MAN AGAINST NATURE

We live on this planet by courtesy of Nature. Plants and trees protect soils from erosion, help
to maintain the climate of the planet and to control the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Plants and trees give man much of the food, medicines, and materials that we use every day. We need
plants and trees for life on Earth.
But every minute, about 200 square kilometers of tropical rain forests disappear forever. Man
destroys a tropical rain forest three times the size of Switzerland every year. In the Amazon Forest,
dishonest, ignorant people cut down millions of trees and burn enormous areas for large-scale
agriculture. But the soils of the Amazon River Basin are not rich in nutrients, so they are not good
for intensive agriculture. Most of the nutrients are in the tree biomass, and not in the soil. So, when
that forest goes, the nutrients in the system go too, and the soil becomes very, very poor. After the
forest goes only a desert remains.
The destruction of our forests in an urgent problem. Do we have an ecological conscience in
Brazil? Does the Amazon Forest have a future?

b) Em sua opinião, como o progresso poderia prejudicar o meio-ambiente?

LIFE AND DEATH OF A FOREST

Man is only a part of the natural world, and not its owner. But the seven billion people living
on this beautiful planet are destroying its forests, making animals extinct, making new deserts,
polluting the seas. They are killing life on Earth.
A tropical rainforest is a wonderful ecosystem, with an enormous number of plant and animal
life. In Amazonia, the Amazon rainforest, there are 1,600 species of birds. In all, there are about one
million species of plant and animal life in the forest.
But “progress” is destroying the forest. Man cuts down trees, causing the death of 100 plant
and animal species every day in the Amazon. We have to stop this destruction. Save the Amazon,
save the planet. It’s the only one we have.
