learn and reflect about museums and memory
pathways in the context of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The support of some agencies has proved
decisive for the consolidation of the work, with particular emphasis on FAPERJ, which, through the
public announcement Think-Rio, enabled the creation of the Memory and Image Laboratory (LA-
BIM). CNPq, through the granting of the scholarship of research productivity, has given encourage-
ment so that this entire database on the state museums of Rio de Janeiro can unfold into scholarly
articles for journals and books on social memory in its various manifestations.
Many have been the discoveries in so many years of research about the state of Rio de Janeiro and
its memories. All this is recorded in the Rio Museums Portal (www.museusdorio.com.br), source of
publication and an important channel for the future of museums in our state, which we invite every-
one to know and contribute. Our intent is to foster discussion forums and more encounters between
professionals and those interested in the field. Encounters that are good in the sense of memo-
ries and affections, which make voices echo that made and make the history of our state and which
strengthen the social role of the museums as tools for social inclusion and the building of citizenship.
Through it all, celebrate! And the joy that overtakes us and tosses the springboard of memories
and affections be able to generate others as good encounters!
For all this, celebrate! And may the joy that overtakes us and tosses us from the springboard of
memories and affections be able to generate other so good encounters!
