Cheese-making women: Help or essential work in the social reproduction of the family
When conducting research with women in the rural drylands of Sergipe in 2015/2016, we noticed
that the activities performed by women are fundamental for family reproduction and contribute to
environmental sustainability. They combine different modes of work, between domestic and
agricultural tasks, between the house, the yard and the plot, they carry out other activities, such as
the processing of rennet cheese for family consumption. With the migratory movement, the demand
of this product by the urban population that was accustomed to consume this food grew. The
expressive market demand drives women to produce cheese as a family reproduction strategy and
the income made contributes decisively to provide the family with products for animal feed and for
men and women. This feminine territoriality is built daily by the symbolic and effective appropriation
of space, with the use of resources available in the territory - the milk and the know-how transmitted
by generations of women - , use of waste to feed animals, poultry and pigs, which shows concern for
sustainability and generates other sources of income besides cheese.
