ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) of Morbid Obesity (MO)
participants in the PREPARA Extension Program - Teaching, Research and Extension in Pre
and Post-Operative Physiotherapy of Large-Scale Surgeries, before and after a structured
physiotherapy program for surgical pre-habilitation.
METHODS: This was a prospective, unicentric, uncontrolled clinical trial, performed with 46
subjects with MO. A structured interview was used to collect clinical data and a WHOQOL-
BREF-OBESITY questionnaire, before and after the pre-habilitation program, to evaluate
HRQoL. The analysis was performed through descriptive statistics and comparison test (t
test and Wilcoxon).
RESULTS: There was an increase in the scores of all the domains evaluated by the
questionnaire. However, the domains that showed a statistically significant difference were
the physical domains (p = 0.05), environment (p = 0.04) and total WHOQOL (p= 0.04).
CONCLUSIONS: A structured physiotherapy program of prehabilitation for patients who will
undergo Bariatric Surgery (BS) is able to significantly improve the participants' HRQL,
especially the physical domain.
KEYWORDS: Quality of life. Obesity. Bariatric surgery.
