Desobediência, interferência, intensidade. Abrindo es-
paço para as manifestações sônicas de uma subcultura
no mais das vezes incompreendida, a Cogumelo veio
expor ao Brasil um punhado de bandas cujos nomes já
escancaravam uma contundente estranheza: Sepultura,
Holocausto, Sarcófago, Overdose, Mutilator, Mayhem,
Chakal, The Mist, Cirrhosis, Witchhammer. Mais: ao
acolher em sua porta uma horda de cabeludos ainda
imberbes que se expandia pelos arredores da loja em
um gregarismo marcado por um atrevimento tranquilo
e sem revide, a Cogumelo proveu ao coletivo HM da
provinciana capital mineira não apenas garantia e segu-
rança, mas legitimidade de expressão.
Disobedience, interference, and intensity. Giving

room to sonic manifestations of a quite often mi-
sunderstood subculture, Cogumelo exposed to Brazil
a handful of bands whose names already laid bare
a cunning strangeness: Sepultura, Holocausto, Sar-
cófago, Overdose, Mutilator, Mayhem, Chakal, The
Mist, Cirrhosis, Witchhammer. And more: in welco-
ming at its doorstep a horde of long-haired young
people, which spread around the store in a grega-
riousness marked by a calm, non-reactive sass, Co-
gumelo provided to the Heavy Metal collective of the
provincial capital of Minas Gerais not only safety,
but the legitimacy of expression.

Enquanto emblemas de choque, cada signo que veio a ser osten-
tado pelo Heavy Metal das montanhas valia pelo rastro de terror,
pelo fascínio de vaticinar o fim do mundo; os breus de uma distopia
negra alvoraçada por novas pragas urbanas, hiper-violência estati-
zada e fantasmagóricos simulacros da realidade. Com o Sepultura
alardeando suas devastações bestiais no rumo da dominação mun-
dial e o críptico Sarcófago, orgulhosamente ostentando sua corpse
paint devidamente entrincheirado no front da cena black metal, o
virulento cast da Cogumelo se atreveu a tratar de questões nunca
abordadas – ou sequer tangenciadas – em qualquer vertente da
música popular brasileira: misantropia, conjecturas metafísicas,
fenômenos sobrenaturais, paganismo, ocultismo, sexo explícito,
doenças mentais, escatologia, suicídio, morte.
As emblems of shock, each sign that came to be boasted by

the Heavy Metal from the mountains took its value by the trail
of terror, by the fascination of foreshadowing the end of the
world; the darkness of a black dystopia fussed by new urban
plagues, nationalized hyper-violence and phantasmagoric sce-
narios of reality. With Sepultura glorifying its bestial devasta-
tions en route to world domination and the cryptic Sarcófago,
proudly boasting its corpsepaint properly entrenched in the
Black Metal front, Cogumelo’s virulent cast dared to approach
subjects never touched or even hinted at by any branch of Bra-
zilian popular music: misanthropy, metaphysical conjectures,
supernatural phenomena, paganism, occultism, explicit sex,
mental illnesses, eschatology, suicide, death.

Para detratores, uma anti-música, mas visões pejorativas jamais im-
pediram seus artífices de arregimentar providenciais contra-ataques,
de quebrar as regras do jogo, se nutrindo da escuridão para burlar
as tão temidas – e, no mais das vezes, equivocadas – exposições
providas pela mídia mainstream. Nesta linha de fuga, em plena crise
do petróleo e sem estúdios, produtores ou técnicos de som afinados
com tal estilo em Belo Horizonte, até mesmo a precariedade de áudio
que veio tipificar os primeiros registros do selo acabou retornando a
seu favor. Não raro, até hoje matérias em publicações ou sites es-
pecializados daqui ou do exterior se valem de adjetivos como “cru”,
“selvagem”, “extremo”, “barbaramente feroz” e “brutal” na tenta-
tiva positiva de abarcar aquilo que poderia validar uma estética da
precariedade. Em seu aparente abatimento, o Heavy Metal vertido
pela Cogumelo se transmutava em força e ímpeto.
For the detractors, it was an anti-music. But those negative

points of view could never stop its craftsmen from gathering pro-
vidential counter-attacks, breaking the rules of the game, nurtu-
ring themselves in darkness to crush the often-feared and, most
of the times mistaken, mainstream media exposés. Through this
escape route, deep in the full-on crude oil crisis of the early
80s, without studios, producers, or sound engineers aligned with
such a style in Belo Horizonte, even the precariousness of the
audio that came to typify the first albums ended up turning in
the label’s favor. To this day, it is not uncommon for specialized
websites worldwide to make use of adjectives such as “raw,”
“savage,” “extreme,” “barbarically ferocious,” and “brutal” with
the means of positively embracing what could validate an aes-
thetic of precariousness. In its apparent exhaustion, the Heavy
Metal vectored by Cogumelo mutated into power and impulse.

território sônico. Assim, da virada dos ’80 para os ’90, ao metal sui
generis do selo vieram se agregar formações vindas do Espírito Santo,
Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Paraná. Um silên-

thrashcore, techno-death, doom e dark metal. No auge destas ousadias,
Pat e João Eduardo ainda se deram ao luxo (ou talvez fosse melhor dizer
lixo?) de investir em bandas/projetos potencialmente com pouco ou ne-
nhum retorno comercial (Junkie Jesus Freud Project, Chemako, Gothic
Vox, Nut, Yellowfante); transgressora estratégia que, paradoxalmente,
não os privou do olhar clínico quando gravaram os trabalhos de estreia
de bandas como Pato Fu, e também a desconhecida banda Tianastácia.

ma insidiosa em terras mineiras, a Cogumelo resiste. Pereni-
dade desdobrada em duas lojas de abordagens distintas, novas
adesões ao seu cast (Akerbeltz, Hammurabi, Drowned, Sagrado
Inferno, Agaurez, Brigada do Ódio), produção de shows, mais
um sólido catálogo com mais de 150 títulos em LP, CD e distri-
buição digital a nível nacional e transcontinental. Sem transigir
de seus princípios, sem adesões ao efêmero; ferrenha guardiã
na preservação de algo que, contrariando os céticos, veio vingar
para além de sua sempre assumida obscuridade. Só para nos
lembrar que, às vezes, mesmo do mais sombrio abismo jorra luz.
After more than four decades since its insidious sprouting in

the earth of Minas Gerais, Cogumelo still resists. A timeles-
sness unfolded in two stores of distinct leanings, new addi-
tions to its cast (Akerbeltz, Hammurabi, Drowned, Sagrado
Inferno, Agaurez, Brigada do Ódio), concert productions,
plus a solid catalogue with more than 150 titles on vinyl,
CD, and digital distribution at a transcontinental level. Wi-
thout infringing on its principles, without adhering to the
ephemeral; always a staunch guardian in the preservation of
something that, contrary to the critics, thrived way beyond
its self-assumed obscurity. It all reminds us that, someti-
mes, even from the darkest abyss, light gushes out.

mous Warfare Noise bands, which consisted of Chakal,
Holocausto, Mutilator, and Sarcófago. On the same year of
that now historical release, Sepultura also released their
first full-length Morbid Visions.

vinyl records to CDs. The big labels tried to swiftly bury vinyl.
With that strategy they raked in millions in profits since, from one
moment to the next, everyone wanted to substitute their old vinyl
records for the perceived higher fidelity of CDs. Here in Brazil,
almost all vinyl manufacturers closed their doors. But vinyl still
survived somewhat in Europe and the USA.

nothing more than a dusty store space, with a sign at
the door that read “For Rent.” Through the Steel-grill
doors we could peer through the semi-darkness. Once
we had the store keys in our hands we evaluated the
space which, together with the office space above,
showed itself to be just the right size to harbor our
dream. Our children would run from one side to the
next, playing their role in the evaluation. “Yes” we
said to ourselves. “At this place we have finished our
search!” Little did we know that there, at that mo-
ment, our long story was about to begin.

O nome Cogumelo veio de uma história em qua-

um mago em um cogumelo. Um desenho de pági-

Pegamos o carro e fomos à caça. Primeiro na casa
deles, onde não os encontramos. Ninguém sabia
por onde andavam. Saímos então rodando pelo
bairro e depois de algumas voltas encontramos os
dois irmãos andando tranquilamente pela rua, sem
sinal de braço engessado. Imagine a cara de sur-
presa ao nos ver saltando do carro. Conversamos e
conseguimos convencê-los que era um show impor-
tante e eles tinham que comparecer. À noite, fomos
pessoalmente verificar o embarque.
There was an instance in which Sepultura had a concert

booked in São Paulo. On the day they were scheduled to
travel there, early in the morning, we found that Iggor had

broken his arm and would not be able to play. João and
I thought, “Something’s just not right about this story.”
At the time there were some issues between the Punks
and Skinheads from São Paulo against the Metal crowd.
Some fights had already happened and we deducted that
those boys were actually afraid! We jumped in our car
and went hunting after them. First we went to their hou-
se, where we didn’t find them. No one knew where they
were. We then started driving around the neighborhood
and, after a bit, found the two brothers walking leisurely
around the street, with no sign of any broken arm. Ima-
gine their surprise in seeing us jumping out of the car.
We talked and were able to convince them that it was an
important show and that they had to play. At night, we
went personally to see them off.

gravadora e editora, fazendo apenas a parte de
divulgação que nos competia. Muitas pessoas
compreenderam essa questão de imediato. Ou-
tras até hoje choram as “pitangas”, achando que
não fizemos o suficiente. Tem aquelas bandas
que até hoje guardam certa mágoa por não te-
rem se tornado um segundo Sepultura... Pode?
Afinal, a proposta da gravadora era tão somente
ser o primeiro degrau a partir do qual as bandas
buscariam meios de seguir sua trajetória.

we shed some functions, just keeping the label and pu-
blishing arms, focusing only on promoting our releases.
Many people understood that stance quickly. Others,
still are crying to this day, thinking we didn’t do enough
for them. There are those bands that, to this day, still
hold a grudge against us because they didn’t become
the next Sepultura, can you believe it? At the end of
the day, though, the label’s proposal was to be the first
stepping stone from which bands would search for the
means to follow their trajectory.

Hoje, tantos anos passados, olho para trás e vejo
através da névoa do tempo um longo caminho per-
corrido, nosso sonho realizado, o sonho de muitos
que estiveram conosco. Para finalizar, posso lhes
dizer que tudo valeu a pena. A história não é feita
de “se” e faríamos tudo outra vez se tivéssemos
outra chance de percorrer esse caminho e construir
essa história.
